The Michigan coaching staff has offered another 2016 QB prospect in Shea Patterson. Patterson is currently committed to Arizona, but told me that he is open to anything.

Patterson called the Michigan offer, a "big one" with a laugh. The rest of his offer list is very impressive so calling MIchigan a big offer is a good indication of what he thinks of the Wolverines.

Coach Jackson went down to Shreveport a couple of weeks ago to watch Patterson throw, a session that Shea described as very sharp, and after some discussion with Coach Nuss an offer was extended tonight. Shea received the offer personally from Coach Nuss over the phone.

Patterson says he will visit Michigan within the next few weeks.

I hope to have more from Shea tomorrow.

Patterson is the fifth quarterback in the class of 2016 to receive an offer joining Dwayne Haskins, Malik Henry, KJ Costello, and Jacob Eason.

He doesn't look like a Rich Rod quarterback. Great arm but not a dual threat type in the mold RR seems to like. I think he would be great here.

Thanks for the update Brandon.

Rodriguez's system doesn't necessarily require a high-speed running threat like Pat White or Denard Robinson. Matt Scott threw for 3,600 yards in 2012 and BJ Denker threw for 2,500 yards last season. Both can run a little bit, but neither is a blazer.

You really only have to be fast enough to keep a defensive end honest in his system. John Navarre wouldn't work, but guys like Patterson, Tate Forcier, etc. can do the job.

That being said, the vibe is that Patterson won't end up signing with Arizona anyway, so it might be a moot point.

I am pretty sure he was from Toledo originally.  If this is who I think it is,  I knew the family a long time ago.  I had heard they had a younger son who was becoming a big time recruit.  I am pretty sure his brother played QB at St John's Jesuit in Toledo several years back.  If so, the distance would not be quite the same deal as a normal kid from there.  I could be off, but I am pretty sure that is correct.

See this is why I am in full support of Coach Hoke's no visit policy. This kid is committed to Arizona in name only, the way he talks about Michigan it is clear he is only using Zona as a placeholder for now. It benefits no one to have a kid with his status like this, so I'd rather there be no middle ground.

You say you're in favor of Hoke's no visit policy, but obviously you have no problems with him and staff recruiting those committed to other schools. This also seems like somewhat of a contradiction by Hoke. He wants his players to stay committed to UM but everyone else's commits are fair game for him.                              ^I do agree with his present status serving no useful purpose, however.  It is very odd for a kid to commit to a school and say publicly he's open for anything.  AZ, only last year received its first ever 5 star commit but it didn't stick. It really doesn't sound like this one is going to end up there either.                     ^Personally, I'd like to see Hoke tailor his stance on this a little.  I don't mind and understand why he wants these kids to make sure they want to be at Michigan before they commit because they can then move on to the next target on the list.  However, I wouldn't accept a commit from a recruit, under the conditions stated by Hoke, unless they had all their shopping done and were damn sure of which suit they want to walk out of the store with. I'd  encourage them actually to take visits prior to committing because they already know what 2012 and 2013 were like, the reason obviously Campbell and Harris backed out of their commits. I don't know what his pitch is but he has to convince likely game changes such as the two listed above that most of the pieces are in place and when you commit to Michigan all the pieces will be in place and the likelihood of becoming a household name after their third game or so are far more likely if they are the one the announcers are talking about as being responsible for returning Michigan to its former status.  Of course it's unwise to negative recruit but w/o even mentioning names it should be easy for Brady the above scenario is far more likely here "because all we need is you" instead of going to a place that has a log jam at virtually every position and, if fortunate, you might see the field in two years after the RS year.

I don't see this as a problem for Hoke.  It would be stupid to not pursue players who have made verbal commitments elsewhere when almost every other coach and team are doing it.  Not recruiting these players would put Michigan at a serious disadvantage. Also, the NCAA rules make it so that high schoolers can't take official visits until the start of classes their senior year, but the offers are going out earlier and earlier, and a lot of players are making verbal commitments early as well.  Shea is in the class of 2016--he's still over a year away from being able to take official campus visits.

every school faces the same issue.  Guys get other offers after they've committed, plus the schools that had already been in the mix still have their offers extended.  It's just a fact of life.  Every school, just like UM, has to develop their own policy on visiting after committment.

Personally I like Hoke's policy.

Michigan doesn't stop you from talking to other coaches. They can't. What they say is that if you visit another school your position is not guaranteed. In Michigan's view, the guy isn't really committed if he is willing to visit Michigan. How the other school handles the verbal is up to the coach of that school.

Michigan doesn't accept a verbal if  the recruit still wants to visit. There isn't much you can do if the recruit changes his mind and decides he wants to look around. If he goes on a visit they will recruit the positition again.

what a commitment means for both cases - a kid's verbal here or another school. In both cases, a visit to another school means there is no true commitment. No different than a girlfriend; if you find out she's locking lips with another guy, she's not your girlfriend. If she "has a boy friend" and goes on a date with you, she's available. Don't we all practice Hoke's policy in some ways?

I thought Hoke said the position coach was going to be more involved in recruiting their area of expertise?

As someone who played with his older brother in high school, I can say I would be very surprised if Shea ended up anywhere other then where his older brother Sean coaches. I think the interesting question is if some schools actually make a pitch to hire his older brother after his season as a GA in Arizona. Could be a very entertaining recruitment to play out. Unfortunately I don't see Michigan being the choice with him. Although Nussmeier may help the cause.

as I don't think he's going to be spending his whole career everywhere that only his brother coaches.  That seems like such a self-induced limiting factor.  He's looks like such a strong pro-style QB, I'm not sure why he'd think that RRods offense would be the best place for him to develop.    Welcome to the Blog, by the way...

Thanks,

You make good points, and I have no insider info on the topic, I only say that because of how involved their family has been in each others sporting endeavors. I remember Shea being at nearly every practice of Seans throughout high school, along with his father. So I'm just assuming that if there is an opportunity for them to keep that bond going, I would not be surprised to see them take it.

I'd love to see him in blue eventually though, that would be great.

I'm not much of a QB scouting type, but I liked his footwork.  Stays on the balls of his feet and throws off the front foot, or so it seems to me.  Also, he seems to be able to deliver an accurate ball even when there's a defender in his face...looks like he can deal with adversity.  Finally, I wouldn't mind seeing more film on some of the receivers he's throwing to.  A couple of those guys look REALLY  fast...
