Beckmann's successor?

Submitted by allinforM on

In Angelique's story today about Frank Beckmann's last game, he says of his successor in the booth:

"I hope they give it to (Doug) Karsch. He knows the game inside and out. He's passionate about it. He knows Michigan so well. I have no say in it. Nobody's asked me, and that's how it should be."

At first, this felt like one of DB's trial balloons, but it is probably only him going to bat for a colleague.

Can't say if he would be good or not, but I would be worried about the call that goes: "And the 50-yard field goal attempt is on its way ... and I'll tell you at 12:50 if it was good or not."

a huge M fan.  I see him often at Softball games.  There is no doubt he knows Michigan.  I dont think he will do a good job as he hurts my ears on his mid-day show.

Shep is a much better choice IMO.

Yup. He's a slick broadcasting talent but he is very prone to contrivances. He's still trying to turn "Touchdown Detroit Lions!" into a legendary trademark. It never will be.

I totally agree about Miller. I love listening to him call Lions games, I just don't know what kind of loyalty he has to Michigan.

The thing about Karsch is that I don't know if he has any play by play experience. That seems like a specific skill that you can't just learn on the job. Maybe I'm wrong. It would be kinda funny to have an MSU grad doing the play by play too.

Like what? He's been negative about Michigan before but sometimes that's what the facts demand. It's never been personal from what I've seen. He is from DC so there are no rivalry loyalties that would make him have strong feelings against UM.

Grab Mark Champion, he and Brandy were awesome together, can't believe anyone would suggest Dan Miller, he is no better than a shadow of Champion. Though I have no idea of his fandom...

I like this suggestion. Doug Karsch is just awful. I don't dislike Matt Shepherd like a lot of folks on here do, but he would seem like a step down from Beckman. Doesn't Bob Ufer have any children in broadcasting???

Dan Dickerson, but it probably won't be a good match with the Tigers schedule and all.

Personally I can't stand Dan Miller, he rarely relay's the down and distance and I hate his, "Touchdown Detroit Lions!" call, so please god no.

To be honest I really have no idea, but I think it likely goes to Shepard with his affiliation with UM athletics already.

He did a radio interview with Boomer Esiason a few weeks ago and said that the reason he was hanging it up at MNF was the travel from STL coupled with a whole lotta injuries.

But damn he would be good....

but I don't think he's got the best voice for play-by-play. I think he'd be tremendous at color, because he's as tuned in to Michigan personnel and history as anybody is.

having no plausible idea except that Shepherd would be awful. It would be nice to have someone with a history with Michigan. Part of my love of Beckmann is his connection with so many teams and great Michigan figures. It will be like falling off a cliff to listen to someone who is just being introduced to the program.

What does Eisen do for NFL network? I et he could do some of it in addition to Michigan play by play. He might even want to do Michigan play by play instead depending on his family situation. He loves Michigan. Personally I think I prefer Karsh though only because his voice is more musical.

Rich Eisen is a smarmy New York asshole who used his perch to throw bombs at RR a few years ago and is part of the elitist fringe who begged for a "pro-style" offense to come back to Michigan.

I would prefer to never be reminded that he went to UM let alone have him be the voice of the program.
