Many new coaches face some initial resistance, though.  There are only so many Jim Harbaughs out there that everyone immediately embraces.  The rest have to deliver results to prove their worth.  Rich didn't do that here and Strong doesn't seem to be at Texas either.

Just as Rich's record at WVU proved to be a mirage, Strong might not be as good as his Louisville record indicated, either.  RichRod, Strong, Butch Jones, Brian Kelly, Randy Edsall - the list of "hot" Big East coaches that haven't panned out at bigger jobs is pretty long.   Which is why I'd be a bit leery of Herman if I were Texas.

Agreed 100%. Was going to write the very same thing.

We struck absolute gold that there was even a Harbaugh out there for our program, let alone one willing to leave the NFL and want to be in AA long term. You have to take risks, and that's what UT will be doing. At least with Herman they get someone who has been in Texas and has probably made some inroads at the powerhouse high schools.

The only place I would expect a college coach to go after winning the amount of National Championships that Saban has is to the NFL. But he's been there done that, and burned out after two seasons. I would figure that the only thing that would get him out of Tuscaloosa is retirement.

Great record in the Big East. Pretty embarrassing tenure after following up a long-tenured coach who won a title but was really more of a B+ than an A. Not sure who they'd hire that would have a resume similar to Hoke. Somebody who has had some mild success, but an overall losing record at two G5 schools.

Yep, this is the better analogy because Mack Brown was very successful over his tenure but definitely slipped at the end in culture and talent, perhaps even more so than 05/07 Lloyd. And Strong was never accepted just like RichRod, though obviously for different reasons.

Herman does have a stronger resume than Hoke, and that's probably because the behind the scenes forces at Texas are more of the insane-impatient-do-anything-to-win-now boo$ter types while the prevailing culture at M is less booster driven and more about the whole Michigan man obsession.

I am surprised he wasn't more successful. I know he really cleaned up the program from Mack Brown, but he should have won more. Texas should be winning at Ohio State levels at all times (same goes with USC).
