I don't understand why decorated coordinators from MSU and OSU refuse to leave for head coaching jobs.  Are they getting career counseling from George Costanza?

On the radio here for in KC they were talking about him not getting the KU job. Someone asked why KU would hire TX A & M WR coach when Herman wanted the job. One of the guys is on the KU beat and was very careful with his wording. He just said Herman absolutely wanted the job but was never offered for various reasons. He added that there was a reason he hasn't gotten a HC job. Didn't really elaborate, but I thought it was interesting.

candidates to thoroughly interview them and talk to others who have worked with them.  Especially if they haven't held a similar position that they're being hired for.  Some guys aren't well suited or ready for a head coaching job, who knows?  Michigan can't afford to gamble at this point.  They need a coach who has a high % chance of success NOW.

As noted below, I think they are referring to the Warriner.  I find it hard to imagine Hermann would win recruiting awards and be a prominent name on lists of "next coordinators to get HC gigs" if he was a really difficult guy to work with.

Chad Morris was this preseason's hotshot coordinator. He just accepted the job at SMU, which just went 1-11.

Tom Herman's star is slightly brighter than Morris's, and his best job offer at the moment is Houston. He can do better (P5 school) if he waits.

Football Scoop reported earlier this morning that Kiffin had won the award (according to a source).  Way to keep up that stellar reporting you bunch of hacks!

I'm not trashing Nussmeier because I think he is a good coach with a lot of potential, but Kiffin pretty much confirms that anyone can become a Saban assistant and look stellar. One of us could probably lead Bama to a NC. I really get the feeling Saban controls almost everything down there. This is why I'd be very hesitant to hire an OSU OC or MSU DC. I think Meyer really runs the offense in Columbus and there has been a little bit of evidence here that Dantonio is the key to MSU's defensive success. I really hope we stay away from hiring one of those assistants, or any assistant for that matter.

I'm just saying that anyone can get plugged in there and have success. How many different OCs has Bama had under Saban? It's been a revolving door lately and they don't miss a beat. Saying "Guy X won a NC at bama so he must be great" is pretty misleading to me. Just like a lot of the Belicheck assistants.

There is one reason I wouldn't mind seeing Herman be a "Plan B" or "Plan C" hire.  Does anyone remember how ND used to beat Michigan teams that were better than they were when they had Greg Mattison as their DC?

Hiring an ex-Urban Meyer OC as the HC would give Michigan a huge advantage on defense because he could tell the DC what Meyer was going to do next with a great degree of accuracy.

Keeping that offense running through the loss of Braxton Miller and then not skipping a beat when J.T. Barrett went down is pretty damned impressive.

I hope some school out there woos him so he no longer woes us.

Unless that award is inscribed with something to the effect of "enjoy this award while you can because next year Jim Harbaugh's OC at Michigan is going to grind you into little bitchcakes, then I could not care less what some coach at that POS school won.

Since the Texas schools aren't open, he'd come here in a fucking heart beat.

I like the guy.  If the top choices (Harbaughs, Stoops, Mora) say no, I'd be pretty happy with Herman.

The guy is a coordinator.  This is still a great job.  He'd walk here from Columbus for this fucking job.  Don't fool yourself.

I just don't see it.  Michigan is still a good coaching job, but it doesn't have the personnel for Herman's offense, and the odds would be stacked against him being there long enough to recruit and develop the talent he'd need.  Herman's entire philosophy is based around a no-huddle zone read.   Do you see Morris or Bellomy or Cone being able to run that?

Why do people think OSU offfense is Herman when Urban Meyer has been wildlly succesful on offense at 4 schools with multiple coordinators?  It is the same reason you give serious pause with Narduzzi vs Dantonio.  Dantonio is the stud DC from OSU who went on to be a HC and that's his defense.

I looked at Herman's record at Iowa State with advanced stats - yes I realize it is Iowa State but if you are an offensive guru I'd expect a pickup.  He was there from 2009 to 2011.  I compared it to the 2 prior years before he arrived.  He had 1 blip his 1st year there which without researching could  have been a senior QB but whatever the case by the 2nd and 3rd years ISU was basicaly ISU before Herman.

To put in perspective UM's horrid 2014 offense is 82 (oFEI), 73 (S&P+)

  W/L Tot Off oFEI oS&P+
2007     89 109
2008     74 105
2009     51 42
2010     79 83
2011*     82 101

Well, there's this from Brian's Searchbits post today:

"This site is highly intrigued by Herman, who Urban Meyer yoinked off an uninspiring three-year tenure as Iowa State's OC to his great profit. Since, he's coordinated consecutive top-ten offenses by any metric you care to name. The latter is an incredibly resilient year in which Herman lost four OL, his QB, and his top RB without batting an eye, then lost his second-string QB and still turned Wisconsin into a radioactive, glassy plain.

Herman is a Broyles finalist this year and was the 2013 Rivals Big Ten recruiter of the year—he's the total package.

Narduzzi is a bit less exciting because it's hard to tell exactly how much he is the MSU defense and how much is Dantonio. That's less of a concern for Herman because Dan Mullen went on to succeed at Mississippi State and Florida cratered under Steve Addazio; Meyer is also less insanely involved in the day-to-day after his UF freakout period.

There were also some signs that MSU's defense was beginning to get figured out this year. Oregon and Ohio State took advantage of MSU's aggressive cover-four safeties by blazing guys down the slot until the Spartans didn't know what to think; I'd prefer the guy who put up 49 this year on the MSU defense instead of the guy who ceded same."
