Brandstatter vs Rutgers

Submitted by billygoblue on November 12th, 2018 at 12:54 PM

Listened to the first quarter of the Rutgers game on the radio.  When Rutgers scored their touchdown, Brandstatter was having a discussion with Doug Karsch re Nordin's kicking & all of a sudden he starts describing the long run for the TD, --he might go all the way or something like that, but he said it was Blackshear with the ball & I didn't find out till much later, that it was Pacheco who was the runner.  I did not tune in again till late in the 3rd quarter, while I was in the car.  I decided to listen to the game on XM with the Rutgers announcers doing the game.

It could be worse for us, we could have these guys.  They made Brandstatter & crew sound like the BBC describing a Test Match at Wembley or wherever they play cricket.  There was a PBP guy and a color guy talking about the game, and every once in awhile a 3rd voice would chime in from somewhere. I figured they had 3 in the booth.  Eventually it was revealed that the 3rd voice was the sideline guy, but he would throw in his comments whenever he had an opportunity--they never called on him, he just piped up when he felt moved to do so.  It all sounded like three guys in a bar, watching a game on TV & making their comments on the action.  The color guy even ripped the QB when he threw that late interception--after Sitkowski had gone 70 or 80 pass attempts without an INT.

Granted that it was only vs Rutgers, but maybe we don't have the worst.  Although it would be nice one Saturday if Brandstatter had to go to a wedding or something & we might get a fill-in like Dickerson or even Doug Karsch to see what they could do.

Actually, I thought that the ones who broadcast the Northwood game did pretty well. (Don't know if this is the game you're talking about.) I agree, though, that it seemed to be a student broadcast. I didn't see the Holy Cross game (or know if it was even broadcast), so I can't comment on that one.

I always listen to the radio while watching TV, so his misidentification of players isn’t a big deal— either way he usually corrects himself shortly afterward.

I don’t think anyone would say he’s anywhere near a good pbp guy, but as others have said I really don’t care. I actually really enjoy the banter he and Dierdorf have, they make me laugh out loud quite a few times during each game— whether it’s the lame jokes or the offensive linemen banter about crushing the opposing defense.

His pbp in no way makes the game experience any worse for me (the tv broadcasters always annoy me to no end), but I’d be fine with them bringing in a solid pbp guy and moving to a three man booth. I think that would assuage most complaints and could be a fun dynamic.

Some frustration is understandable but there's also much to appreciate about Brandy.  He could make simple changes that would go a long way, such as "Complete to" instead of "he's got" [receiver name].  He's never going to be the disciplined style of Formation/Names/Positions etc. that was Bob Ufer or for that matter, Frank Beckmann, but he does inject the most delightful of comments.  "SACK TIME!" is music to the ears this season.  It's a good team with Karsh on the sidelines and either Dierdorf or Jansen.  Speaking of, I'm a little worried about Dan Dierdorf as he has missed several games now, due to some vague schedule conflict.  I hope he's doing OK.

Brandy is a Michigan man and a good person. He has done fine work.

But I don't care what anyone says. You simply CANNOT have two color guys announcing Michigan football games.

Frank Broyles and Ara Parseghian calling football games would have been a media catastrophe.

You NEED a Keith Jackson, a Lindsey Nelson, an Al Michaels, a Larry Munson, a Bob Ufer, a Lyle Bremser.  It's kind of a rule you just don't break.

There are no substitutes.

One of the NFL networks tried that - I'd guess back in the early 90s. They intentionally tried to go with two color guys and no PBP because all of the action was on the screen anyway.

It was a disaster and was immediately scrapped.

A couple decades later, Michigan Football is on year 5 of trying to cram that square peg in the round hole.

That was FOX in 1995 --- they decided to have Terry Bradshaw and Jimmy Johnson do an Arizona @ San Diego game late in the year.  Arizona was absolutely awful that year but the Chargers were hanging around the fringes of the AFC playoff race.  So the game mattered, and it was also a national broadcast: one of those December Saturday afternoon games the NFL used to have.

As you said, it was AWFUL.  Each tried play-by-play, and stumbled all over the place.

M fans have to complain about something.

Enjoy the Season.

