Best stories of meeting UofM personalities

Submitted by UMdad on
In response to the car accident story from yesterday, I was wondering what good stories people have of meeting some of the schools big names. I was golfing at the U course one time and the group ahead of us was Bo, Lloyd, Brandstatter and an old player (don't remember his name, but he was in his 70's) The play was slow that day and I had a chance to talk with them at almost every hole. All I kept praying for was a hole in one so I could have those three sign my card as witnesses. Note: all three were pretty big hitters, and the funniest moment was when Brandstatter was talking during Bo's drive and he yelled at him, "Damn it Jim, your mouth is as big as your ass!" I laughed for two holes.

I work at a certain UM museum which had a huge gala for its reopening and got to give Mary Sue a tour of the museum store. She was probably the nicest customer I've ever had, and was genuinely interested in the stuff I was saying. Also, being a freshman girl in Markley last year, I met Mike Cox and Kenny Demens... and so did the rest of my hall, even though my roommate and I were the only ones who knew who they were.

My fiance's dad told me this story the other day. He had a paper route with his cousin in 1969. One of the guys on his was Jim Young(was it Jim, i don't remember his first name for sure) the defensive coordinater under Bo. anyways, Mr. Young asked him what he wanted for christmas. Being a quick thinker, he responded, how about tickets to the Rose Bowl?(remember that this was the year of the epic upset of OSU) Mr. Young says, "I'll see what I can do" A week later, he calls him back and lets him know that he had a couple tickets for him...on the 50 yard line....20 rows up. So yeah, his paper boy christmas tip was two outstanding tickets for the 69 rosebowl.

I met C Webb at a basketball camp I went to the summer of the olympics when Laettner made the team and he didn't. The Camp of Champs and he came and spoke to us and starting pulling random kids out of the crowd for various competitions. He pulled a buddy of mine to for a best of ten free throw shoot out and lost. My buddy still loves telling the story. Anyway, he signed my jersey and upon arriving home my brother dragged me off to play some three on three with some friends so my bag sat in the laundry room and when my mom gets home she does what moms do and washes the laundry. I can still see the autograph but it is an extremely light pink as opposed to a bright red. In addition, during the Q&A at the camp someone asked him if he was upset that Laettner made the team instead of him(this is the reason I remember this) and he said no way. He went on to point out the Laettner was now wearing the shoes the Fab5 did(Air Huarache) http://www.kicksguide.com/images/Nike/huarache/huarache_rear2.jpg and had recently pierced his ear and made a bad joke about Laettner trying to be him.

but my dad has had a couple of sports-related happenings. One story he has is that he was on a business trip and he was boarding the plane. He finds his seat and it just so happens to be right next to Bo Schembechler. I guess he and Bo talked for the whole plane ride and my dad got a signature at the end to bring home. I believe he gave it to my brother (Son of A Bitch!) and it's framed in my bro's room. My dad also met Bo Jackson one time a while back. Bo was retired at this point, I think, and I guess Bo was kind of a dick. My dad said that Bo went to this bar every night and just sat and drank all night then left. He got kind of annoyed by people that bugged him, but my dad said "hey." EDIT: For me personally, I haven't had too much. I did go to the Rose Bowl game against Texas a few years ago, and while I was there me and my brother met Chad Henne's younger brother. We sat in a hot tub with him for a good hour to find out that Chad and Braylon Edwards were just at the hotel and in the hot tub 10 minutes before we got there. I was kind of pissed, but it was cool to hang out with Henne's brother and play some catch in the pool. Non-Michigan related, on a plane ride back from that same Rose Bowl, I got to sit in first class because two of my dad's tickets got bumped up and he was letting me sit with him. We sat right across the aisle from some football players and they told us they were from Maryland. They were some big dudes all with dread locks. Pretty cool dudes, as I recall.

