"Better Son/Daughter" poll

Submitted by shorts on

OK, so I'm the one who made the video last year. This one (I've forgotten how to embed):

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IV-xZZay9E

I just finished a horiffically busy All-Star week here in Phoenix (as some of you know, I work for a major sports media organization here), so I just got a chance to see the thread asking about the 2011 hype video.

My plan was to change it up this year -- since the RichRod era is done and gone, I was thinking it'd be a good time for a new song, something fresh to signal a change and new philosophy and whatnot. But before I start working on something, let's take an informal poll.

Should there be another "Better Son/Daughter" hype video this year, for tradition's sake?

I don't feel like setting up a Survey Monkey or anything, so let's just take it here in this thread. Yes or no? And if no, do you have any particular suggestions for a song for this year's hype video? I have a song in mind but am not totally sure it's the right one.

UPDATE: After about 100 comments, my rough count has things at about 60-40 in favor of a new song. So ... that's pretty close. Maybe I can find time to do one of each. And thanks for the song suggestions -- there are some pretty good options there, and I've still gotta listen to a few of them. Feel free to keep those coming.

Yes you should absolutely do another. We're coming off yet another letdown of a season, which means the context for the song is more than appropriate. Not only has it become tradition, but the song works perfectly with out "Srsly, this is the time for our comeback" mentality approaching the season (particularly with the growing pains we're going through...again). And it keeps us above the garbage mainstream rap hype videos.

I vote for change. I do like the slow buildup of the song, but the first half of the song is just too melancholy and depressing. It worked when we had so many JV moments on the field, but frankly I don't want to be reminded of those times.  And I agree, the song reminds me too much of the RR era.

In addition to music, I would like to see soundbites be incorporated into hype videos. It would be great to hear bits of Bo's legendary speeches or the way Hoke or Brandon talk about the program with such passion. That shit gets me hyped and excited more than any one song.

Every time I hear the song in that video, it causes me to picture two unattractive lesbians doing 69 at a Lillith Fair concert. Pretty much the polar opposite of Michigan football.

Anyone voting in favor of that song in another Michigan hype video is immediately placed under extreme suspicion.

If you make a new one, try to make one sort of like this. Great song to choose, soft beginning and then speeds up. It's also incredibly well put together, with the highlights all over the stadium. It looks like it was professionaly done, not crappily done in 5 minutes on the internet. If you can do better than this, cudos to you, because this is the best one I've seen in a while.

The beginning is impressive -- I'm not sure I have quite the editing chops to pull off something like that beginning montage (was that part of an ESPN production?).

Other than the musical style and the weird seizure I went into at the 1-minute mark, tha's pretty impressive. I'll see if I can top it.

I posted this in the other thread, but it obviously applies here too: Love Rilo Kiley. I remember seeing this hype video last year and thinking it may have been the best I've ever seen, just for pure creativity points. Please keep the tradition going.

Won't prescribe a specific solution as that's best left in your able hands.

Appreciate your efforts.  Can't wait to see what you come up with this year.

Rilo kiley and BSBD is the anthem for the RR years. We need something with a lot of pep, finger pointing and just all around bad assness.

<br>I was thinking something that would be a hulk hogan intro back in the WWF wrestling days. Maybe "TNT".

I think I'm with the (albeit small) majority here in saying that its time to retire the song.  It was excellent in 2009, but had diminishing returns last year, and I think the trend would continue this year.

If you want a song with an emotional Pay-out, I think "Wet Sand" by the RHCP is a very fitting song which speaks to our school's traditions / requirements for a program being bizarre &unique, but owning up to that (i.e. "You don't form in the wet sand, I do").  The lyrics are very abstract (as most RHCP lyrics tend to be), but the song really seems like it could fit this year.

It also has the added benefit of 1/2 of theband being born in Michigan (Anthony K. and Chadd Smith both from Grand Rapids and are said to be huge Michigan fans.  Rumor has it that they even played the intro to the Michigan fight song in Columbus and were banned from Radio play for some time).

Based on your work for the 2010 UM Football hype video, I'd expect that whatever you put together probably will be excellent, but considering that the 2010 season brought more highlights than the 2009 season, I'd vote for this if you decide to extend the length of the video.

