Camp update from Sam Webb

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Pretty good stuff, as always.

From his "Inside the Sub" series, this one is free.

If Ulizio has really inserted himself into the mix at RT, that is outstanding news.  Would mean at least another viable contender (and depth) at that spot.  CB race is going to be so interesting, but as a poster in another thread mentioned, Metellus locking down the other safety spot has to be one of the best developments this spring/fall.  Funny I don't think I've heard Glasgow's name once during this camp, after so much visibility in the spring.

In the comments there's a minor panic about a Hurst injury, but it seems to have been talked down.

As it says in the post, it means another body and depth. We don't know much about JBB or Runyan, if another guy has come on that the coaches want to give a look, that can only be good. Can I ask why you think this is bad, having another guy competing?

Ulizio has the measurables and is very aggressive.  He is a lunch pail type player who brings it every play.  This is good news that he is in the mix.

For clarification CoverZero, are you saying he brings his lunch pail with him on every play? Is that legal? What does he have in his lunch pail, grit or gritz? Film room guy, just a guy or a Don Brown Guy? Coach on the field or just on the field?

Nobody is, was, or will say it isn't a concern!  The difference between Witty and everyone else - Witty says that a 3rd person pushing for the job is bad, everyone else thinks its good.  That's the only friggen difference in what's being said!  That in itself is fine.  The negs come with his attitude that everyone else is wrong because we don't agree with him.  To me, he sounds like a drunk asshat...

Is the third person pushing for the job because the "light has turned on" for them and they've caught other candidates that are progressing nicely? Or is the third person pushing for the job because they have progressed some while the original two candidates have stagnated? Having a third candidate is not necessarily "good". Not in agreement with the approach witty took, but it is certainly within the realm of possibility that this is a bad sign. In fact I think it is more likely a bad sign then a good one, so not everyone else besides witty thinks the same.

You give 2 scenarios there and they're both good: improving players are passed by player who.improved more, or stagnating players are passed by player who improved more. I feel like you set up the 2nd scenario as being bad, but would you rather have the two stagnating players not be passed?

in the "stagnating" scenario I didn't say or intend that the third player had passed the other two, but merely has closed the gap some. Ie, suppose at start of camp two players are 80% "there", with the third 60%. in the middle of camp if the two are still at 80%, while the third has progressed to 75% the third would now be in the conversation but it would be "bad" because overall the players on the two deep haven't progressed.

Here's a hint for somewittyname.  "Not trying to be a dick in the slightest, but" is usually a reliable indicator of the penile nature of what follows the preface.

I can see why someone might say this based on his relatively low recruit rankings, but he's been in the program for a while and OL is really hard to predict. We've had some great OL who were not highly ranked as recruits (like David molk) and 4/5 stars who weren't that great. If he's in the mix, it could be because the line is bad, but it could also be because he's worked hard and is playing well. I think most people choose to see it that way. Also, Harbaugh wouldn't keep someone on the team if he didn't think they could compete for a job. This isn't charity. So the fact is that the expectation is that he should be challenging for starting time like everyone else. Does he win it, let's see.

I believe that it's indicative of Ulizio showing well in his other reps and getting a look with the ones as a result. The coaches aren't just throwing shit against the wall to see what sticks. Sometimes in sports things just click at some point. A kid who was making mental errors but was physically up to par all of a sudden "gets it". Lots of possible reasons for Ulizio to get some love. Would I prefer a clear #1 stand out returning OL? Sure. But I'm willing to bet there are kids (not expected to start) getting time with the 1's at every position. Nobody sees that as a sign of concern by the staff. Yeah, I know, the RT needs as many reps as possible... blah blah. blah. Personally, I'm thinking between Drevno, Frey and Harbaugh they know how to manage this "crisis"! You can't preach meritocracy without giving guys who excel in practice a taste of running with the starters. Sorry, but if the staff was overly concerned about the RT position I'd see Bredeson moving there and back filling left guard. We seem to have depth at guard with Ruiz and others.Just a thought, but it makes me believe they aren't struggling to find ANY guy for RT, just the BEST guy. But then again, I'm sitting at a bar in Honolulu (1 year work gig) and mg glass is DEFINITELY half full! (Which means I have to sign off and get a refill.) PS - I just spent a crapload of points negging SWN up and down this thread. Feel free to hook a brother up!

It's not good news. It's not bad news either. Aside from injury, camp news means nothing. It's simply fodder for bloodthirsty fans. Guys are competing, that's all this means. Chill out and wait for the Gators.

and the villain of this thread? They're jumping on one little line from Sam and seem to be completely ignoring Sam's disclaimer. I should also point out that Ulizio has been in this competition all along. Drevno about 10 days ago said the RT competition was between JBB and Ulizio.

Isaac running with the ones in practice is another positive sign. But as I said regarding other positions, I’d hesitate to look at as a definitive sign of the expected hierarchy. Many fans incorrectly assumed that Chris Evans had lost ground in the race when word of Higdon getting run with the ones came out recently. Don’t make the same premature mistake twice. Just take this to be a positive sign Isaac’s growth.

He probably, like, practiced and lifted weights so he could get better and stronger.

It was tough though, because the 3-stars have to wait until the good players are done in the weight room before they can use it in between cleaning the gym and massaging 4+-star players.

The defense getting so much positive talk makes me confident we'll have another outstanding defense. Maybe not top 3 but certainly top 15. Hopefully the OL will turn out to be serviceable. That right side.... No mention of Peters so it really is a Speight/O'Korn battle. I dint care who wins but having serious competition for the job is great

Believing what the coaches say to be true that it's a Wilton/O'Korn race, assuming Wilton wins out and stays for 2018 it will be interesting to see what happens with Peters. If it's true he has problems with command and speaking up its possible (assuming Wiltons here for 2018) hes passed over for McCaffery since he'd have 2.5 years in the system.

My biggest worry about Viper is WR screens. Peppers's ability to avoid blocks and time his surge into the backfield for a TFL was uncanny, and removing those plays from opponents' playbooks was huge.

But hopefully, our corners will be more athletic and be able to get off their blocks and blow up the screens.  Also, having speed from the LB spots will help as well.  Plus our D Line may pick off a couple at the LOS.

Thanks for posting. Sounds like Washington is ahead of Ambry Thomas according to this update. I know the CBs are a concern point amongst the fanbase, but the good news is that we have plenty of options and fierce competition.

Hudson will be a better overall run stopper than Peppers.

Kurt Taylor will see a lot of carries during his career here but is probably in line for a redshirt this season. Sam's note of his running vision is why I think he'll be able to make positive yards. He's not going to be a home run threat but is going to be steady and reliable.

The starter is the best player on the team at any given position. I like Kurt Taylor, too, but come on. He's not even the best RB in this recruiting class. I'm way too high on O'Maury Samuels to think that Taylor will ever be a starter here.

Derrick Green had not one but two games over a hundred years and we all know he didn't work out. All it takes is one game at home against a cupcake.

And that's assuming Taylor doesn't work out--it's way too early to say that. If he ends up in the Vincent Smith role, he'll get his chance at carrying the ball.
