Have there been DCs who tried and failed as HCs? I can only think of OCs.

Not that I'm jazzed about Patricia. I don't know that the Pats' defense has been a super inspiring unit the past few years (not necessarily bad, just not noteworthy).

While I feel for anyone who loses a job, I hope the fact that the Lions are firing a coach that just went 9-7 is a sign of a higher standard in Lions' HQ.

and long suffering at that, wish the Browns would show 1-31 Hue Jackson the door as well

What names do Lions fans want to see as candidates to replace Caldwell?

Happy New Year to all!

Otherwise I guess you have to give Quinn a shot at bringing in his guy, but the NFL really isn't a coach's league.  It's on Quinn to improve in the draft which has been the Lions problem for decades.

If your ultimate goal is to win a playoff game, which is about where most Lions fans expectations are since they've been emotionally abused for decades, then Caldwell is your guy. But there's no way he could get to the conference championship game and outcoach anyone else. His limit is maybe lucking his way to the semi finals. He's about on par with Brady Hoke in terms of in game management.

Agreed. The guy is horrible in-game. And sometimes conservative to the point of parody. They were down 10 in the 4th quarter one time with under 4 minutes to play. It was 4th and 2 or 3 at midfield. He decides to punt. It wasn't even a defensive battle. Both teams had been moving the ball all day. Here's the kicker: They end up not getting the right personnel in and have to call a timeout. They punt after the timeout and never get the ball back. That is Caldwell.

10 times out of 10 you should go for it in that situation. It's a shortened (somewhat) field and you have one play to get 2 or 3 yards vs. needing a whole bunch of plays to go your way as well as not giving up a first down.

I want an aggressive head coach, one who expects to win, not one who plays not to lose. And one that can get 11 guys on the field FFS.

I kinda think he should’ve gotten another year? Dude had a pretty good record, went to the playoffs twice. Meh, it’s the Lions and it’s about as good as it ever gets with them. Meanwhile, the Lions are going to be competing with a lot of other teams for a coach, and I’m not exactly thrilled at the prospect of being yet another team that fails miserably playing Bill Belichick Coaching Tree Roulette. That loss to the Bengals was brutal though, and the run game was miserable even for a pass-oriented team. So whatever I guess.

I get it. He's not a great game day coach. But nobody seems to want to acknowledge that he's built a stable team that plays for him and wins their fair share of games. He's responsible for a lot, does a lot right, and gets credit for nothing.

I'm glad the expectation is higher than "we don't necessarily suck", but if I know my Lions, they'll be 5-11 next year and this will end up looking like a terrible move.
