CC: Harbaugh: "Leaders eat last"

Submitted by lilpenny1316 on

This is tweet from Ryan Sakamoto, a 49ers beat guy.  It's a quote from Harbaugh on NFL Network today discussing the HC opening.

#49ers Harbaugh on Michigan job via NFL Network: "Leaders eat last. My number one priority is winning football games."

Sounds cryptic.  Just wanted to throw the quote out there to see what it means.  Warped minds should definitely chime in.

Here's a link to a 49ers fansite with quote: http://ninerfans.com/49ers-jim-harbaugh-on-michigan-job-leaders-eat-las…

Retired Senior Non-Comissioned Officer here.  WIthout launching a flame session, I think those of us who have served truly understand that the SNCOs were the ones who "ate last" and ensured the junior enlisted were taken care of.  Truth be told, most officers sat together quite isolated from "the troops".  Your version briefs well, though.  Lol.

before asked, and chose to make an oblique leadership statement in response, rather than the run of the mill non-answer.

Second, Bo was less a military guy, but I am wondering if this is a Woody reference. A quick google didn't bring up a reference in lasting lessons, or in reference to Woody, but Woody frequently referenced the military, and Jim draws his lessons from both Bo and Woody.

Nick Saban famously said he wasn't leaving the Dolphins before doing that.  This is at least cryptic.  You could interprete it as the "leaders" aka "leaders and best" get addressed after the season is over.

Ahh, the famous Marine saying.  I betcha he said this as a subtle jab to Hoke's tendency to take the seniors to meet with the Navy SEALs

And Army, and Navy, don't know about Air Force.  But yes, leaders do eat last.  What's the point?  The point is that leaders like to eat too, so if they eat last they'll ensure everyone has enough to eat.

Why people like to scoff and mock this principle bottles the mind.

It's a great quote honestly. "Leaders eat last". You make sure your troops eat their fill, then you eat. He's not slighting Michigan in my opinion. The door is still open, he just needs to step in

it means to let subordinates eat first.

"The answer became clear during a conversation with a Marine Corps general. "Officers eat last," he said.Sinek watched as the most junior Marines ate first, while the most senior Marines took their place at the back of the line. What's symbolic in the chow hall is deadly serious on the battlefield: great leaders sacrifice their own comfort - even their own survival - for the good of those in their care."

"Leaders eat last" is a military saying. It means a leader makes sure his troops are taken care of first, then takes care of himself.

Seems like a strange thing to say, but I guess he means he wants to take care of the 49ers before taking care of himself. It's a good trait for a leader to have.

already been posted and a good candidate for deletion by the mods.  This one inparticular was posted in "As a principle I don't talk about any other job other than the one that I have.  Not a cheap mgo points grab.  I've been here over 3 years and seldom post which explains my low mgo points.

If there's something noteworthy about this, it's that he isn't even pretending to want to return to SF next year.  I have no idea whether Harbaugh is coming to Michigan.  I'm damn sure he's going somewhere.

By SImon Sinek.  Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don't.    Saw him talking about it on a mid-game  piece, for CBS, a year or so ago.

I think the response is pretty cut and dry:  Team first.  Regardless of what's going on beyond the scenes with him the SF brass or other teams/schools trying to court him, they are irrelevent during the season as he's putting their needs first and foremost before any distractions or desires that he may have.

I certainly wish it could have been more cryptic and tipped his hand a bit, but that was very stoic Jim Harbaugh thing to say that does mean much as far as we're concerned.

Since we're parsing through things Harbaugh said and applying an embarrassing amount of scrutiny to them...

Harbaugh sure did go out of his way to use the word "professional" a lot. He said it repeatedly. For a guy so many are convinced will be our coach, him spending an inordinate amount of time talking about how he is a professional on the professional level, probably isn't a good sign.

He is sending secret messages, it is not a coincidence. Did anybody watch any recent pressers? Was he blinking out Morse code? "Leaders eat last" sounds an awful lot like a part of a certain fight song for a certain school that I beleive we all are pretty obsessed over.

Harbaugh has his down correctly, first take care of what you are currently engaged in, secondly, take care of your support group, and make sure they are O.K., lastly, take care of yourself. Funny how so many people have their priorities backwards.
