BIG Defensive Player of the Week: LB Mike McCray!
The #B1G Defensive Player of the Week is @UMichFootball LB Mike McCray, who had 3.5 TFL & 1 FF against Hawaii
Couldn't be happier for the guy after all of his injuries! He set the bar high for himself in his first start...

Really anxious to see how he scores out in the UFR; he could very well have been the best linebacker on the roster last year.

9 tackles (3 1/2 for a loss), 2 sacks and one forced fumble.
Considering he hardly got on the field since he got here, kept having to look at my roster. Who's this #9? Oh. Of course. Grant Perry.
He was zipping around so un-LB-like, looked so slender, I forgot we were on defense. Add another great feel-good story.

with Woodson and Jeter both at +2.

There was a lot of competition for this honor, just on M's defensive line alone. Way to go, McCray! That's the Harbaugh Effect -- always compete.

Don Brown effect too, I don't really remember this relentless attacking defense last year. Really a breath of fresh air.

I had the same thought. I always figured we'd be startstruck by Gary, who played well and his big days will come sooner than later, but post-Saturday, lots of talk about Evans and McCray and Bredeson. Very pleasant surprises.
It's so good to have tremendous coaching talent capable of taking good recruits and finding ways to quickly use their skills.

He looked great in the game, hope he keeps it up all year. Strong play from the linebackers will make this great defense even better.

Do schools nominate their players each week or does the B1G choose among everyone?

was to his shoulder, so his legs should be fine.

for McCray and he was really good on saturday, but I think Delano Hill had the best game and not just because the pick six. I was honestly in shock at how well he played, I hope he can keep it up against better competition.

I think I ton of that was on the DL. In the plays the linebackers made, they basically never had to take on a block. DL kept them squeaky clean all day. LBs played great too, but when the DL is faced with a better OL we'll see if they can still fill the gaps when they are taking on blocks.

This was an awesome opportunity to gain confidence and play composed. McCray was awesome, flying to the ball with purpose. Very happy to see a great game from a kid who has certainly seen his up's and down's from within our program.

That honor went to Anthony Nelson, Iowa DE. He had 6 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and forced 2 fumbles. Not too shabby, I guess, but I'm a homer.
Anyway, congrats to Mike McCray.

...downright slender on the field. 300 pound man, 6'5'' and I thought he was a DB at one point.

Thought the same....how can he really be that big?!?

was he a 3 star? Or did the anouncers just get that wrong? His vision was very encouraging, even if he could have driven a zamboni through some of those holes.

If I remember his recruiting profile correctly, there was a pretty high variance in his ranking across the big sites. I think he was listed as a 4* on one site, and a 3* everywhere else.

has definitely paid his dues, worked hard and perservered for this.

I think he earned the right to be called that after this weekend. This LB core looks like it could top out way above average, which I thought was their ceiling just a few days ago.

Im not saying teams are going to run up and down the field against us, cause I think we have a very good defense. Just saying, we are going to be a tough unit to score a TD on. Its almost impossible to aviod a sustained drive at least a few times a game, but i was just implying our ability to keep teams out of the endzone, I think is going to be key for us and our biggest strength. Big difference in giving up 3 instead of 7

This defense is set up to be stingy about the run and provide lots of pressure - but - it is vulnerable to the big play. A quick pass offense could see some significant gains against this setup and a broken tackle is costly when so many are blitzing.