I've actually had the pleasure or displeasure (depending on who it was) of spending some quality time during sit downs with some of our infamous players. Oh my... Some of my favorite moments: - Mario and Mallet were the biggest D!cks ever. They never got along which actually surprised me considering the love for the special plant. I happened to be lucky that year and have some special goodies from California and had met both of them through mutual friends. I will never forget 30 minutes after THE HORROR my phone rang 10 times in a row... I couldn't even believe he was already out of the locker room. I definitely did not pick up that time especially cause he was rolling around with Johnny Sears who had such a joke of game. He wasn't even that fun to be around cause he wouldn't talk, just sit and smoke. Mallet would at least come over, hit the bong, hang out and talk even though it was always about himself. He was always nice to me though, but I'm pretty sure I know why that is... - On a side note, I had a buddy who had eaten some magic mushrooms at his apartment and at some point Mario showed up to see if he could get some herbals off him. My buddy said that Mario turned into a monster and made him crawl into a closet for the rest of the night. That does not sound fun. - Johnny Sears and Mario M. both failed the same drug test. Johnny got kicked off the team and Mario got suspended for Eastern. Those of you who think that Lloyd ran a crystal clean program have it wrong... Lloyd did many things off the record to keep certain players on the team aka Mario M. - Off of the pot topic, some of the nicest guys I have ever met/hung out with are Massey, Henne, B. Graham, W. Johnson, K.C Lopota, and B. Minor. None of them treated you as you were insignificant and they actually cared what you had to say. Good guys and wish them the most success. - The one time I ever spent time with Hart, we were at skeeps and I offered to buy him a shot. He said " I only drink Patron so you can buy me that." I bought him the shot, but def a prick thing to say. - My favorite Lloyd moment was when I was driving in the burns park neighborhood and saw him running so I pulled over and said hi. He stopped and talked to my for 5 minutes with the biggest smile ever. That is one good man... - The ESPN highlight of the 06 Ohio State (1v2) actually had a 3 second interval of me holding a sign right in row 1 before kickoff that read "Always remember Bo the Champion". Awesome. Man I wish we would have won that game. I've got more stories and will break them out at the right time!

quite the line of stories you have there. I would probably assume that Hart is a little bit of a prick, but probably still a nice guy from what I have seen. The Manningham thing doesn't surprise me at all. I've always wanted to meet Carr, though. He seems like a real good guy and I'm glad we have been able to have him associated with our University.

I was sitting ring side at an outdoor boxing event down in Miami three years back and Glen Rice sits down next to me. We get to talk for the remainder of the card and everyone that came up to him(he played for the Miami Heat for years if you don't recall) he would respond with 'Go Blue'. Best part was there was this guy a few feet away with a hideous tOSU jacket on.

I went down to Illinois for our game in 1994 with some friends. We hit up an IHOP for some pre-game pancakes and Bo and his wife came in behind us. We all shook hands with him and then insisted that they take the next available table ahead of us. Small encounter, but still really cool.

I haven't met anyone outside media day yet, it always seems that everyone in my family meets someone except me. My dad met Shaq at the magic kingdom while i was at epcot, my parents met lloyd twice at the art fair, and my uncle, aunt, and cousin were at the same hotel in montana as Tom Brady and they played catch in the pool! But in 04 i think, I had a broken arm when i went to media day, and i got steve breastons autograph, he asked what happened, i told him, and he said "i broke my thumb 3 times when i was little." Yeah. not that great. I'm still waiting for something cool. edit: and Tom Brady was not a dick

I was doing my work-study in an admin office for the Division of Kinesiology. One of the advisers - I think his name was Brad or something close to it - was supposedly popular with a lot of the athletes, and one day I was talking to him (about what, I don't remember...this is 17 years ago) and we were suddenly interrupted by a group of extremely tall men, all of whom were dropping in to see him. Being 5'4'', I had to drop my head back (kind of like the Peanuts gang when they sing "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" in "A Charlie Brown Christmas") just to see who they were. I was surrounded by Ray Jackson, Jalen Rose, and Juwan Howard. They were pretty friendly, considering how famous they already were. I'll never forget it.

These are two stories I've heard from people first hand: 1. Jimmy King showed up to play in the Muskegon Heights Summer League and was noticably under the influence. No one was really sure what was influencing him, but everyone was aware that he wasn't himself. At one point he caught the ball on the wing and jabbed with his right foot over 20 times while everyone just stared at him. Later, he threw a pass to someone in the stands. With like 30 seconds left in the game, with the game out of reach, someone was shooting free throws and at the other end of the floor Jimmy was running around shooting jumpers...with no ball! 2. One night a bunch of guys were sitting around an apartment drinking and playing video games near the UofM campus. After 2 AM, the door to the apartment opens and in walks a very drunk man, who walks straight to a couch. One of the guys originally in the apartment says to the visitor "Hey, aren't you Brian Griese?" To which the visitor replied "Yes, hand me a controller." The guys had never met Griese. After hanging out for a little, Griese asked them if they wanted to get pizza. Before they could answer he pulled out a credit card that read "Bob Griese" on it and he said "My Dad's rich.".......The guy who was there told me that Griese was real cool and hung out with them for a real long time before going home real earlier in the morning.

