"Big 10 Refs are bad and they should feel bad" (Basketball Edition)

Submitted by JWG Wolverine on

All I have to say has been said in the title.

Wow.

Sorry your potentially awesome game was painfully taken away from you, Ace. On behalf of the MGoBlog community, we hope you'll feel better soon.

Refs suck, but it's not a coin flip situation where we get jobbed 50% of the time and lucky the other half.

We just seem to get fucked by Delaney's henchmen.

are approaching TV Ted levels. He has that piece of paper for a first down check in the NFL a few weeks back and then tonight, spends an eternity looking for any reason to give it to Purdue and comes over to the announcers table with “2 frames”??

Ace deserved better, Gene.

At some point, the tables have got to turn. Pay the refs, leave the conference, fucking something. We never get a 50/50 call in pivotal situations. Ever. Fucking ever. I want to break something.

How about all the ticky tack fouls on Wagner? He gets hosed more than any other M player I can remember. Also, props to Dakich for keeping it real in the booth.

Everyone focuses on the spot. How about 0 holding calls in regulation and 2 OTs on an Oline getting their asses handed to them. And the obvious Pass Interference discrepancies. But everyone talks about the spot. Everyone will remember a replay review that took longer than the 2nd half. Mo got screwed and ended up in foul trouble on a play that was a clean forced turnover early in the half. Teske saved our asses and played great minutes in relief. We get tripped/wiped out by several of their screens but a touch call on one of our screens, total BS. The slightest contact with a forearm, I’ve seen so much more contact let go. WTF.

Enough is enough. Preferably, Warde. I get we don't want a Dave Brandon showboat, but I didn't ask for this yes man shadowy figure either. He needs to speak up for his program that keeps getting screwed in both sports. Other Big Ten schools will most likely follow. It needs to be addressed.

I don't know, but sometimes there are guys that people know not to F*@% with, and Hackett seemed to be that guy. Warde seems a little more passive. Of course I have no real knowledge, this is just people watching and hearing how they talk and carry themselves. No knock on Warde (who I think is a good AD) but Hackett had a bad ass approach. Maybe it's cause he got us Nike and Harbaugh back in less than a year so I view him as such.

There’s no way Warde is going to change something that’s so systemic it happens in your face all the time. This argument is idiotic in nature. You’re spouting off bullshit as if you know what Warde says or does daily! You’re a blowhard on a message board thinking that your opinion on our current AD, will change refereeing. I️m here to tell you it won’t! The Capron crew that stole our game in 2016, just refereed the College Football National Championship game last night. And guess what? It was not by accident! Get a grip!

I️ am pissed as much as the next Michigan fan but if you’re gonna just keep spouting off crap, it won’t change a thing! Yes to you Hackett was, Clint Eastwood! We get it! So Warde is just a regular Michael Oher! He’s so soft, he allows us to get screwed without consent, on purpose! Very productive conversation and it’ll change the outcome really, really soon!

Propose change to the current system. Get them to stop counting their billions and use some of that money to hire full-time refs. Implement a system where they get penalized for bad calls. It's not difficult. Things will continue if no one brings up the issue though.

Refs do get judged and critiqued on their performances, least at the high school level. If you get even a negative reputation you're black balled from the competative, important games and conferences. You could get fired and never be asked to ref varsity games if you get enough complaints from people and fellow refs. I don't know why college football and basketball don't hold their refs and officlas more accountable for their performaces. Something needs to change.

agree. go in there and say listen we make the most money in this conference and if this shit keeps happening then we are leaving the big ten. throw your weight around. Brandon got abused by the other ADs (possibly deserved), but Warde was supposed to fix shit. instead we still have a messed up conference schedule heading into year 4 and we let ND get the first home game after screwing us in the last contract. look at what Texas did to the big twelve when they started their own network. As the premier money making program we need to make demands.

WTF - we all know it happens in football, but now in basketball ?  That was absolutely the most pathetic example of giving one team the victory I have ever witnessed.  6 seconds - our ball.  If JB doesn't call timeout they don't review that play - and not one replay gave 100% proof - so the play is suppose to stand. But fuck no - not if you want Michigan to lose.

Just fuck the B1G !!

While the two calls at the end were technically right, they were far from obvious and pretty unlikely Purdue gets both most of the time. More worrisome is that throughout the game every single bad call, besides maybe 1, went in Purdue's favor, some of them big swings.

Refs handed Boilermakers the game. Right up there with the bball game at Minnesota last season. Or even OSU 2016 football.

The out of bounds call was not technically right unless were completely reinterpreting the rule.  EVERY time a ball gets slapped out of a player's hand, it's going to touch his hand last.  It's common sense.  Taking five minutes to magnify the play and review it from every angle to see whose fingernail touched it last is not how the rule is called in any other situation. It's a joke.

In a vacuum at super slow-motion you might be right.  Watch any game and neither call gets made ever.

Look at the game right before Michigan.  Kentucky's player totally grabbed the A&M player on the final play without a call.  Refs always let a little more contact go at the end and generally favor the home team at least slightly.  The out-of-bounds play comes down to physics also - Purdue slapped the ball out of his hand and a millisecond later is not the correct judgment of that play.

Being a ref is hard.  Basketball 50-50 calls are impossible.  Usually they even out over the course of a game.  In this case every single 50-50 call went to Purdue.  Every call on Wagner was light.  The phantom moving screen on Teske.  No calls on any of their screens to free up their shooters.

Just crap.  Simple change - replay gets shown for 60 seconds and if they haven't decided by then it defaults to the on-court call.

What a fucking screw job. Purdue player swipes at the ball and it goes out of bounds, but the refs neither call a foul nor call it out on Purdue. Apparently, they think Matthews threw it out of bounds voluntarily. Worse yet, they hold up the game for 10 minutes on a play that wouldn't even get reviewed at any other point in the game. What a joke.

Tough one.  I am still waiting for us to get some home cooking calls from the refs one of these days.  In the meantime we will see the same crap on Saturday in East Lansing.

WHAT A FUCKING BONE JOB BY BIG TEN OFFICALS. That poke out was a reach in foul as he got the arm and not the hand. FUCKING BAD CALL with an insult via the delayed replay. BONED.
