Board Poll: Predict MSU Fallout

Submitted by UNCWolverine on

A. Bridges will play out the rest of the season. Izzo will claim, “Yahoo said they were done, but we weren’t finished yet”. Business as usual in EL, nothing to see here.

B. MSU will sit Bridges for the rest of the year.

C. Emmert will sit all players named in order to avoid having this news overshadow March Madness.

D. Other, please show your work

I could actually see C happen. History indicates that the NCAA comes down much harder on individual players while protecting cash cow programs and coaches. Imagine the firestorm if teams implicated (Bridges/MSU, Carter/Dook, etc.) make deep tournament runs. It seems like it would be in Emmert’s best interest to avoid that by sitting these players immediately.

What say you?

to investigate and clean house--and insists that Bridges sit while under investigation. At the end of the season he quietly encourages Izzo to retire.

It will just be another brick in the MSMoo wall.  Hopefully, the cumulative effect of all the "MSU in the headlines for all the wrong reasons" will eventually take its toll, just won't happen this BB season.

It will be fun, however, to watch Izzo try to dodge even more incoming missiles.

claim to have no knowledge of any transaction or transgressions and get off scott-free.  The NCAA will never bite the hand that feeds.

They won't punish the big boy because that would harm the cash cow of the tournament, regardless of it being this year or next.

IF the FBI can trace $$ and deals back to coaches like the Pitino stuff, then maybe a coach gets fired, but the NCAA won't be uncovering anything.

Nothing's going to happen unless they can definitively prove Izzo or Bridges had direct knowledge of it happening. And I doubt they'll be able to prove that.

Think Cam Newton. His dad was whoring him out to other schools but Cam allegedly didn't have any knowledge of it, so he wasn't going to get punished for it.

This finally brings an end to the NCAA and its farcical belief in "Amateurism".

But, probably A.  MSU won't have to vacate any National Championships though, Izzo and his turnover machine are ripe for an early exit from both upcoming tournaments.

Lol. C’mon people. The wagons are circles. Time to watch a bunch of grown men who have cheated try and “play dumb”.

Well, C can't happen, as Emmert (the NCAA) has no authority whatever to do that.

B wouldn't happen in a million years.

So I guess that leaves A or D. And let's be honest, the information we have about Bridges so far is a non-starter, so A, unless something more comes out.

D. Other. State will sit Bridges for the BTT. He will play in the NCAA tournament.

That way they have hedged against any penalty. If an NCAA investigation confirms what has been reported, they have already self-imposed sanction. State is acting reasonably and out of an abundance of caution, etc.

If State does nothing, Bridges goes pro, and State has a larger risk of serious sanctions.

Doubt Sparty will do anything, but I think it's likely the NCAA and/or the B1G will suspend all named players until investigation is finished.  They really, really don't want this to be Lousiville nationwide.

People's hatred for MSU does not allow for clear thinking. The NCAA will not do anything of note. They may adjust some minor rules going forward and call it a day. First, this is not about MSU. Bridges seems to be the smallest matter here by monetary terms. Do people really think college basketball will come down hard on Coach K? Let alone Izzo and the other coaches? Has anyone noticed Sean Miller coaching on the sidelines for Arizona this year? We have to think "systems" here. The system is overseen by the NCAA. If the system doesn't work whose fault is that? It surely should not be placed at the feet of a few players, or parents accepting less than $1,000 in some cases. We have seen that institutions and organizations (again MSU) do not want to investigate themselvess. Coming down hard on these programs would cause a huge amount of backlash and lead to close scrutiney of the NCAA.

I could be wrong, but we should focus less on Bridges (who could be a millionaire today, not a $400aire) and think about what will mean to amateur basketball. My bet is that the NCAA would rather not go down that road.

will be spending weeks working on his (insert platitude here) narrative going in to the tournament.

Coach K, Izzo....all the "good guys" and all that "is right" about college bball, etc, etc...He will need to rewrite his usual script.

Looking for the real deal Dickie V?  Nobody does it with more class or integrity than John Beilein.