I have met Coach Beilein and around campus and saw Desmond at the Titletown filming last year. I have actually seen Beilein twice: first time I was picking up my paycheck from Weidenbach (I work for the Athletic Dept) and he was walking through the lobby as I walked in. He said how's it going to me. At first, I didn't even realize that it was him. I had to do a double take. The second time I saw Beilein was during the past spring semester. I went up to A2 for a day to take care of some things for classes and to visit a friend. We were walking to my friend's apartment after coming out of Angell. On the Diag, I saw Beilein walking towards me with what looked like a recruit and his family. He once again said hello to me and this time I responded with Hey Coach. Desmond was really cool at the Titletown filming. Before everything started, he met with the small group of the band that attended. Afterwards, Desmond stuck around to sign autographs and talk to fans. I didn't have anything for him to sign so I ran into the Grad to get a piece of paper. I kind of snuck my way up to the front of the group of people around Desmond. I got up to him and asked him to sign my slip of paper as a reporter from the Daily? asked him if it was a hard decision to come back to Ann Arbor the filming. Of course, he says that there was no doubt that he wanted to do that and that he loved the fans.

I was studying for the Bar Exam and signed up for a Prep Course for the Multi State portions, called PMBR. The Course was offered over a three day period, in most college towns. I went to the ONE PLACE to study for the bar where I knew I would not get distracted and want to go into the city to hang out....I CHOSE COLUMBUS, OHIO. I went out for Dinner wearing a UM Sweatshirt. I was staying at the Holiday Inn, right off High Street in Columbus. I was two days into studying and went out to get some fast food. While walking out of the parking lot a White Cadillac with Michigan Plates pulled up to me. An older distinguished man, who I recognized instantly rolled down the driver side window. The man stated, "Young Man, you must be pretty brave wearing that Sweatshirt around here." I stated simply, " I Bleed Blue, Mr. Schembechler.' He smiled, said "Go Blue."

1. On my first ever trip to Ann Arbor as a little kid I stayed at the campus inn, the same hotel the team stays at the night before the game. Saturday morning I'm in the lobby and the whole team is there eating breakfast. I go up to my room for the final time and as the elevator door is about to close Lloyd Carr walks in. I was awe-struck and could barely manage a "Good Luck Coach!". 2. My friend was playing beer pong with Tate last year and a couple of girls come up to Tate and ask him for his number. Tate is about to give the girls his number, but my friend tells Tate to make them earn it. My friend and Tate then spend the next 10 minutes or so making the girls do stuff before Tate gives them his number. (I wasn't there so I don't know the exact details) 3. After we beat Duke last year I rushed the court and was chanting "it's great to be a Michigan Wolverine" next to Will Campbell. I asked him if he was gonna commit to Michigan and he said yeah. This prompted me to make a mgoboard topic telling people not to worry about Will Campbell. 4. One of my friends from hs was visiting last year and I took him to my philosophy lecture. I told him beforehand that Stu Douglass was also in the class. When class starts my friend keeps asking me very loudly where Stu is sitting. I write in my notebook "SHUT THE FUCK UP HE'S SITTING RIGHT NEXT TO YOU!!!" and pass it to my friend.

William Peterson was in my Great Books class (the non-Honors variety). That alone was kind of surreal, but what was particularly odd was that the weekend before the first day of class (it was winter term), he'd just gotten in the huge frat brawl that got himself, Jason Brooks and Ray Jackson booted off the team. The front-page article in the Daily that morning was on the brawl. Peterson walks in a minute or two late, and the guy sitting behind me blurted, "That's the guy who got in the fight!" William heard it and shot us the iciest glare you can imagine. It scared the shit out of me. (BTW, he was actually a good student.)

I haven't really met too many athletes. I had Physics 140 (in the spring) with Graham Brown and was in his group in the lecture. He was a bit slow but pretty hard working and overall very nice. I also once ran into a drunk Steve Breaston at Bell's Pizza. It was Halloween weekend and my friend and I were completely obliterated and proceeded to tell him to "not score or do anything against the next team, and to save it for OSU". He was actually pretty nice though and didn't tell us to shut the fuck up like he probably should have. We felt like idiots the next day. And lastly, I used to see Alan Branch at Skeeps on a pretty regular basis. He stuck out like a sore thumb because he as so massive but he was actually a really nice guy. He always danced with the slightly plus sized girls though - I never really understood why...

A week before my first semester as a freshman in UM, I was staying in the Sheraton with my family near Briarwood mall. We were waiting for the elevator when all of a sudden a bunch of really tall, really big guys surrounded us and waited for the elevator too. I'm from Kuwait and knew next to nothing about football at the time, so they pretty much freaked me out and I thought they were gonna rob us or something. They were all shouting, laughing, and having a good time. When the elevator opened, only two of them walked in and made way for my family to step in too, while the rest of the team waited outside. Fine, young men we root for.

