"Big 10 Refs are bad and they should feel bad" (Basketball Edition)

Submitted by JWG Wolverine on

All I have to say has been said in the title.

Wow.

Sorry your potentially awesome game was painfully taken away from you, Ace. On behalf of the MGoBlog community, we hope you'll feel better soon.

WD has become greater than just a single person. WD is an idea. WD is that mischievous little pixie that lives inside all of us, yearning to create havoc wherever it goes. WD is a modern day warrior. Catch the mist, catch the myth, catch the mystery, catch the drift.

No shot clock on. There is no way we should have lost that game in regulation. I thought Matthews started his drive way too soon. The refs were terrible at the end of this game though.

On the bright side, our team is legit and will be good for a few years with all these youngs guys (Livers, Poole, Z, Brooks, Teske).

Ok. Back to raging. FUCK THE BIG TEN. GO CHOKE ON SOME BUCKEYES DELANEY.

must have been at the game.  Was probably breathing too hard for the refs / Delaney's liking.

This is getting quite absurd.

Leave the fucking conference.  Fuck em.

That play where the possessor has the ball on his hand and it gets slapped away happens 7-10 times a game and it's never called like that. It always touches the possessor's hand last because that's just physics. That call was not within the spirit of the rule. Oh, and 3 absolute horseshit calls against Wagner tonight.

I always wondered why they never call it this way because it is actually touching the possessing player last -- like you said, phsyics -- but totally agree it makes no sense to all of a sudden switch how you call this in the biggest possession of the game.

And the calls against Wagner were terrible but to decide the game with an overturned call like that is just the worst. This is supposed to be fun -- let the players decide the game on the court!

Tough last possession, with a timeout in hand. 4 seconds, inbounding at half court, is plenty of time to set up a shot. Great effort tonight.

because 1) it forces you to make a pass to get the ball in play (which we're usually terrible at) and 2) it's better for the defense to be able to regroup and figure out their strategy than for the offense which should know all it's plays already and can call them as they please.

Matthews went a little early, Mathias made a good play on it, but that call stands without an argument any other time of the game.

If offensively we already knew our play, we failed miserably at executing it.  Down by one, lofting a half court, hailmary isn't a play.

I agree we suck at inbounding, but I also think 4 seconds is enough time to get a better look than what we ended up taking.

I have never seen such a ticky tack foul called in that situation.  Just bizarre, especially for the home team to get boned like that.  The NCAA should take some pride in its product and hire some full time, professional referees, because the amateurs they use now are ruining both major sports.

They shouldn't but sometimes they make the call anyway. When we played #1 ranked Arizona at Crisler in 2013, the game was tied in the final seconds and Mitch Mcgary got called for the foul even though he made no contact with the Wildcat player. Arizona shot the game winning free throws with 1 second left in the game. We've fallen victim to this before. Sometimes the refs just don't give a shit.

For as much people complain about football replay, basketball’s is much worse. They get it wrong just about as often as they do right. Which is hard using hindsight.

I've never seen that strip out of bounds go to the team that stripped the ball unless it goes off a knee or leg. Never. That happens 20 times a game and it never goes to the team that stripped it. It's either a foul our out of bounds on the strip team. What was that call? How did belein not lose his mind? I would have gone George Brett with the pine tar. I would still be sitting cross legged at half court right now. This was very shady officiating and that's become a trend in many sports. This isn't fun anymore.

As a certified basketball official, I can say replay sucks and the reversal call on Matthews was horrible. Instant replay takes away the speed of the game and importance for refs to do their job. Show that play to any person at game speed it is UM ball. That one kid from Purdue who kept hitting threes kept pushing off screens that could’ve been called, then with no indisputible evidence they overturned the possession to Purdue's. That hook foul was a tricky tack foul that was a correct call to make, but still they were awful.
