Bowl game DC?

Submitted by DISCUSS Man on

What is the protocol for coordinators leaving?

Given that we haven't had a coordinator poached by a power 5 (in name only in Maryland's case) in a very long time, how does this all work?

Will he have an option to coach the bowl? If so, I say no. Eff that noise.

A Michigan man is going to coach Michigan. Not a Maryland man.

Pack your bags and get the hell out of here.

Neg away. Many people feel the same way.

Magnus, no shit they dont.  However during the Game week, all he had to do was say "Thank you, but my team is playing our biggest rival and for the Big Ten Championship this week, so lets set something up for after the regular season ends to talk"

Maryland would have respected that, hell....they may have even admired that.   A man with dedication to a very important job, who sees it through is more valuable than one that is pursing other opportunities during the most important time of the season.

If Maryland would have passed...no biggie because those in the know on other programs who are looking, would see that Durkin did right by his squad.  That is what its about man.

If he was that concerned, he could have told the press he was contacted by Maryland (or dont even mention Maryland by name), but that you are not talking to anyone until after the OSU game.  THAT would have tossed the ball right in to Maryland's court.  If they had moved on...there is no doubt that other schools would be impressed by Durkin and give him a call too.

"If Maryland would have passed...no biggie"

It's "no biggie" to YOU. You are not the one who is getting potentially a once-in-a-lifetime chance to be a head coach at a Big Ten school. Maybe next year there are no job openings. Maybe the defense at Michigan goes south, he gets fired, he moves to Colorado State-Pueblo, etc.

It's easy to sit here and say, since you're a fan of Michigan, that it's no big deal to pass up a head coaching job so he can concentrate fully on one game. You are not in his shoes.

Very true and insightful. No one turns down a shot at a major job upgrade interview. Moreover, it's very common to take co-workers along for the upgrades that they might get.

I'm a hundred percent sure Harbaugh, who grew up in a coaching family, understands this and encouraged Durkin to go and be interviewed.

Is there any confirmation he actually DID interview the week of the game? Did he miss any practice or film sessions etc. to do that? Did Harbaugh know about it and give it his blessing? Until you know all that, and you don't, you can't call it "stepping out".

Carr spoke at Schembechler's memorial service a few days after the legendary coach passed away. He talked about the time Lou Holtz offered him a job as Notre Dame's defensive coordinator. It looked better and paid better, and Carr thought he should take it.

Bo's response said it all.

"No, you're not going to Notre Dame," Carr said, quoting Schembechler. "You are Michigan, so forget that. I don't want to hear any more about it."

I'd think someone with so many Superguides would know that Bo was pissed because Frieder accepted a lateral move without telling Bo about it before it was a done deal.

Taking a huge promotion is a bit of a different situation - pretty sure Bo and Moeller were on good terms.

Also, Bo wasn't perfect. He could be a hothead and a dick. He wasn't a great AD and he knew it. Obviously Fisher worked out, but can you imagine if he hadn't?

There's no problem with the leaving. The problem is interviewing during rivals week, getting blown out while running a shit scheme, and then trying to poach our staff. Ignoring all that - sure great luck! One might even find DJ's low class exit to be Urban-esq.

there is not a chance he coaches the bowl game. Mattison is the easy choice and not a bad choice
