Brady going to classes...

Submitted by w2j2 on
The class was a Department of Afroamerican and African Studies course, and the lecture centered on the impact of British marching music in the Caribbean. That's a far cry from his coursework while a student at Ball State, where he majored in criminal justice and aspired to join the Secret Service. "It was pretty neat, to be honest with ya," Hoke said. "I took notes." Asked how well that worked for him, Hoke smiled wide before saying, "Some of the guys, their eyes got a little big when they saw me." http://www.annarbor.com/sports/um-football/what-does-michigan-football-…

After that he ran a marathon, cured cancer, and fed thousands of poor.

But really, everythingh I read about Hoke makes me love him more and more.  I would kill for a chance to just sit down and talk to him.  Not about football, but about life.  I never got that opportunity with Bo, though I always wanted it, but Hoke seems like such a Bo-incarnate that it would be just as awesome.

Wait till he makes it over to North Campus. Let's see if he still thinks class is "neat" after sitting through thermodynamics!

In all seriousness though, what a likeable guy, and a great leader. I imagine most of the time it's a graduate assistant who checks up on players in class. While it's a small thing, it has to go a long way for both the players and the coaching staff to see the head coach get his hands dirty with the more mundane aspects of the job, and be enthusiastic about it too.

Coach Hoke, I am so happy to admit that I'm wrong about everything I thought when you were hired. You're a heck of a leader and a heck of a football coach. Good luck in NOLA. GEAUX BLEU!

Most likeable coach I've ever heard of.  Would have given my right arm to have a guy like him coach my high school hockey team (although that would have made playing hard).

One mistake made though was reading the comment section to the article.  The MSM has done its job in spinning low APR numbers into a "Michigan football players don't graduate" meme.

Lloyd Brady really is that big...I thought for sure this was a story about him going to class.  I am just glad we don't have a coach with the name facepalm, or we would be really confused.

The class Hoke sat in on sounds more interesting than thermodynamics, calculus, chemistry, physics, etc. Not that those aren't interesting, but they generally don't have a discrete amount of info in a single class period that anyone can sit in on and find intelligible, without a large amount of previously built on material.

I suppose that the only classes that it would make sense to visit would be large lecture hall settings, having material dealing with history, political science, sociology, psychology, etc.

I would even go as far as saying that most undergrad classes in thermodynamics, calc, chem, physics, etc aren't that interesting. Its not until you get into some of the harder materials (some high level undergrad classes and grad school) that things seem to start getting interesting.

And would Hoke participate in class discussion? That would be interesting . . . for Bacon to call on guest Brady Hoke to comment on various situations Hoke might just have insight into.

I remember reading something about coaches not being allowed to contact professors directly and vice versa--they're supposed to go through the NCAA faculty rep--but I can't remember whether that's an NCAA rule or an institutional policy.

Any tax-paying citizen of the State of Michigan can sit in on any classes at a public state university.  Obviously, that is not contacting a professor directly.  Now a coach contacting a professor about a student's grades, that's a no-no.

Nice try though.

I'm bringin a Santa hat to class from now on. If I see Hoke in one of my classes I'm going to put it on him, sit on his lap, and ask for a sugar bowl victory, big ten championship and a win against ohio and sparty

I really like stories like this about coaches and academics.

There was this, at the end:

And the price if any of the football players wouldn't have been there?

"Then they’re up at 6 a.m. the next morning," Hoke said, flashing another smile.

Better count those hours!  Workouts as punishment for missing classes are permissible during the academic year, but must be counted under CARA calculations.  The exact same thing is not permissible during summer months.
