Conley decommits

Submitted by lilwolve4 on

Gareon Conley has decomitted as being reported by various people on the twittersphere. Mattison was at his school today. Commence death and dispair.

Wow RT @Miles11W BREAKING: Gareon Conley confirms to me he has de-committed from #Michigan. Will take an official to#OhioState.

Also hearing that he will take an OV to OSU, Cincinatti, and here. All is not completely lost.

Hey coach, thanks for going through all the trouble of stopping by.  Yeah....I don't like you anymore.  You can go back home now.

Kind of a massive dick move by Conley if you ask me.  Call Mich up before they go through the trouble of visiting you.  Would be like your long distance girlfriend telling you she's excited to see you the day before you travel to out to visit, and then when you get there she's all "yeah...I have a new boyfriend now. LOL"

They had a discussion. One thing that I notice about Mattison is his sincerity. If he is sitting with a kid who is unsure, maybe he just had a real heart to heart with the kid, and the conclusion was for him to decomitt so he can do what he has to do to be a peace with his decision.

Or, maybe not.

Usually I would say best of luck to him, but he played us so yeah best of luck to the guys who actually want to be blue. Kid sounds like a headcase. Didn't he just say a day or two ago that he was 100 percent committed to Michigan?

But we're basing this off of what information exactly? Some tweets and texts he supposedly had with some insiders? He could have been just responding to get them and the fanbase off his back. Hell, Mattison could have told him in person Michigan considers him decommitted? Let's not go full rage and say something that makes the fanbase look bad to him or other recruits.

They are trying to keep options open, and to please everyone. I suspect that many of the conflicting reports are due to nothing more than them being pressured for a response. They are just trying to make people go away.

The benefit to the fan base of talking to 17 year olds is that they will talk, where someone my age would just tell them to leave me the hell alone and don't step on the damned grass on your way out.

Conley, per a convo with TomVH ($,WN):

"Felt like I did it too early and didn't wait to see what else would come. I like Michigan but I like other schools too and I wanna visit them."

I'm guessing Mattison probably explained policy in clear terms during the visit and that led to the decommit.

We'll see if the staff still recruits him, hopefully they do, but I get the feeling this one's trending away from the good guys.

Best of luck to the kid as long as he chooses Oregon and not Urban.

And hunch is that after face-to-face discussion, Mattison encouraged him to decommit and take his visits while making it explicitly clear that there was no guarantee of a spot in this class for him.

If he's still coming for an official visit to Michigan (as mentioned in the OP), all he's doing is officially decommiting (after discussing with the coaches and understanding the ramifications) and doing his due dilligence regarding other schools who are interested.

He could look around and then decide that Michigan is still the best school for him, and if there is room, recommit. This is different than other recruits, as there were a few discussions with the coaches and a meeting, this wasn't a commit scheduling an official without talking to the coaches and seeing where that puts his spot.

I considered this as well because of the timing. Better he is unsure now than January. It was all done on the up and up so Michigan continues recruitment. Here's hoping not too many Michigan "fans" are dicks to the kid and after all is said and done he comes back to the good side.

It sucks and I wish him well but this opens another spot for the class.  Hopefully we can pick up another offensive lineman such as Kenny Lacy or Cameron Hunt.  We desperately need depth on the o- line.
