Conley to Ohio [Ed: LOCKED!]

Submitted by BiSB on

A little birdie saying Gareon Conley has committed to Ohio State. On official visit. Will look to confirm.

Commence reactions.

EDIT" His high school coach has apparently confirmed.

[LOCKED - PGB:  Well, I go out for a long lunch break to take my kid to get his haircut and I come back to this mess.  It took Ace, BiSB, and now me to weed out one f-ing bad apple.  Instead of trying to go through the entire thread and delete any reference to that poison fruit, I'm locking the thread and hiding the comments.  Sorry to all who wanted to comment.  The news is out there and I assume Brian will post it too so you all can comment in that thread.  And, yes, it was fun moderating a thread started by a former mod.]

This entire thread is nowhere near as close as the meltdown over at 11W. We got Kalis the jewel of the Ohio class. Although Conley is a good athlete, he doesnt at all fit the same bill as Kalis. Good work Ohio, enjoy Conley, we will see Kalis make some folks bleed next year.

That our coaches have a very good eye in spotting talent before anyone else.

Conley committing to a hated rival after committing to UM first stings but in the grand scheme of things, it's not a loss. Michigan will get their players and frankly, OSU has more to offer kids right now than Michigan, especially going undefeated.

Hopefully Michigan will be able fill Conley's spot with somene that will end up being a big contributor to the Wolverines.

Urban came in to a pretty loaded squad and benefited from the great recruiting from Tressel and a QB that fit his system perfectly.

Hoke has had to deal with coaching many players not suited for what he wants to run, plus a degree from M is better, don't you think? Just sayin'

OSU has been sitting pretty long before Hoke and RR. Carr sorta dropped the ball during his tenure and I think a lof of that had to do with the fact Carr didn't enjoy recruiting and wasn't as good at it as Tressel and his guys were. I don't really think many of these kids playing football really care if a degree from U of M is better than OSU because we all know that the state of Ohio takes care of their OSU players long after they graduate. And if anything, I'll make the wild assumption that OSU "helps" their players a lot more in the classroom than Michigan does. And I think many players like that. I know Michigan has in place a very generous support staff to help kids pass their courses but I think OSU does a better job of really supporting them, if ya know what I mean.

on this thread escalated quick, seems like it is going up way faster than the M BBall game the other day.

Obviously Conley was a wanted recruit by our fan base, we need to get over it because it doesn't do us any good to be bitter for long.

former Mod BiSB goes and creates a thread that he knows is going to generate a lot of heated comments that will likely require Mod intervention, comments that he is no longer responsible for deleting.  Has BiSB gone evil due to new baby sleep deprivation?

Although I did get to see it on my phone, I didn't get the pleasure of doing what Ace did.

Basically, Mr. Mario is happy Conley chose the institution that fit his academic, personal and athletic needs. Oh, and he has nothing but respect for a certain poster with his own recruiting/football analysis/hot girls blog and professed his admiration.

Conley looked like he could've really helped us on either side of the ball. I was looking forward to seeing him in ye ole Maize and Blue.

Good luck to the young man. Hopefully we can give him 4 seasons of regret for making this choice.

This is really not that big of a deal to me. I'm not saying landing quality recruits is not important, however. I just want kids on the team who's hearts are completely devoted to Michigan. Guys like Morris and Tuley-Tillman. Those kids take the rivalry seriously. Conley is now on the same level as Pryor and Boren to me. Shock jocks who get off to yanking people's chains.. It warms my heart when we steal a recruit out of the 'worst state ever', but maybe its time to establish new pipelines.. Here's to Blake Countess' speedy recovery and continued secondary growth!

To put things a bit back on track...... I don't know how anyone who's followed Conley's recruitment can say they are truly suprised by this move or really angered by it.  I respect the kid for being above board with his intentions unlike others we've had to deal with but its been known that he has had a strong desire to look around since back in the summer.  He was committed to us for quite some time but unfortunately got bedazzled by some of the glitz being tossed his way.  It also confirms the thesis that Conley really only committed to us because we were his first/only big time offer.  Alot of kids would appreciate the fact that a staff was high on him and believed in him before it was reflected in his recruiting rankings but obviously Conley isnt one of those kids.  Oh well.

This was identified as one of the dangers in being a staff that emphasizes hard early recruiting and getting pre-season commits... it gives other programs the ability to swoop in and be the new sexy choice without having to do alot of the leg work.  I still prefer this staffs approach don't get me wrong, but this is one of the trappings of it.

Had Conley even been back to Michigan since the camp/commitment?  It also sounded like there was a big split between where his parents wanted him to go with his Mom out west wanting Oregon and I believe OSU if not west coast and his Dad supposedly wanting Michigan.

Best of luck to him, but anytime someone claims to be a life long fan and continues to cancel visit opportunities, it will most likely not end well.

Meh, we don't need him. These things are going to happen. They flip Conley, we flip Kalis, yada yada yada.

I know they're just kids and they're being faced with a tough decision on schools and where to go, but I really wish they wouldn't make a commitment until they knew they were 100%.

I don't really see how this is a flip, Conley opened up his recruitment a couple of weeks ago, he just happend to commit to the first school he visited.  Obviously 11 Warriors are trying to make it sound like Urban ripped Hoke's heart out with this pledge, but the fact of the matter is that Ohio St got a pledge from an uncommitted recruit.

for flipping kids (not criticizing at all) but I expected him to focus on 5* targets. Perhaps the perception of Hoke winning Ohio recruits created a need to win one back more than get a national star.
