This Board Has Become Unbearably Negative...

There. Now lighten the fuck up. Things will be OK*

*Unless UM football has become the college version of the Detroit Lions. Then things will never be OK again.

Now I know why old alums sit on their hands at the Big House.  Michigan hasn't been relevant since Ole Granny was suckin' dick back in her Stockwell days.

I've largely stayed away from the boards after Ohio State, but that's more to do with my depression about the program and my depression about having depression about a college football team.

I think that negativity and pessimism--if not part of some larger health issue--are largely a choice. But these last few weeks have been brutal. Honestly, even recruiting victories feel hollow after the Ohio State disaster.

The false premises of the "unacceptable"/sky is falling crowd are numerous. And in starting from those premises, actual quality discussion on the program is rendered impossible.

It goes like this: facts brought up which evidence obvious improvement and a positive direction, enter a blatantly negative response based on one of the false premises below.

After a while, people who are capable of recognizing obvious positive results AND understanding there are mountains to climb, become frustrated and denounce the board as having gone to the troll trash heap.

In no exact order of rank of regularity, the false premises:

--People who are positive about where this program is at versus where it was 5 years ago are ill informed

--People who are positive about where this program is at versus where it was 5 years ago are satisfied being "mediocre"

--That Michigan is currently a mediocre program which has hit a ceiling of (insert record)

--That fans who approve of where the program is at this point are letting Harbaugh off the hook by not demanding more

--Since Harbaugh apparently can only attain quality wins by beating a playoff team, any wins (no matter how dominant) against teams which are less than that do not evidence improvement

--Our expectations as fans are paramount. And when they are not met, nuanced discussion of reality is the act of an apologist

I've got to give some people here some advice:

(1) Go back to RCMB or Bucknuts.

For the real Michigan fans I have some other advice:

(1) It's OK to be upset, and we all know the reasons already, but it's not OK to try to make others miserable just because you are. It's a bad character trait that will have a destructive influence on your life in general.

(2) Don't mix up how Michigan football is doing with how *you* are doing. Michigan losing a game, heck, Michigan losing 14 out of 15 doesn't have crap to do with *your* life. If you feel like it does, take a step back and re-focus your life.

This board does seem to have a lot of pathetic Eeyores, with low confidence, sour attitudes, and the mindset of losers.  Fortunately, there are still Wolverines around, but the Eeyores sure are embarrassing.

The Buddha gave us the 4 Noble Truths.

The First Truth states that all life is suffering.

The Second Truth states that the root cause of all suffering is desire and ignorance.

Michigan fans desire Michigan to be an elite program, but it's our ignorance that really has (many) Michigan fans suffering.  When you read a negative post it is full of judgment, full of "should's and shouldn't's" and negative prognostications, and a dearth (ha ha, go it right this time) of acceptance of the reality of the situation.

I've loved all things Michigan since I can first remember thinking conscious thought.  But, my fellow Michigan Men and Women, Michigan has only been an "elite" program for couple of seasons in my 42 years of fandom.  If you're ignorant of that fact, then you're going to be miserable and suffer continually.  Now, CAN Michigan be elite?  Yes, it can be.  But, suffering because it's not yet is foolish.

Unfortunately, or fortunately depending on your perspective, one of the rare few "elite" programs is in our division, and will most likely be in the way of Michigan becoming elite.  Michigan's task is mighty, because the mountain is high.  But the suffering many fans are experiencing (and, due to their incessant complaining, make other experience) is because they remain (willfully?) ignorant of the actual HEIGHT of the mountain.

Further, this notion that if Michigan we to just change coaches (again) it will FINALLY be elite.  Perhaps.  But, perhaps not.  Perhaps it will (again) find itself back in the base of the mountain rather than actually having a CHANCE to attain the summit.  Does it suck to slide off the peak when so close?  Absolutely it does -- that is the suffering of a fan.  But we don't need to suffer because we're not where we've only every been a few time since leather helmet days.  We need to encourage and applaud those coaches and players giving everything they have to attain the summit.

I am not saying they're infallible -- they're human.  But, my friends, do NOT remain ignorant and suffer.  Understand the enormity of the task, and let go of this notion that we should have already attained the summit.  If we should have, we would have.  It cannot be forces or coerced, any more than recruits can be.  Three of four seasons with 10 wins for the first time since 1997-2000 ... THAT is progress.

Everyone here settles for being mediocre. There’s no crying in football. If we’re not beating OSU 50% of the time and playing for big ten titles, then why the fuck bother. End of story.

End of story?  Not in the least, unless you’re a childish fool.  How are we settling for mediocrity?  What does “not settling” look like?  Does it involve whining about your snowflake feelings on a message board, by chance?

Which teams beat OSU 50% of the time?  Which teams beat Alabama 50% of the time?  Clemson?  Oklahoma?

Should every team that can’t do what you prescribe take your, “why even bother?!” attitude.  You proved my point perfectly.  Doing what you want done is difficult, so difficult, in fact, that nobody in the last 10 years has been able to accomplished it.  Should everyone just disband their programs?

You’re displaying the “all or nothing” attitude that has infected our culture.  10-2 is not “mediocre”.  How many programs of the 127 D1 CFB programs won 10 games?  How many have won 10 games in 3 of the last 4 years?

You’re the problem.

Losers quit.  They can't take it.  They are weak and have low morale.  They give up and thus remain losers.

Winners keep at it until they win.  They maintain high morale.  They move forward.

If you are a Wolverine, don't be a weak, embarrassing defeatist.  Man up and get some morale.
