CC: Per the Podcast....who is your Top 7?

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
Hopefully you all checked out Brian's podcast today with Ace and Brian's Top 7 coaching candidates. No surprises as the common Top 2 (1.Jim Harbaugh 2. Mullen). Anyone who reads the blog can tell you some of the other names that showed up but I don't want to discourage people from actually listening to the Podcast. The question I pose is what is everyone's REALISTIC Top 7 (Keep the Sabans,Belicheks et. Al to yourself) . I agree with the Top 2 (top choice would be either Harbaugh, two would be Mullen). Not sure of the order at this point but next would be one of Shaw from Stanford, Gundy at OkieSt and Les Miles. Then If we had to go coordinator I'd say Tom Herman from Ohio or Teryl Austin from the Lions.

He followed Kelly at CMU and Cinncy. Didn't really spend enough time at either place to establish his own program. If you're a good coach that concern probably doesn't carry as much weight in the evaluation process. It appears he's starting to build something at Tennessee but the jury's still out in my opinion. Unfortunately, we don't have time on our side to see how things develop for him there. He's definitely not a can't miss, slam dunk hire, but won't be a horrible hire. Belongs on a short list for sure.

As the above 2 commenters mentioned - switch 3 and 4.

I'd also swap out Jim McElwain for Gary Pinkel too.  I know he had a DUI issue a few years ago, but I think he's paid his dues.  He's built two programs from the bottom up.  I think he could do a great job at Michigan.

When you consider how much revenue stands to be lost by a poor coach hire (just look at them giving away thousands of tickets this season), there's no reason not to open up the check book and put $5M on the table for a Harbaugh. Especially when you consider that costs just $1M more than we are paying Brady Hoke.

Remember back when the Tigers were awful and they had to really overpay guys like Pudge to come here?  That's just about where Michigan is at these days.  If they want Harbaugh -- a guy that has a track record of turning things around at a similar school -- then just open up the checkbook, appeal to his ego, and agree to overpay him and make him the highest paid coach in CFB.  Saban makes $7.3M.  Offer Harbaugh $7.31.

At the end of the day, its only $2m/yr difference and if the team gets rolling again, that will more than pay for itself.

"Jim Tressel – The former head coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes, Tressel was forced to resign three months before the start of the 2011 season for lying to the NCAA about student athletes receiving tattoos and cash for signed memorabilia. According to the NCAA, he had four chances to tell the truth and failed to do so. For this, he was given a five-year show-cause penalty (until December 19, 2016). If he gets another head coaching job before then, he will have to sit out the first five games of the first regular season of his return, as well as any postseason games (including conference championship games and bowl games).[2] "

"Of great concern to the committee was the fact that the former head coach became aware of these violations and decided not to report the violations..."

I want to win, but I wouldn't want to win with this guy. He cheated and he was arrogant about it. Fucking hypocrite, and it's not because he was the Governor of Ohio.

I think those 4 names are considered a home run by the general fan base. If we get someone less well known, there will be unease and lackluster support from many. I think we need a big name. Open that check book wide.
I would take John Harbaugh over Jim, but I don't see it happening. I get a sinking feeling that we are gonna be calling Greg Schiano our new coach, and that does not inspire confidence for me. If we go lower than Miles who is 3rd or 4th on most lists, it shows the disconnect between what we think we are and what the rest of the country thinks we are.

Of course, I want a new AD before anything. Hoke we can keep till the last game, but if we don't move on Brandon and get an experienced and highly liked AD soon, our chances of a home run hire are fantasy.

No John.  He has too many letters in his first name.  We're sticking to three letters or less for the next coach, and ideally two letters.  Gary, Lloyd, Rich, and Brady -- TOO MANY LETTERS.  Bo just needed two letters in his name.  Real Michigan Men don't fuck around with extra letters.

I don't believe this program can take the risk on an unproven coordinator who has zero HC experience. One more wrong hire and we lose a generation ala Notre Dame. So with that said:

  1. Jim Harbaugh
  2. Gary Patterson
  3. Todd Graham
  4. Dan Mullen
  5. Kyle Whittingham
  6. Les Miles
  7. Wildcard - pending the next 4 weeks - Mark Stoops.  If he makes a game of it with Georgia and wins 2 of his last 4, he would move up to 5.

Don't think John H is "realistic".

Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh, Dan Mullen, Mark Stoops, Teryl Austin, Tom Herman, Les Miles

Jim Tressel is tied for 2nd if he doesn't have to deal with that much BS from the show clause

There isn't a coach out there that is not realistic. Here's the draft list of 7 I'm interested in: 1. Jimmy H 1a. Nick Saban 1b. Lloyd Carr 1c. Bill Belichek 5. John Harbaugh 6. Sean Payton 7a. Mark stoops 7b(I) Pat Fitzgerald 7b(ii) Gary Patterson. Anything beyond that we ought to keep Brady, nussmeier or mattison.