As a Christmas present two years ago I got front row seats to a home basketball game vs UCLA. We were winning at half time, so we were pretty excited as we got up to go buy some pop. As we were waiting to go up the stairs, I heard someone say "hello" right next to me. I turned, and was extremely surprised to see Lloyd standing next to me. He talked to us for a second, and then we got a picture with him(as seen in avatar). I don't remember what we talked about, but I rememberhim being really friendly. After we got back to our seats we noticed Mike Hart sitting a few rows behind Lloyd. We tried to say hello after the game, but someone called for him and he got up and walked down the tunnel.

-Eating candy and playing football all afternoon at a Victors Club luncheon before the 1996 hockey season with John Madden and Blake Sloan. Two really, really nice guys. -Hanging out on the field at Michigan Stadium with Nick Lachey and Bo when they were filming a GameDay segment, Labor Day ?2005? One of the weirdest experiences of my life, but both of them were really cool about the whole thing. Bo was downright hilarious, cracking jokes the whole time. I'd met him a bunch of times before that, but never in a situation where we had time to just kind of shoot the breeze. Nick Lachey is really, really short. -1997 Michigan Football Bust. My buddy and I were sitting at our table during dinner, both of us really excited to be there and wanting autographs. We notice Brian Griese goes to the bathroom, and us being shameless 11 year old kids, decide this would be a great time to try to get his autograph. So we both grab our posters or whatever we had with us, and went and waited outside the bathroom. He was really gracious about the whole thing, and even made a joke about it in his M Ring speech a half hour later. Later on that evening, I got an autograph from a quiet-looking redshirt freshman who assured me I didn't really want his autograph because he didn't play that season. I got it anyway. 11 years later, he has a handful of Super Bowl rings and is married to a model. Go figure. -I took a class my junior year that was chock full of athletes. 3 of the starting 5 basketball players, most of the softball team, the entire starting defensive secondary, and a bunch of offensive skill players. Leon Hall was in my discussion section. Anyways, I'm sitting in class one day reading MGoBlog on my laptop. Some posting with a picture of Mike Hart. All of the sudden a guy comes in late and sits next to me. I look over, and it's Mike Hart. I said hi and closed that window as fast as I could. -I was in the hockey band in school. On NCAA trips we usually stayed in the same hotel as the team. I got to hang out with Jack Johnson's family in North Dakota in 2006, played mini-hockey and arcade games all day before the game with his little brother. His parents are incredibly nice people. We sat around the lobby in Denver in 2007 and watched him and his dad come in and out of the computer center negotiating his NHL contract, too. After the Frozen Four loss to Notre Dame in 2008, I was in the elevator with Aaron Palushaj and Max Pacioretty and a couple band kids. We're chatting a little bit, (Aaron asked us why we "weren't out boozin'" after a game like that) and this woman gets on the elevator. She notices they're wearing their Michigan warmup suits and asks them how the game went. Aaron: We blew it. Woman: Oh, that's too bad. Well, there's always the game tomorrow. Aaron: There is no game tomorrow. Woman: Oh... um... (silence) Pretty damn awkward to say the least.

Last year I lost my roommate after one semester and ended up getting Anthony LaLota as a replacement. I set up all my stuff in my room and come back later that night to find him chilling with Tate Forcier and Will Campbell on my couch. I guess both had been told they were going to room with one another before getting to school, and while they were not, Tate refused to go live in his own room and instead lived on my couch for the next week. He was kind of a d bag. He would stay on the phone until 2 in the morning and play video games instead of going out with the rest of the guys on Friday nights. I ended up giving him the room and moving two doors down into Vincent Smith's old room, and got 4 field passes to the game of my choice for my troubles.

As a student, I worked at a small restaurant that gave discounts to athletes. A bunch of then-current and former players came in. Victor Hobson, David Terrell, Bernard Robinson Jr, and Jim Abbott, are a few I remember. Also, Mike Gittleson used to order the tuna sub quite a bit. So the "Gittleson diet" isn't just pizza...

I have a bunch of pretty good stories (and one pretty bad one) since I've met with many of the Michigan football legends of the last five decades due to my work with the Maloy Scholarship Auction (see my sig below for further details). That said, my most interesting encounter happened when I was a senior in high school. I had been admitted to Michigan and I was walking around New York City with my father and wearing a Michigan t-shirt when an older African-American gentlemen crossed the street and said he liked my t-shirt and asked me if I was a student. I told him I was enrolling in the fall. In this deep deep distinguished voice that I couldn't quite pinpoint he said "the University of Michigan is the greatest institution of higher learning on this earth. You've been earned an opportunity hundreds of thousands of your peers would kill for. Make the most of it and do the University, and yourself proud. I was told the same thing over forty years ago when I was a freshman and no words were ever more true. Go Blue!" I knew I recognized the voice but couldn't place it until he walked away and my father told me that I had just been addressed by James Earl Jones.
