Borton's take on Hoke - UM/MSU

Submitted by sheepman on

Read this, then read it again. This is about OUR coach. This is wonderful. This is why we LOVE Brady Hoke (as does Borton, obviously).

favorite line "When and if he begins doing it with regularity, he's never mockingly ask "where's the threat," because he knows the threat of a rival rising up will always be there. He has more respect, and less insecurity, than to go there."

didn't find this posted. If it is, read it a third time. It is worth it.

Good read. I find it utterly ironic that Dantonio said that line about "where's the threat" because as I recall, it was him that said "pride comes before the fall" after Hart immortalized the little brother terminology in 2007.....

no one cares about him or moo u.  Thr RCMB is calling for his head.  It wont be long before he leaves for William and Mary.  Dantonio cant contiue to be lucky with all those 3 star recruits.  He is not good enough to coach them up.  He took advantage of rich rod and good for him.

But this year we bitch slap him back to reality, opps there goes gravity.

"He could get into last year, and helmet twisting, arm barring, and 60 minutes of unnecessary roughness. But he won't, any more than he did immediately after that loss."

Nothing subtle about that.

Why?  He didn't "run his mouth" about OSU or the Rose Bowl.  He made fun of a team he owned while he was here.  And he stood up for his program when Harbaugh was running it down.

Now , there is an argument that he shouldn't have done either, but what the hell does it have to do with beating OSU or winning a Rose Bowl?

That's not going to leave too many guys who can say anything. Including Jim Harbaugh.

Of the not really old guys, the 1980, '88, and '97 teams talk. Everyone else STFU.  Strange when you're talking trash to a team that hasn't won a Rose Bowl in 25 years.

Hoke's going about it the right way, obviously. Won't stop me from being nervous until there are zeros on the clock though. Dantonio might be petty, but he's fielded some good football teams the last couple years and they always get up for us.

Are good enough for Sparty. They suck for us, now. But they are a blip in history. Hoke will right this, and Dantonio and the Spartans can puff their chests for a few years. I know it's cocky, but they just won't have what Michigan does. Hoke is right to just get it done on the field. The Sparty pride also comes before the fall.

Michigan is well-coached

Michigan is more talented

Michigan continues to out-recruit MSU by a huge margin

Under these conditions, it would be unprecedented in the history of this rivalry for MSU to continue to dominate as they have the past 4 years.  Dantonio is a solid coach, but he's not Nick Saban.  Their slip back to the middle is inevitable.

That's because he was coaching against the likes of Bobby Williams and John L Smith.  If there was ever an indictment of the futility of MSU football, it's that when Michigan was in something of a slow decline from 2001-2007, it was unable to make up any headway against them.

Take heart fellas, when Michigan is competently coached MSU can only muster a win every 3 or 4 years.  Dantonio's time being smug is up and his slide to a career record under .500 against Michigan starts Saturday.

Myself, I am going to enjoy watching the Spartan faithful slowily turn against their hero when the wins against Michigan become scarce, the possibility of a Rose Bowl appearance become remote and 11 win seasons become a distant memory.  Suddenly, boorish behavior in press conferences and turning a blind eye to player misconduct won't be quite so readily tolerated.

And is still the only one of 3 Michigan coaches to beat Dantonio.

I think you underestimate Dantonio. Jackass tendencies, sure. But he's a good coach. A Saban that could take them to the top of the league? No. But only a truly great like Saban could probably do that...and even he thought "get me the hell out of here." But can he be better than George Perles?  I think so. I don't think he's letting them slide to the levels of a John L., but if we get better we can get it back to where it traditionally has been...winning 2 out of three games like clockwork.  Winning up there is going to be tough for the foreseeable future. And MSU can easily slide into the role Iowa or Wisconsin has carried that when the big boys have down years they can step in and win the conference if things mesh right.

If I had to explain the difference between our coach and theirs to someone completely uninvolved in this rivalry, this would be the article I would send.  Perfect summary

Do I spend 25% of my savings and make the trip from NC to MI this weekend?  I am still on the fence.  The fact that I am yet to get two tickets is kind of a damper on the situation.  I'm thinking of driving up on the 19th in hopes of landing them before game time.  Who knows...

Forgot to mention, the 20th is my birthday and I've never been to Michigan Stadium.

Except for the fact that it could be an awesome revenge / redemption game, I'd say no. Save your money and make the trip next year, early in the season (better weather, more festive atmosphere), against a tomato can (cheap tickets, allowing you to keep more of your nest egg). MSU, though? That makes the decision tricky.

We've decided that if we're going we'll drive.  I have a Lexus and a Honda, so the more fuel efficient Honda will be making the trip.  My only concern is tickets.  Right now, on eBay, nosebleed/corner of the stadium ticket pairs are going for $270-300, would it be possble to get them on game day cheaper?

I'm also considering staying in Canton, and cutting the hotel cost in half.

Love this article.  However, if I'm a head coach in charge of caring for my group of players, I contact the BiG and have them put the refs on notice for Sparty roughness.  Gholston's behavior last year was not just unsportsmanlike, it was criminal.  The head twist could have paralyzed Denard, and the arm bar could have snapped Lewan's arm.  I'm all for taking the high road, but when stuff like that is going down, you have to prepare and respond.

Did Dantonio say this recently, like before this year, or is this something he spouted off in the RR years?  I don't remember this at all.

Throw in the fact that Ohio State isn't eligible for postseason play in 2012, and it might just be the biggest rivalry in the Big Ten right now.

Obviously it was written in the preseason since the "biggest rivalry in the Big Ten" is now buried on the BTN.

Pride comes before the fall, I guess.

I just want a win... No trash talk, just a win since that speaks way more than any trash talk could. I'd love a blowout win but I'll talk what I can get :)
