Calm the F Down

Can anybody use their fucking common sense. All this shit about the bball team is ridiculous. Here are the facts. 1. John Belein is a great coach. Who says?? His peers that voted him the best tactician in the game 2 years ago. 2. Can he recruit?? We brought in Morris who was a top 100 player last year. This year he brings in Smotryz and Hardaway top 100 players and is still in on Zeigler another top 100 player. For the next class he has Brundige a top 100 player signed and in on several others. Not bad. 3. He took a mis-mash of walk ons, Manny Harris and D. Sims to the NCAA last year and won a game. Something that hasn't happened in a decade. It's been a tough stretch for Michigan and next year does not appear to be anything special, but sometimes it takes a while. He got dealt a bad hand with Benzig and Cronin not being able to play as well as Udoh 's transfer. Much like RR, Beielin was dealt a roster with 2.5 players on it. Unless you are willing to pay for your players like Calipari it takes a little bit of time to fill out your roster. Morris is flashing potential and we got some nice kids coming in. Let's let Beilein lay the groundwork and get this thing up and running. A return of Harris and a surprise from 1 of the redhshirts or Smotryz excelling right away and this team could be pretty good as soon as next year.

am happy to see people up in arms over this defeat. It shows that people still care about the basketball program and expect a showing that is representative of Michigan. On that note... I agree with the OP. It was a rough year, step back, take a breath and we'll evaluate more as our class is filled up and the season is actually over.

The last couple years with a football/basketball combo has not been good for my heart or my blood pressure. I can't listen to the radio for days after and I want to punch someone in the face, but I think you need to seperate games from the ultimate goal. I have seen nothing from RR or Belein to shake my faith in them for the long term. Do I question them after every game?? Yep. Until I see things that show we're not improving I won't question their employment. I look at their rosters and I see gaping holes. They have been here a few years and we need to see better, but I'm liking where we are headed.

I get what you're saying here, but you're just being a lemming. Crap year, awesome year, crap year. That's the Beilein legacy as it stands right now - like it or not. I'm willing to forgive a few crap years and I love the guy for getting us back to the tournament, but... Doesn't that just mean last year was a mirage? I heard the announcers talking today about "sometimes shooters just don't have their shot". Well F that because it's been this way ALL YEAR LONG. After we get a big win, we get blown out. Just look at the game log this season. I'll give the guy one more year - but another embarrassing season like this one and he's out. Just because we made the final 32 in one of his seasons doesn't make him God at Michigan.

You're right: compare RR to Beilein RIGHT THE F NOW OR YOU'RE A LEMMING. I'm glad that you're giving the guy, who has been successful everywhere, everytime, ONE MORE YEAR. And to think we made Brandon the new AD instead of Beavis.

But was it really that embarrassing? They basically lost a couple of close games and never picked up that "marquee" win you needed for the NCAA resume. Sure, you'd like to see them win 20+ games and challenge for a bid, but last year they clearly road a couple of early-season upsets to a bid, and were overrated heading into the season.

Other than what the announcers said today, I haven't mentioned today at all. It's a season long frustration that I've gone through with this team. And it sucks because last year I had a 90-hour a week job and this season, I've been unemployed. So I've been able to witness all of these games despite being out of college. Embarrassments this year: - Blown out at Utah, a team that has a LOSING record this year. - Loss to Bama, who is 6-10 in the SEC - Same story about BC (also 6-10 in their conference) - Lost to Indiana when their best player was hurt - Lost at home to Northwestern - Lost at home to Penn State I mean... yeah "was it really that embarrassing?" Well, at a UofM alum living in Chicago (aka B10 country), it is quite embarrassing.

Generally hobbies shouldn't lead to you being embarrassed by them, unless it is something kind of weird like collecting those little Anime pillows-as-girlfriends or being a grown man who is really into romantic Harry Potter fan fiction.

Well, sorry to hear you lost your job (though to be fair, 90-hour weeks doesn't sound particularly fun or, um, livable), but maybe this isn't the time to get that invested in a bunch of teenagers and early 20-somethings. Life is more than sports, and while it sucks to watch your alma mater lose, it really shouldn't be embarrassing provided they at least put up a fight. And if we are going to get into what something that would be embarrassing to me as an alum, look no further than Maryland's fans whenever they play Duke. Those idiots riot after a regular-season win, and dispense such vitriol that even the coach has had to tell them numerous times to cut it out. That is what you call embarrassing.