....video in previous years.  But, I vote against it just because I think it has run its course and it will always remind me of the ups and downs of a transition to a new system.  It was about RichRod struggling to becoming a "better son" so to speak.

This year is more a "coming home" to the old system to me.  (But, I would think the new song should also keep the tempo swing).  Maybe a "break up song" that swings from sadness about the past to hope with the new "love interest"?

Anyway, here are some half-joking suggestions:

Fugazi - Waiting Room  (given our patience)

Anything that incorporates clips from the Muppet Show song (obvious)

Anything by the Pointer Sisters (with clips of Hoke pointing)

"Elderly Woman Behind a Counter" - Pearl Jam (for the folks who are happy to see Hoke's familiar face)

P.S. - I can't recommend anything serious because of my fear of hipster douches "moderating" me for recommending a song beneath their "taste level."

Spent the first bit musing about how "Isn't that the ESPN homage?" then suddenly at 1:03, EPILEPSY.

Edit: and this reply did not go where I thought it would.  In reference to the video France719 posted

Make a new video, there's no such thing as too many hype videos.

But I'd change the song and how it's put together. No more black and white of us being crapped on in the beginning, I find it hard to get pumped when I just see us getting destroyed. Also, try to keep the amount of games where the score is like 35-10 us losing out of it, I find it hard to get pumped when I see a score like that.

As for a song, I love this song to get me pumped, but I have no idea how it would work in a video.

I vote new song.

HOWEVA, if you do Rilo Kelley again PLEASE (!!!) give credit to Tim and MGoBlog for the original since he was the one who did the 2009 version and Brian was the one who came up with the song.  It was basically their creative production and I think they deserve credit on any reproductions.

I'm leaning towards a new song.  I really like the idea of that Florence and the Machine song, another one I think would work well would be Mumford and Sons' The Cave.

(no, not the bob seeger song). I think it is time to turn the page on Rilo Kiley. New era calls for something new. Plus, another Better Son or Daughter Video would have the awkward juxtaposition between all the crappy things taking place in the second half of the year, and followed by the good things that all happened in the first half of the year. It would be dissonant at best, depressing at worst.

Were the Godfather I and II of hype videos. My theory is new song, as you will never make it as good as the first, so something different can only hope to pay homage to the groundwork laid by the first 2 and be special and great in a new way.

Also re: embedding, for some reason videos can't be embedded into the topic post, only to the replies.

I am a big fan of Rilo Kiley but wouldn't mind a new tune every year. Sticking with the indie theme, here are some ideas:

Radiohead - Jigsaw Falling Into Place

Arcade Fire - Ready to Start

The Wrens - Faster Gun

Is Kanye's Power too played out? Probably... but still a sweet song.

I agree that rap songs are not always the best, but this one from last year was pretty cool. Just kind of fits with what Michigan is doing, the past is the past. It's the start of new things.

Wait there was a brighter day

Where I could view the world

Without the sorrows that I've known

(What if I could feel?)

Now it's a different place

Memories fade away without a trace

But there's a shadow

A shadow I can feel

My eyes are closing softly

(I never wanted to be)

Inside these walls I fade away

(I never wanted to be)

Still holding on 'cause this is

Far from over

I won't say goodnight

My heart's grown colder

Waiting for the sun to rise again

Crawling closer

So save your kiss goodbye

It's far from over

I won't fear anymore

Wait I know it's not too late

Even though the innocence is scarred

There's still tomorrow

(What if I could feel?)

I could just escape

Close my eyes and dream about

A sentimental vision

A vision I could feel

This time I won't go softly

(I never wanted to be)

Refuse to simply fade away

(I never wanted to be)

Still holding on 'cause this is

Far from over

I won't say goodnight

My heart's grown colder

Waiting for the sun to rise again

If you were to change the song I suggest "God Moving Over The Face Of The Waters" by Moby.  It was the song that was playing at the end of Heat when Pacino shot DeNiro and it's EPIC:

New song.  Perfect Son/Daughter was a great idea and I trust to judgment to come up with something equally awesome for this year.
