Brandin Hawthorne and Vincent Smith: Award

Submitted by TomVH on
Brandin Hawthorne just told me he was awarded Florida Defensive Player of the Year for small schools. His teammate Vincent Smith was also awarded Offensive Player of the Year. Brandin told me the reason he won this award was because, "I think that I carried my team defense on my back the whole year. I play harder for me and for my (former) teammate Norman Griffith, who got killed this season. So I had to play for me and him. That's what I did, now I have won my final championship."

The only game I was able to catch of these two down here was the state championship game. Smith is an impressive running back, there is no doubt about that. He rushed for 120 (or so) yards in the game, which isn't a lot, but the other team was stacked up to stop the run. He had a huge kickoff return that set up the game winning TD. He's a very smooth and fluid runner.

Vincent Smith is supposed to play running back. But that's a very fluid position, as we saw this year with Shaw and McGuffie. Shaw was supposed to come in and play the slot, and he ended up being our second-best RB, in my opinion. McGuffie was supposed to come in and play RB, and he ended up being our second-best slot receiver.* *It's a small sample size, but he made some nice catches down the field and got open. In fact, if he had played slot the whole year, he might have been our best slot receiver.
