CC: JLC 2011 Harbaugh

Submitted by mgoaggie on

Jason La Canfora this morning on CBS just threw something out there I've never heard before...

Harbaugh initially briefly accepted the Michigan job back in 2011, when he was preparing to leave Stanford for other opportunities

I guess I was unaware that we got him one time already.

It already has.  Its one thing to say you don't think Harbaugh will take the job.  Its quite another to make a statement like that.  Its real likely all the college football writers couldn't get the story for 3 years, but then a random NFL guy gets it.  That's real likely.  Especially considering his writing on Harbaugh has been shotty at best not only during this search, but during the 2011 search.

95% of the viewers don't pay attention to the "credibility" of TV entertainers.  No matter what any of them say, as soon as the situation is resolved, most of us forget about who predicted or "reported" what.  Then it goes on to the next story, etc.

The result: "sound bites" and short news cycles to match our collective attention span.  Story done: next story, please...

Jesus at least spell Harbaugh's name right. It's only been spelled correctly on this site for your reference about 49 million times. Sorry, this CC is getting to me. Soon I'll go back to being a kindly old Minnesotan pediatrician widower former minor leaguer.

All I know is that my iPhone autocorrect now changes words spelled in the general proximity of Harbaugh to "Harbaugh."  Pretty soon I'll have used that word in so many texts that Apple will change every word to Harbaugh, just assuming (/knowing) that's what I mean.

Fantasy start em/sit em thread anyone?

I always need at least 4 hours to contemplate everyones advice, ask my wife to randomly pick between two names, and maybe actually analyze the matchups a little bit.

Thanks in advance!

This is the same guy who said that Oakland offered "double" the reported $8M/yr to Harbaugh, then clarified that he meant $100M/10 yrs, thus $10M a year. Thus, a 25% increase, FAR from "double." Ignoring everything else, how can anyone trust a guy so bad at math?

While it's fairly common for us peons to think in terms of annual salary, the total amount of the deal matters a lot (since he would mostly be entitled to it if he were fired without cause). I think it is fairly reasonable to reference the total and talk about doubling in that way.

I don't get guys like Payton or Garrett being on Michigan's radar. Those guys are purely NFL guys, and even in the world where they get fired and come here, who honestly can say they wouldn't ditch us after 2 years when they got a chance to go back to the NFL?

Garrett was a Princeton quarterback. Fritz Crisler coached at Princeton before coming to Michigan. Fritz created the winged helmet while at Princeton. Princeton, a few years ago went back to the winged helmet.

Garrett would therefore be a natural at Michigan.

This has been discussed ad nauseum on this blog. No one really knows what happened between Harbaugh and Michigan in 2011 because the only "source" of information is David Brandon. MSM reporters will throw out random unconfirmed stuff like this years after the fact because nobody can really go back and check it. Kind of like the people who refer to Carr as being "fired" or "resigning."

I'm starting to really believe it's happening. All the analysts have said that if Ross is going after Harbaugh it's a bad sign for Michigan and he's backed off within the last week, everyone from Balas to Webb to Brian to Lorenz to Bacon thinks we have above a 50 percent shot at him, the NFL reporters have gone from we have no shot to 50-50. We'll either be really crushed next week or building Hackett a statue.

1) We're going after him but he's likely going to the NFL. 2) An alum "large donor" type email in individuals name watermarked pic/pdf form (to know who copied it if it leaked out I guess?) from my old boss that said we offered Jim $7M a year along with other fallback candidates...and asking for donations ha. 3) Two days later Brandon almost laughingly states in a presser that he is confident Jim "is going to the NFL, wants to go to the NFL". All but says we're not getting Jim 4) We were taking to Miles. 5) Hoke is hired. 6) We NEVER even negotiated with Jim or Les in 2011, let alone offered the job or specifics of an offer like $7M a year 7) Jim briefly accepted the UM job in 2011. I don't think anyone knows anything about 2011. I think all 4 parties all have different emotions regarding that "search" but the common theme is probably confusion. Again, my old boss called me in to show me a UM header, watermarked email "note/pdf" type document sent to him from a UM email address saying we offered $7M to Jim. Then I hear he was never given anything more than a shitty hello, at best. This is total B.S. or everyone involved has their own version of events lol. ffs.....

This story rather proves that the NFL folks have officially run out of actual things to talk about or to expand upon, much like a lot of other parties involved for the most part. There's never been anything substantive, as I recall, that showed the job was even offered to Harbaugh in 2011 and that writers are rehashing rumors which are now years old and from a previous search just seems like a "Read me!" ploy.

Harbaugh was never contacted in 2011. Brandon did not want him, he mentioned him as wanting to coach in the NFL and this was his excuse, Brandon never had any intention of anybody but hoke.

Does this guy have any basis for his claim JH was offered or accepted the job?  He just kind of says it with no backup whatsoever.  And you wonder how the rumors start.

He told me in person that the decision to hire Hoke was made at the Spring 2010 UM golf outing, which means that RR was a dead man walking the entire season of 2010 because firing him and replacing him with Hoke was already a done deal.
