CC: Joe Schad on the case!

Submitted by BRCE on

That ESPN has put this guy on the our coaching change story pretty much ends my turning to the World Wide Leader for updates aside from Schefter.

He just went on TV and said "I'm hearing that in the last couple hours there are some current contractual obligations Jim Harbaugh has that will make it difficult for Michigan to get him." Uhh what would those obligations be, Joe? Didn't elaborate. Then did touch-and-go reports about buyout situations (without mentioning numbers at all) on Les Miles and Brady Hoke. Probably because he went to a few Michigan message boards, saw fans talking about those names, and assumed that's where the list stopped.

What big credible story has this guy EVER broken? Just a horrible journalist.

"I don't really care who's the source on any story. I don't care, and I don't know why people are so worked up about it. All I care about is what is true." - Actual Joe Schad quote from this fall

I have never seen one of these contracts, but I am fairly certain that a material term would be that Habaugh still coaches for Stanford.  Any sort of negative covenant (e.g., thou shall not have any sponsor but Nike after this contract expires) would be unusual, and probably not enforceable.

EDIT: Michigan is three years into an eight year deal with Adidas.  As far as I can tell, Stanford's deal with Nike is similarly with the University.

Negative/Restrictive covenants (ie, preventing you from working for a rival employer as a condition in the contract for your current employment), is not enforceable in California, where Stanford is located.  Other states allow it in limited circumstances and only for limited durations and restrictions, but California bans it altogether.  FWIW.

In support of the OP, if you google "Joe Schad stories broken" the results are not flattering for Mr. Schad.

I easily could be wrong here, but i was under the assumption that Harbaugh has an excemption in his contract that would allow him to leave for Michigan without penalty. (Miles and Hoke too... for what it's worth)

Granted that was last year I heard that, and from a random source... so I without hesitation can be completely wrong on this front.  Just spreading that info out there :)

I don't think anyone has seen Harbaugh's contract.  Stanford is immune from FOI inquiries as a private institution, and I don't think the school nor Harbaugh has ever specifically commented on contract provisions.

I may be wrong, but I believe anything that you have heard is mere speculation or second/third hand information.

No.

We know for a fact that Miles has an addendum to his contract that penalizes him more for leaving for Michigan. I would think it unwise for Stanford to have JH sign a contract that allows him to walk without penalty to Michigan. I would think JH has something similar, but not as high of a penalty.

100% cosign. Love the line about not caring who the source for a story is. No wonder the profession of journalism is in such shitty condition.

“I don’t really care who’s the source in any story.  I don’t care and I don’t know why people are so worked up about it. … I always struggle to understand why there’s such a quest to figure out who exactly passed along what information to who.”

Just think what the MSM would do if a Blog did what he has, and then said that.

If he brings him in without fireing the rest of the D Staff, it'll be GERG all over again pretty much.  The DC can only do so much.  The lack of improvement is the ENTIRE d staff's fault, not just Robinson.  They all must go, or Rod must go for his blind loyalty to his WVU buddies.

Why would Rich stay?  Against every good team that we faced, the offense was as bad as the defense.  If Rich does the offense, that is on him.  Also, how wil replacing the D staff help special teams?  Isn't that Rich's job, as well?

Sorry, if DB retains RR after this, he will be undermining the entire program.

Rich may be a good guy, but the situation at our beloved program has turned toxic, and we need to remove Rich for the good of the program.  Michigan football is more important than Rich Rodriguez.

No one has said anything about Mike Leach as a possible new coach.  I don't know that much about him except that he seemed to have Texas Tech headed towards the big time in 2008-2009.  What does anyone think about him?  Or would his bad press from the Adam James fiasco make him too much of a lightning rod (no pun intended)?

Yup the bad press is REALLY affecting Leach! Right now he is 0-2 in interviews, Miami & Maryland, and the Miami interview came with Donald Trumps letters to the AD n school Prez! Any team that would take a chance on Leach and his legal issues would incure the wrath of ESPN if Leach indeed wins his defamation suit. Not too sure ANYONE is gonna touch him with a 10ft pole until after all legal action is complete.
