Chris Webber accepts invitation to be honorary Michigan Football captain

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Just happened now on WTKA.

Harbaugh came on radio and offered CWebb the invitation and he immediately accepted. Webber's first appearance at a Michigan game in Ann Arbor since 1994.

I thought I was done worrying about this lol, but now I guess this forces me to give an opinion.

Anyway...

I am extremely happy and excited that Chris Webber and the University are FINALLY building toward a more positive relationship now. It's something I never thought Chris or the university would be able to do. Time heals, and it was wrong for the university to simply disconnect with him so abruptly.

Although I completely support his welcoming back to the university, I don't think football honorary captain is the right way to do it at all. I don't think we should proclaim him as an honorable leader when he violated NCAA rules and committed perjury, and most importantly has shown absolutely no remorse.

I think honorary captain honors for him should be waited on until that remorse is given. Since he's finished the most difficult step in coming back to Ann Arbor, it shouldn't be that hard. By giving an apology for making a mistake, he doesn't have to let go of his perspective on the exploitation of college kids and how it seemed to be the right thing at the time as a poor Detroit kid. And he would easily forgiven because that is a reasonable perspective!

Until that happens, I would just like to see him stick to a Fab Five reunion at Crisler. That seems far more appropriate. He can come to sporting events (including football games) and be a valuable alumn, but honorary captain just doesn't seem right at the moment. Banners should stay down too as remembrance of the fact that integrity is top priority at the greatest university in the world. Beilein has taken their places with integrity anyway!

That being said, maybe this is far more pre-meditated and plans have been made to further rebuild the university and C-Webb's connection prior to his appearance at The Big House.

I used to think this way but we need to celebrate and cherish that era and those teams. The NCAA is full of shit now so I really don't value their words about games being vacated. You can't vacate the memories and footage and newspaper archives.

I'm not necessarily saying hang the banners but these cold relations between U-M and Webber need to thaw. It isn't doing anyone any good to not at least be speaking anymore.

I totally agree that we need to celebrate and cherish that era and those teams, it's just that honorary captain does not seem like the right way to do that IMO.

At least not until we see remorse from Chris Webber for putting his brothers in a bad spot (which as I said, shouldn't be hard to do at this point)...

On one hand, I like that he's coming back.  And I'll thank Harbaugh for building the bridge to make it happen.

On the other hand, I really do want him to accept some responsibility.  Even if its saying 'Hey, I'm not sorry.  I was being used far more than I was gaining, and I wanted some cash.  So I took it.'  I'd accept that.  For me, he doesn't have to be sorry.  Just some acknowledgment that he was, indeed, at some fault.

I will never hold that TO against him...  Never.

That will be awesome.. I hope Jalen will also get a chance to serve as honorary captain, would be great if the fab five attend the game together.

The last few years during the NBA finals, every time the two crews would be on after the games.. it felt weird to see Rose and Webber not 30 ft apart but never saying anything to each other. Credit to our great coaches Harbaugh and Beilein for welcoming these players back to AA!

I still think Ed Martin secretly worked for Izzo. Also Mateen Cleaves was already a double agent for Izzo and flipped that SUV on purpose.
