Indeed, a handlebar mustache curves up at the edges while a true fu manchu is grown purely from the sides of the lips and hangs down. Fu manchu is often confused with a horseshoe mustache which is essentially half a goatee...

Correct about the goatee. What people commonly mistake as a goatee is a circle beard.
