I read Bo's Lasting Lessons and remember him saying find loyal guys who won't leave and something along the lines of no co coordinators so everyone is of one mid. How prophetic, again let's just follow what Bo laid out and use that as a guide: the man helped build nearly 4 decades of football dominance.

"... 4 decades of football dominance ..."

Right -- unless you take a close look and see that Bo dominated a lousy conference (1-9 in the Rose Bowl in the '70s, not much better in the '80s) and was somewhat exposed (in bowls) when going outside the Upper Midwest.

Lloyd's staff after the turn of the century should tell you everything you need to know about the risks of stasis and "loyalty."

Bo couldn't help the state of the confernece, and what we saw turn of the century was blind loyalty. Carr didn't adapt to the times while Bo did, Bo hired and promoted guys he knew would be loyal nd do a good job, not blindly promote the next man up, and Bo was supportive of whoever was coaching Michigan, Carr proved he wasn't.

The point of my post was maybe Harbs should take a page from Bo and hire a guy he thinks will be willing to stick around, tired of all this coaching turnover. I know it means it's typically a good thing to see coaches come and go in our case, but so is stability. Just my 2 cents.

pivoting from “NFL coaches” to “college guys”. Recruiting has to be a key reason, plus guys who will hopefully stay a little longer than the current 2-year rotation trend.

We're 100% missing Wheatley. He was one of the best recruiters in the country.

I think we'll still recruit decently well, because of the Michigan brand/facilities, but the hype has certainly worn off, and from here on out it will be more about results on the field.

I do agree, I honestly don’t think he brings a ton of value in legit coaching/previous experience. Besides being head coach son. And being young and cool for recruiting. I wouldn’t mind seeing him go somewhere. He has been moved around filling in gaps, so obviously he doesn’t have a specialty.

If he provides value as a analyst, why not put him in a analyst spot. And put a coach that has more experience coaching a certain position. That’s all my point is. Jay is well liked by players and is hard worker. I am not attempting to slight him. Just feel offense needs the best and don’t think he fills those boots. Would prefer a running back coach that actually has coached position more than a year. A proven coach.

I've asked this a time or two, but anyone know when we find out if SP is eligible to play this year? That is huge news. Oh that and Pep gone. Everything else will work itself out.

Hopefully Hamilton goes to Oakland with Gruden.  Would like to see Drevno make a move similar to what Mattison did, step back and focus on the OL.  He had a tremendous track record before coming to AA.  Bring in a WR coach, maybe a version of Moore or a vet coach with a track record.  Enos then focuses on QB and is defacto OC with Harbaugh providing much input.  If possible, would like to see Junior shifted into another role and possibly Mike Hart come in to be RB coach.

For now:

OC-R: Drevno ... with [hopeful?] rumors circling about a demotion in title (but not in pay) to OL coach

OC-P: Pep ... with [realistic?] rumors circling about a departure

WR: Enos

TE: Moore

RB: Jay

OL: not full-time

DC: Brown

DL: Mattison

LB: Al Washington

CB: Zordich

S: Partridge ... almost by default, should he stay, which is [hopeful?/realistic?]

STs: not full-time

If Pep leaves, what's the move? Enos almost assuredly becomes *a* coordinator. Does he become *the* sole coordinator, pushing Drevno to OL? If not, is Pep's replacement an OL specialist? Or do we roll with 4 on offense + Bush Sr., committing him to a pure STs position? And if Enos does move up, what of the WRs? It would appear that group would again be without a committed full-time assistant.

Given the likelihood of Pep leaving and the fact that Partridge is yet to be confirmed as staying, this seems 1-2 weeks from being finalized. Many moving parts remain.

Meanwhile: Bush Sr. seems likely to not make it in this round unless Partridge jets, which fortunately does not yet seem to be happening. If Partridge stays at M and Bush remains an analyst, what's his move? He seems too qualified to stay. Are we lucky enough to benefit from sheer patience/loyalty on that one?

I'd expect him to add some ST duties. Brown coaches the other LBs. Practically nobody has OCs and DCs that aren't also position coaches. I'm sure we won't either.

That being said, I've never liked the idea of having one OL coach who's also the OC. He's already coaching a sizable portion of the roster and it's a group that needs a lot of technique work. It's asking a lot of him to do both.

I didn't acknowledge that explicitly but understood it. It's what went into my "not full-time" detail. When all is said and done there will be some split duty positions. ST is likely to be one. WR, QB and/or OL is likely to be another.

I'm far from a professional coach but I am hoping that the splits include STs (Washington), WR (Enos), and QB (Harbaugh) rather than any combination including OL. I think it's very important that our OL coach be singly focused for the next two or so years.

If, for example, Drevno can find the humility to accept that demotion, I'd be thrilled to later watch him get the OC gig back if it happens in 3ish years after building an OL commensurate with his history and paycheck.

People often describe the OL failures as caused by a spread-too-thin Drevno. If true, then it's reasonable to both (1) ask why a keen-eyed Harbaugh might make (and continue) the mistake of spreading him thin and (2) hypothesize reasonable answers. In my opinion, one such reasonable answer is that he *rightfully* felt Drevno -- based on his track record -- could not only handle his role but excel in the OC/OL position if the OL were in maintenance mode ... but made the mistake of assuming he could therefore handle/excel in the OL/OC position if the OL were in rebuilding mode.

I can't click "save" without acknowledging all the implied "ifs" in that paragraph, but it seems like a measured outlook and if true leaves me room to (potentially) be excited for future Drevno despite severe disappointment in his recent past / present.

FTR, in this case, I'm defining "split duty positions" not as position groups with more than one coach (as may occur at LB and ST) but as a coach with more than one position group.

I now notice how ambiguous that is, but it stems from my believing that the latter distinction is much more worthy of conversation right now. After all, this is an environment in which certain position groups have failed under the guise of their coach (e.g., Drevno) being spread too thin.

I like the thought and effort you put in here, and it makes sense.  But the only 'rumors' about Drevno being demoted come from people on this board that have no more insight than I have.  It's hope...

I agree with the hope - I'd like to see Drevno concentrate on the OL and give us the one he built for Stanford, USC, and SF.

That was just a list of where he plans on taking official visits, I'm pretty sure he's got it narrowed down to us or UGA. He's taking all his visits though, as any reasonable person would. They pay for it, you get the red carpet rolled out for you, etc. He's likely only visiting CMU to get a free trip to visit his brother.

I am 100% fine with Dan Enos being our offensive coordinator. Arkansas’s offense had ranked higher than has Drevno and Hamilton’s offense. Even last year with the Hog’s 4-8 record, there offense ranked higher than our record at 8-5. With the new S&C hire and the Moore hire (both having either been hired by Enos or worked with him extensively), all signs point to Enos leading the offense with either Pep or Drevno (or both) leaving for other jobs.