Bridges sits out a game or two but is reinstated before the tournament.  Izzo retires after the season and gets angry at the suggestion that it was related the scandals, insisting that he planned it all along.  MSU fans actually disagree with this, arguing that the Great ESPN/Yahoo!/lAlternative Media Conspiracy drove the poor man to a premature retirement.  They call for a statue of him to be put up outside Breslin.  President Engler is receptive to the idea but there is a faculty backlash...

I would say that they go on like business as usual. They get through the NCAA Tournament and sweep this under the rug during the off-season (nice and quiet-like).  Face it, there are just too many big time players and programs (both past and present) to start imposing any sanctions right now, if at all. At this point, I don't believe  anyone can make this right. Id say, the NCAA is guilty of a lack of institutional oversight and/or control because they allowed this cancer to grow like it has.Seems like they would have to invalidate wins for teams going back 10 years at least and that means they would have to strip away National Championships from 8 of the last 10 years. Everyone knew it was going on and my guess is, they will probably take a page out of  DT's book and hope that something else more newsworthy happens and draws everyones attention elsewhere, so they dont have to do anything about it.

Commentators will get the memo not to talk about it during the tournament and like most things in politics no one will even know it happened. I know that some say, the Justice Department will come down hard but my guess is that the NCAA, these cash cow programs and their rich alumni will come together and force the feds to do whatever they are going to do, nice and quietly, and without harming the good name of programs like a Duke University etc. Face it, the institution of big-time college basketball is way too powerful. unlike professional sports, there are 100's of college teams not 10-20 teams and it will be damn-near impossible to apportion sanctions for all of the violations, so they will sweep it under the rug and not much will come of this except some kid's mom will become the poster child for scandal because someone bought her dinner.

Caveat,

If one or two of the big time programs start self imposing sanctions, then they all start falling like dominos.

Everyone seems to have missed the fact that in the ledger, the payment to Bridges mom is listed as an "advance." No one is asking the obvious question - advance on what?

Having said that, if Bridges gets suspended, it's for the rest of the season as state can't justify a small suspension before all the facts are out.

So, Spartans Will - do nothing, and business as usual in EL.

On local radio they are saying that because it’s simply an entry in someone’s expense account and you can’t prove bridges mother took money he will get off Scott free. My question is how did they prove Weber and others got money from at Martin other than his testimony?

Shame on Yahoo Sports. They just put themselves down there with ESPN. They should know better than to sensationalize anything negative about Sparty Nation. Just another witch hunt. Just ask any Sparty loyalists.

Hope for real justice for NCAA basketball violations. The penalties, if you want to call them that, do NOTHING to discourage cheating. Unless the NCAA miraculously grows some balls overnight, we're just going to continue seeing the unbridled cheating going on until programs get nuked or coaches go to jail. And that won't happen as long as the NCAA money machine continues to control college basketball.

Due to all that has occurred, Izzo will step down as MSU's Men's Basketball Coach but will be named the new AD. Tom Crean or Dane Fife will take his place and Sparty will act like nothing wrong ever happened.

Been a while since I've been in the car while his show is on the air, and heard him twice this week (including today) have to say I'm kind of shocked!  I expected him to go full on in defense of MSU and he has NOT, in fact he is not shying away from saying there is an institutional problem, with multiple investigations, tone deaf PR responses, and it's not the fault of the media.. or the FBI.  I thought Huge was a dyed in the wool Sparty.

Apparently he's one of the Spartans who would rather confront the issues openly and clean things up.

I read your post, I thought the same thing. Our football program had to face penalties because of extra practice time...seriously, while some programs would make the Russian Mob gasp.

Unless the feds have wire taps I doubt anything comes of this. Imagine if that were Michigan. They’d be made an example of. Sounds like NCAA is dirty from top to bottom. Same ole song and dance. We all have a prettty good idea which teams practice this. Too much money at stake to weed the cheaters out. It’s ruining college sports.

Izzo just came out and said:

“We are aware of the report in Yahoo! Sports. While we will cooperate with any and all investigations, we have no reason to believe that I, any member of our staff or student-athlete did anything in violation of NCAA rules.”

After all their coach named his kid after an accused rapist... do you think he is concerned with a players mom getting treated with $400 so she could go to Macy's. That whole institution is going balls deep with denials.
