Lance Leipold. Head Coach of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Warhawks, which have been the dominant force in D-III since 2005 winning multiple national titles. Even more impressive than Mount Union. Say what you will about level of competition, but any coach making this kind of history is impressive: 0.943 (100W - 6L) winning percentage, five national championships in seven years and the fastest coach to 100 wins in history. A quick Google search yielded minimal results of what system they run. Landing him as coach may be a long shot. He does coach for his Alma mater...

100-6 Record???? That's ridiculous no matter what level you're coaching on... I'm certain he will get picked up by an FCS or lower tier FBS school within the next 2 years...

Has there ever been a jump from DII / DIII straight to FBS Head Coaching?

This has even less of a shot than Bob Stitt in MGoBlog's dreamworld...

Brian Kelly is the first name that comes to my mind. He became the head coach at Central Michigan after being the head coach at Grand Valley State University for over a decade. As far as a coach making that big of a jump to a school within any of the Power 5 conferences, I'm not sure. Jim Tressel went from FCS Youngstown State to Ohio State FWIW.

go back to bed.  NOW.

I just got up again to let the dog out (dogsitting my daughter's dachshund), peeked in and saw this repeat CC thread on Lance Leipold.

yeah, good coach and all that, but that big a leap?  Y'all must be drunk, high, buzzed, and OD'ing on multiple hallucinogens.

You can't argue with stupid! Having earned 31,000 pts, I would've taken you for an intellectual regarding sports. Perhaps the lowest tier D3 schools may be regarded,as you say, "club" teams. But don't confuse Whitewater or Mount Union football with club teams.

There is no way that this program takes a flyer on a lower tier coach, or top assistant.  The next HC hire will be a big splashy name.

Is there are no big name coaches that are coming to Michigan.  Not in this day and age.  The money is not that different, all the programs are on TV now, and if you are in a power 5 conference you can recruit well - name doesn't mean as much as it used too.  Why go some place like a Michigan or Florida with all the pressure and eyes on you and no real benefits.  Plus you will always live in the shadow of the other greats of the program.

You could theoretically see the Harbaugh's coming here because of the Michigan connection, but they would have to be willing to come to college and Michigan would have to be willing to wait until January, possibly late in January.  Neither of those things are likely.

So taking a Tressel like bet on a very successful coach in a lower division might make a tremendous amount of sense.

Because people like competition? You think MissST or Ole Miss is a better job than M and Florida. They get good coaches. My God, even 11 warriors have high opinion on M than our fans and write a nice piece. Cheer up. It will get better and we will get a good big name coach. This is still a big job.

I am not down. I don't think it has to be a big name coach to have success. In fact, I think an up and comer might have a better chance to succeed. My post is not a pity party, just an honest look at the landscape and what Michigan should do. Do you think the jobs at Miss State and Miss are not getting competition? They are competing for a national championship this year. They have no problems recruiting and will have even less problems now. Unless they decide to not give them a raise, which is unlikely, why leave a great job where you can compete at the top to come rebuild? It used to be that you could not win at those schools, That is not the case anymore. It's not that Michigan is not a great job, it's that the other jobs are pretty good too now, and they pay the same and allow you to recruit the same. There just is not the big advantage anymore.

Yeah, they have D1 caliber athletes because most are D1 transfers or players who could not qualify at a BCS school. They also have budgets 10x or more than their d3 competition. A trained monkey could win a national title at UWW or Mt U when the playing field is completely uneven like that

Hope the content stays this time. Pundit talk of Harbaugh and Miles is not interesting. For me, learning about good coaches who may be more unknown is refreshing information.

Except that we landed a big-name coach in 2007 (RichRod) - and another (Miles) reportedly wanted the job and was snubbed. Let's stop the pity party. Michigan is a plum job and if we're smart about it, we can land a good coach.  Maybe not Mullen, but there are guys to be had if we make an effort.

This is not a Michigan specific comment. It's really true across the board. Big time schools have trouble luring in big time candidates unless they have a past connection. Sark was nowhere near USC's first choice and you will see the same thing happen at Florida this year. Penn State pulled in Franklin, who was from PA and at a school where he did not have a chance to compete, I don't see that sort of candidate available this year. But maybe I am just missing it. You are right, we got Rich Rod, and something like that could happen again, but that was certainly a fairly unique set of circumstances and if you remember we were rejected by the likes of Schiano that year as well.

The problem with this kind of logic is that it assumes there was a time when programs like USC and Texas and Michigan used to make more impressive hires... Pete Carroll or Mack Brown, as their resumes stood, would be soundly rejected by the commenters here. Oklahoma hired Bob Stoops when he was a coordinator. Alabama hired an NFL position coach. Notre Dame hired a High School coach. These blue blood programs tend to promote from within until the bottom falls out, too. A Saban or Meyer or Harbaugh hire being possible relies on EXTREMELY good timing and that's nothing new

"Splashy name?"  LIke Bo Schembechler, Gary Moeller, Lloyd Carr or Brady Hoke?  Yeah, you're right.  It can be reasonably extrapolated that "the next HC hire will be a big splashy name."  After all, they treated Rich Rod, the only splashy name they hired, sooo well.  I'm sure coaches with splashy names are all lined up begging for this job, especially while David Brandon is still here.

In front of Mullen's house, invite Les Miles to finish out his career with a second act a la Spurrier, or hope John Harbaugh is harboring a lifelong desire to coach the maize and blue in his home town. Jim ain't coming, other superstars are spoken for, and we can't take a flyer. Beyond those four names, elevating Nuss is just as good an option as any and you'd possibly hold onto more recruits than, say, a Chad Morris would.

I would just like to be on record as saying that - quite interestingly - this is the second time someone has created a "CC: Lance Leipold" thread. I believe that he had brief stints at FBS schools as an assistant at some level (I think Wisconsin was on of those schools), but the fact that a DIII coach has now come up twice like this is a very MGoBlog moment.

And I think many of you may be shocked to know that many guys coaching on that level are there by choice. They enjoy having time to spend with their family or just having a life in general. The coaches I played for knew and taught other game with great passion and were experts. It's not the goal of all of the lower level guys to climb up to D1.

I would like to fast forward to December or January...all this coach talk. I think Hoke needs t go also....Brandon as well...don't get me wrong its fun to speculate butlooking forward to times when we are dominating teams again, which may not be for a couple years. Let's get our coach and build this program back up.

"long shot" at all. The resources and pay are much, much greater here.

However he is not and should not be s candidate. There is a huge difference between a Power 5 school and a D-III school. It would be an error of Faustian( Gerry, Goethe)proportions to hire a coach with such little experience in high level football. I would consider him as an assistant and groom him to take over aka Chip Kelly at Oregon. But that's the extent to which I would consider him.

One thing to realize is UW- Whitewater is a pretty big school for D3 and should really play in D2 but the UW system has all of its schools outside of a couple that are D1 playing in D3.  Still impressive to go 100-6 but its not a completely level playing field.

Honestly, I am sick of hearing about Harbaughs, Miles, and other "options" that delusional people think we have. I want a head coach that has an impressive track record and shown the ability to dominate his competition over a long time span. This guy fits all that, and I actually just researched him a bit. These are the CC posts that I like, because it sparks new discussion that is grounded in more reality than stealing good football coaches from better jobs in College or the Pros.