I Enjoy Brandy every time I hear Touchdown Michigan,  even if I not sure what player scored.

Go Blue.

Also, they need to stick a microphone out the window during games.  It's way better on radio when they actually pick up the crowd noise and announcer is describing events over it.

I will admire and have a sentimental feeling for Brandstatter based solely on the joy Michigan Replay brought my dad and me and my brothers growing up.  His rapport with Bo reminded me of the admiration and love my dad had fro his brothers.  They were pseudo uncles.

That said, the reason we have him and Dierdorf is the same culture that brought us Coach Hoke.  They can stay, however, until their performance impacts the bottom line.  Instead of coming on here and laying a negative vibe, stop listening and tell the stations that you are stopping.  That will allow him the modest respect he deserves and you will eventually get your outcome.

Always loved him until he took over PBP. I can't stand to listen to a close game. It's too nerve-wracking with him constantly fucking up the calls

There's a pretty easy solution to all of this. (at least for the next 2 games)

Everyone in the booth shut up and just run a mic feed from Chase Winovich for the entirety of the game.

Brandstatter messes up a bit but I attribute it to be excited and an honest to goodness fan. I still like him. He’s become like a part of the tradition and I’d hate to see him go. It’s clear he loves Michigan football.

I also had to listen to some of the game on SiriusXM and wow, yeah. those Rutgers guys were amateurish. Especially the color guy. He kept complaining that Rutgers had to "open up the offense" as if Rutgers wasn't succeeding because of some sort of choice they were making. Stumbled over his words, rambled, left the hooks from his partners hanging, and generally sounded like your grumpy buddy on the couch.

It could be much worse. Herbstreit is like fingernails on a chalkboard for me. Even when he seems to be legitimately trying to not be a gaping homer it leaks out all over. The last two games I've muted the TV and sync'd up WTKA.

Most of the color commentators these days sound like they think they should be the head coach. My version of "color" is something other than back seat coaching. And they are ADHD in their unwillingness to let there be an instant of silence. Hint: Not every moment needs to be filled in inane blather; let us rest our ears for a second here and there.

I heard the Rutgers broadcast on satellite radio as well. That may have been the worst college radio broadcast I have ever heard. Expected homerism, but they were constantly arguing with other and generally incomprehensible.

I was on a road trip and was listening to the Rutgers crew calling the game. They were annoying as hell but after a Rutgers return was called back because of a hold that the PBP guy called questionable, the color guy went nuts, sounded like your drunk buddy bitchin about the call. I couldn't take it anymore and quickly googled the channel for the away team broadcast on Sirius and happily listened to Brandy the rest of the game. We could have it worse!

Listen to any other B1G announcers on XM.  They all sound like they are still in the school of broadcasting at whatever university.  No analysis after the play, no history, no nothing but "Smith takes the handoff for two.  Second and eight".  I can stand an occasional misidentification if it is corrected if i get "Ruiz got a great pull to flatten the defensive end".

Yeah, that was horrible announcing by the Rutgers radio crew. Why did XM/Sirr  have to take that feed and not the UM announcers? I was driving back from work listening to those fools and they were cussing out Harbaugh for not taking a knee in the last few minutes.

I was in the same situation, driving home from work,  The color guy calling Harbaugh classless and that he had no respect for him for running up the middle.  I was surprised to hear the pbp guy defending Harbaugh, saying he had not problem with the backups getting an opportunity.  The color commentator was having nothing of it and it appeared to be getting heated in the booth.

Speaking of cricket, I have seen a match at Lord's Cricket Ground in my lifetime, but the entire time, the back end of the Village Idiots sketch from the Flying Circus kept coming to mind....

"The home of these urban idiots is here in St. John's Wood...."

Like them or not, Brandy and Dierdorf aren't capable of a quality broadcast.

I think Shepard would be good, like he is at basketball.

Karsch on the sideline and maybe Jansen doing color.

I agree his strength is in color commentary.  But he got screwed by the Lions, so I'd rather not see him get screwed again.  Let him take his time and retire when he's ready.

Listening to the crowd reaction in the background usually tells you more about the game than Brandy does. Brandy is a great guy, just not the right gig for him. I like Dierdorf though. Sometimes, I think even he gets frustrated with Brandy.
