BBall Recuiting - New 2020 Offer/EM 5* Guard Nimari Burnett

Submitted by Matt EM on May 7th, 2019 at 4:12 PM

Nimari Burnett just confirmed with me that Coach Beilein extended an offer. He gave me a quick update to say that Coach Beilein told him he generally offers in person only, and since he (Nimari) couldn't take the academic tour he wanted to wait, but decided to extend the offer today considering Nimari didn't complete the visit because he came down with the flu.

I'll get ahead of the curve here...…..Nimari also says he does not have an official visit set up to Michigan yet. I'll talk more with Burnett and his parents this weekend

With Davis being a rs senior next year and Livers a good shot at going pro after next year, we will have about 4-5 more spots open depending on how this class fills out. A grad transfer wont factor in next year, for example.

Saw where Ethan Morton has 3 crystal balls towards Purdue today, wonder if this is related to that?

Um....Yes

1) Livers is almost a full year (20 vs. 19) older than Poole - meaning that Livers should be in theory more of a finished product

2) Livers played 15 mins as a freshmen up to 23 as a soph - Poole went from 12 to 33 - meaning he had more in-game development opportunities and played more crucial minutes in his college career

3) Poole is a 6'5 back-court player with a clear position (SG) and the length / athleticism to defend his position in the NBA - Livers is a 6'7 front-court player with an unclear position (SF / PF) in the NBA and no matter where you place him, he will have challenges from either a size or athleticism perspective.

Now, with all that being said, I love me some Livers and am very happy that he will be back in an even more prominent role next year. But even if you were to think Livers is a better COLLEGE basketball player than Poole (which I kinda do), any argument that he is a better prospect than Poole at this point or even has a good chance at going to the league after next year is just an absurd statement (see Winston, Cassius).

Obviously I'm a HS evaluation service, but I watch a TON of NBA, and I'd lean the other way. Poole does not have the lateral agility, strength or motor to defend any position at this point in my opinion. Whereas I think Livers can be a defender that can defend two different positions in the NBA with his combination of size/athleticism/strength.

Poole, for NBA purposes, is a two guard with some shot creating ability, an erratic shot, and sub-par athleticism. Livers is a 3&D guy with defined role that has the look of a competent defender.

I causally know Mike Schmitz and Sam Vecenie. Both think Livers has some NBA potential after this year, Sam is particularly intrigued by him.

Respect your evaluation skills, but we'll have to agree to disagree on this. Not saying, I don't see Livers having some pro interest and/or potential but Poole was always on the radar for a pro career after a few years at UM, whereas there has not been a similar buzz on Livers. Also, length at the position and range are becoming increasingly important in the NBA game - IMO Poole has both and Livers only has one.

I would be happy to be proven wrong and have Livers blow up next year, but barring that, I think there's a beyond good chance we see him use all 4 years of eligibility at UM.

Projection is an inexact science, and so reasonable minds will differ and your opinion is just as valuable as my own. That said, buzz is sort of meaningless in this type of dialogue. If we're being analytical based on physical profile and skillset, anyway. Poole doesn't really have great positional size at the NBA level at 6'4 and is a sub-par athlete at that level by nearly any account. Livers doesn't have great positional size either, but he's adequate at 6'6-6'7, while being a better athlete by a healthy margin.

I've never been a huge believer in length as it relates to non-centers, it just doesn't make much of a difference when players are moving. It benefits centers greatly because they can alter shots from a stationary position. Its rare for non-centers to fully extend while moving on the perimeter in a way that makes a functional difference. We're talking about a 1 inch difference for a single arm in most cases (equates to 2 inches of wingspan differential - 1inch per arm)

You're the one resorting to name-calling. Beyond my Dave Brandon inspired initial response, you responded with a question on my opinion which I provided reasons for. You can choose to disagree, and others may also disagree- fine. But beyond feelings and conjecture, I don't see anything to change the narrative, especially when you phrased your question around who is the more developed player now -- I think the fact that Poole is staying in the draft and it was not really an option for Livers (despite being a year older) answers that question (again, you are free to disagree).

Livers will be a better pro than Poole.  Book it.

Now what that MEANS is up to how you evaluate being "better".  I believe he'll average more points and rebounds than Poole does in the NBA.  (Rebounds obviously because Poole won't be doing any of that.)

IMO your initial response was dismissive and disrespectful.  I think you are clearly wrong but hey, you are entitled to your opinion.  But if you want others to treat your opinion with respect then your initial take was inappropriate IMO.

I think comparing Livers to Poole as players isn't terribly predictive. Poole was unhappy with his role on the team and was determined to leave, whether that's a good professional decision or not. Under normal circumstances he'd probably return. I wouldn't predict Livers will be in the same position a year from now.
