Whaaaa...Jason Kapsner? Who in the holy name of Shatner is that? He must have burned out or something. Anybody know?

He was a backup for a few years. Never did anything. I don't remember him ever taking a meaningful snap, although I think he might have played a few Milicic minutes.

A quick google search lead me to this from the Michigan Daily:
"Jason Kapsner has improved," Carr said. "But he needs to show he can lead a team. For a quarterback, that means getting your team into the end zone."
Kapsner, who redshirted two years ago when Griese and Dreisbach split time and rarely played last season, is finally at the point where he knows the offense and is able to "react," Carr said.
"He doesn't have to do as much thinking as a guy who just walks in," he said.
Unfortunately for him, that guy who is about to walk in - Brighton senior Drew Henson - is one of the nation's top quarterback recruits. Carr refused to stamp out the possibility that Henson could win the job, but remained cautious about naming anyone other than Brady.

I actually remember this guy's name, and I was sure he had taken a few snaps in clean up duty. I had no idea he was the #2 rated pro-style QB when he was recruited, but his stats sure show it! This is from mgoblue.com

Wow, some short memories here. Kapsner was a blue-chip (yes, blue-chip) recruit out of Minnesota in the '96 recruiting class. He was massively hyped at the time and it was assumed that he'd overtake the two QBs from the year before him (Tom Brady and DiAllo Johnson) and become the heir apparent to Dreisbach/Griese - if not beat them out, too. But he ended up falling behind Brady, and then Henson, and never saw much time. He did not stay for his fifth year (which was too bad because if he had, he would have presumably started the first three games of 2000, when Henson went down, instead of the frosh Navarre).
Anyway, keep his story in mind when you hear about highly touted QB recruits. Sometimes they step in and pan out right away, like Henne, but sometimes they end up like Kapsner. Don't expect Forcier/Beaver to be a saviour next year.

It's not necessarily that we have short memories. It's that when I was 15 years old, I didn't pay much attention to college recruiting.

I found that article very interesting, because you can look down the line and see all the guys who didn't stay with the program or didn't pan out. And if the classes are comparable, as Rivals claims, then perhaps we can expect a similar amount of attrition or underachievement.
I didn't realize Jason Kapsner was the #2 ranked pro-style QB at the time.
My guesses for players who will underachieve (people are going to ride my ass for this, though):

It's just a feeling, for the most part. I just don't really see the athleticism in him to be a very good DE. I see some Pat Massey in him.

That really goes to show you how crazy these college careers end up in comparison to their recruiting accolades. I only recognize 6 of Carr's recruits.

great post. Didn't realize Hutch was recruited as a DL, and forgotten Ian Gold was recruited as a RB.

That was a pretty good DL class. David Brandt was on the Chargers practice team for a while (he might still be, I dunno). Hutchinson is a potential Hall of Fame guard. And Eric Wilson was a captain and has bounced around the NFL and CFL.

pretty good class for Lloyd, lots of those guys contributed to the 97 and beyond team. I remember Russell Shaw, he didnt do much but i remember one big catch he made vs. ND that kept a drive a live.
More than anything it shows how off these recruiting ratings can be...Kapsner never did anything behind Brady (not rated by anyone), Griese (a walk on) and Driesbach.... all those guy played in the NFL except Kapsner.... Last i read, Kapsner is now a financial analyst in Minnesota.
Steve Hutchinson 23 OL...? now on his way to a possible HOF career in the NFL with multiple pro bowls... Dhani Jones not rated, ended up with a near 10 year pro career etc.

There are 6 great players off of that incoming class. And a JUCO? What. I wonder if Lloyd caught flack for recruiting him.

He left because of off-field health issues (clinical depression, I think). Carr kept in touch with him and, I think, still does.

Back to the original comparison, we should probably note that Carr did not become our permanent head coach until November 1995, pretty deep into the recruiting season. It's to his credit that he was able to pull off a pretty solid class despite that handicap.

Sometimes I wish it were easier to find past recruiting rankings online (prior to 2002). I didn't even follow recruiting in '02, so I had no idea what was going on before then.
