Calling SixZero: T-Shirt Idea

Submitted by LJ on

I think one of the many talented graphic artists on this board should make a shirt that is just a silhouette of Denard on one knee after a score (Maize shirt, maybe black or Blue silhouette) with the signature dreads coming out of the helmet.  Something similar to the Woodson heisman shirt that was available in the MGoStore for awhile.  Anyone out there want to give this a shot?  You've got at least one buyer already.

I guess I'm not sure how adament they are with their C&D orders, but I would think that would be a harder case than some of the other ones.  There's no clear M trademarks like the block M or winged helmet, no number on the jersey, etc.  Just a football player on one knee.  Seems more generec than some of the things that have been pulled recently.

I guess it's Denard's likeness, but it wouldn't be clearly so and it could be considered somewhat transformative (though I'm certainly not an IP law expert).

Yeah, that is the reason that Michigan wanted them taken down.  You're not allowed to sell student-athlete products.

I think there would be a reasonable argument against it being an NCAA violation (as long as their was no number 16 on it).  However, Underground Printing isn't going to fight the University on it since they sell University apparel.

Not a bad idea and maybe not in violation of NCAA rules.  But I'm sure Michigan would object to it and get it taken down.

I do not have the rights for the original image, so treat lightly.

full size here. please let me know if this needs to come down - don't want anyone to get in trouble. if this is kosher, I want a shirt.

That's pretty awesome.  Good work.

It's not going to get made into an mgoshirt but you can certainly put that picture up.  People can use it as a background image or order their own individual shirts.

I don't want to speak for Brian, UGP, or anyone other than myself, but I've thought it best to maintain a degree of silence over the past few weeks.  BUT, I'm going to offer you this simple perspective.  So, here's the thing:

From my speculative point of view, what started to make Athletic Dept. and ultimately the University nervous about all of these t-shirts all boils down to one thing:

DILITHIUM.

There were some products pulled from the MGoStore.  If you ask me, it's all fairly simple, and what it all boils down to is the absolute national if not global phenomenon of Denard Robinson that's struck over the past month.  It's been hard enough to keep things by the book since the infractions dropped, but now that THE SHOELACE EFFECT has happened, he essentially has become as much a brand of Michigan football as the block M and the winged helmet.  And brands are, and should be, protected... for a million reasons that have all been mentioned before.  So yes, in terms of any possible shirts you could ever imagine-- Denard Robinson is absolutely untouchable.

And I support their decision, and I certainly support UGP's cooperation.  If you love the University of Michigan, don't be in such a rush to take sides against them.  Go buy some adidas swag.  Grab a #16.

PS.  Mine's a Navarre, but I don't think that really matters, does it?
