Chase Winovich: A Leader profile by Michigan Daily
"Before the season began, the week of the Notre Dame game, Chase Winovich was dealt some unexpected bad news.
After a season in which he led the Michigan football team in sacks, tackles for loss and fumble recoveries, Winovich was one of the unquestioned leaders on the Wolverines’ defense which finished third nationally in total defense.
He saw himself as a leader too.
So, when Michigan announced its captains, voted on by the players, and Winovich wasn’t one of them, he was understandably disappointed.
“That one stung a little bit,” Winovich said that week, on Aug. 28, before giving some context. “But at the end of the day, when you think about it, I came back to win a national championship. I didn’t come back to win a popularity contest, so, you know, it’s on the board. That’s all I’m gonna say. My role as a leader is still the same. I woke up that day, was not the captain. I woke up the next day, was not the captain. End of the day, it’s out of my hands. So I’m moving on.”"
“Chase is a character, and he’s a tremendous leader on this team,” said junior quarterback Shea Patterson. “All he’s gotta do is look at you, and you know what he’s saying. He sparked a fire in me in the locker room and on the field in the third quarter. That helped me out a lot.”

Hes without question the leader of this team. I don’t care that he wasn’t voted as captain. He’s been the most consistent player on this team up to this point and is a true Michigan Man. I hope he has a long, productive career in the NFL.

Does anyone know what the symbol was that he was making with his hands after the sacks on Saturday?

Chase is also tied for the lead nationally in TFLs with 10.5. Five other players have the same total.
And his TFLs haven't just been about the competition--he had three vs. Notre Dame. He had 18.5 in the 2017 season.

I don't know him but he seems like a happy, free-spirited type of guy. Often those types do not get serious consideration for leadership positions because they are not "serious" enough, at least on the outside. Regardless, he is a great player who gives 100% each play and his enthusiasm drives the defense. In that regard he is a total leader and "captain" on the field.

Chase does everything and more you would expect from a captain. Given he didn't have to come back, but did as a 5th year senior to help this team achieve its goals is a little mind boggling in regards to not being selected as a captain. IMO the selection of captains should be a combination of getting feedback from players and the coaches and ultimately chosen by the head coach.

He has become one of my favorite players, and not just due to his productiveness on the field.