Totally agree with you. I was reading a recap of a game a couple weeks ago and it said Michigan returned 6 of their top scorers this year and that got me thinking of Beilein's last year at WV he lost his top 6 scorers from the previous season and still won the NIT championship and had wins over 2 top 10 teams. I was checking out the players they lost and it was astonishing he did so well. He lost Kevin Pittsnogale,Mike Gansey, Patrick Beilein and many others. We have a good coach in Beilein. We just need more depth. We have a SF starting at PF,a SG starting at PG, and a PF starting at C. That goes to show you how weird this season has been. Beilein’s results from his last year at WV http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/teams/schedule?teamId=277&year=2007

Something I posted about two months ago after some research when this all started to go wrong, in an attempt to further back you up: "Without getting into a huge thing, Beilein has MADE the program successful everywhere he's been. Canisius was 8-22 before he got there; in his five years they went to one NCAA tournament and 2 NITs. He went 100-52 at Richmond, with one NCAA tournament (upset 3 seed S.Carolina) and went to two NITs. He took over a mediocre WVU program and after a couple years getting his guys in, made two deep tournament runs and won an NIT. He is widely considered one of the few best coaches in basketball and has won multiple COY awards. At Michigan, as you know, he took over a truly mediocre program (I love them, but you know, the failures) and took them to the 2nd round with walk-ons playing a huge role (and we desperately miss those guys this year)."

I truly believe that once the practice center is open, it will not only increase and improve our practices, but it will also be a main attraction for top-level recruits. It seems that we may be prepared strategy-wise, but physically, there's a lot that can be desired. I feel that our players aren't getting the appropriate strength and conditioning when big Cs and PFs power their way into the paint and have their way with us.

Totally agree with your take. This sucks and we're all sick of the losing. But we've got proven coaches and they're working their butts off to build programs from the ground up. I'll take that over Calipari's M.O. anytime. Still, this season sucked.

Does anyone else see the irony in John Beilein taking heat for not getting us back to where we were last year, in which he was responsible for the best season UM basketball has had in 12 years? Apparently he shouldn't have overachieved last year.

Beilein's recruiting(or lack thereof) has been absolutely aweful. You cannnot really argue with that. The possibility of a team featuring Morris Brundige Hardaway and Zeigler leaves plenty of room for optimism though. I think you've got to reserve judgement until we see how Beilein closes with Zeigler and how a Deshawn-less team responds next year.

Have you not been a Michigan basketball fan since the fab five years? We haven't been a good basketball team consistently since then (for obvious reasons) and all of a sudden you think that we should be winning every year when we haven't in over 10 years. You can't see the forest through the trees.

Amaker's first couple of recruiting classes were obviously a lot better than Beilein's. Amaker unfortunately couldn't do anything with them, and didn't recruit another legitimate big ten player until Deshawn and Udoh years later. So yes, I think we should at least give Beilein another year, maybe two to turn things around. We gave Amaker like 6 right?

mikefromaa

March 7th, 2010 at 10:47 PM ^

I should have written that while the players Beilein has brought in are simply not good enough to compete in the big ten, the players he may bring in in the next two years could really turn things around. I guess I should have spelled that out better?

You realize that John Beilein has only 4 people total on the team right now that are not true freshmen, right? Also, I would argue that Beilein's players are playing nearly as well as the MSU players that are freshmen and sophomores. I really don't want to do the research, but I would guess that the combo of Lucas-Perry/Novak/Douglas/Morris/Vogrich would have averages similar to the MSU freshmen and Sophomores.

BigBlue02

March 8th, 2010 at 12:32 AM ^

That's not even mentioning Darrius Morris whose numbers are double the numbers of the entire MSU freshmen class combined. Belein is having as much trouble as any other coach who was left with 2 good players who won't make it in the NBA and a bench that ran zero deep when he took over.

Some people are talking about the NIT as if it was what it once was. The NIT is now a consolation tournament big schools like Michigan and West Virginia should not list NIT appearances under successes, I understand listing them as successes for Cansisius and Richmond (although the A10 is strong nowadays) but no big 6 conference team should be happy with an NIT berth

I have been drinking for a few hours. Still not happy. I mean, I am not crazy mad, but I really wanted to see our team look like they had a chance. Darn.

The most discouraging thing that I took away from this game was the total lack of pride certain players seem to have wearing the maize and blue. To lose a game is one thing, but to not show up is totally wrong. The quicker we put an end to the Amaker kids, the better this program will be.
