BBall Recruiting - New 2020 Target/Top 50 Guard Dalen Terry

Submitted by Matt EM on February 13th, 2019 at 9:51 AM

Dalen Terry (Hillcrest Prep/AZ) is the teammate of 2020 target Dayten Hollman............I'd say the staff is more serious about Terry at this point.

Dalen reminds me a lot of Iowa State freshman Tyrese Haliburton. His playmaking ability at that size is the type of talent NBA GMs really like.

To be a bit more specific, while I absolutely love what Simpson brings in terms of on-ball defense, leadership and competitive nature, its just extremely difficult to run a pick and roll dominant offense with him as your PG. Think we need to see a lot more off-ball action (screens and flex cuts) to get our wings (Matthews and Iggy) the ball while already on the move.

Far too much isolation where our guys have to create a shot with a live dribble in my opinion.

All seriousness, I think you're absolutely right.  What concerns do you have at the 3 spot next year?  Matthews is most likely gone and Iggy.....who knows.  If Iggy decides to leave, seems like we have a huge hole at the 3.  Livers moves into the 4 spot, but no way Johns is athletic enough to play the 3.  What do you think Coach B is looking at here?  Wilson will be a true frosh and isn't elite to think he can contribute right away with top numbers.  Cole probably falls into the Camp Sanderson for year until he can contribute.  Does the staff look at a transfer for reassurance?  Try to snag another 19 recruit, if that is even possible at this point?

Nunez, or another guard (Brooks or DDJ) enters the rotation and Poole can play the 3 (he did a bit last night w/ Brooks & Simpson at 1/2). That's if Iggy leaves of course. I strongly doubt we can grab a '19 recruit who would contribute next year ahead of DDJ & Nunez, especially since those two were higher priorities than a hypothetical late add this year (and would have a year of experience).

Barring a mass exodus (Matthews plus 2+ of Poole/Iggy/Teske) I dont think we're looking at a lack of rotations options next year since DDJ, Johns, Castleton, Nunez and basically Brooks are all waiting in the wings. Now, whether they're all good enough to sustain us as a top 10 national program is yet to be seen.

Can someone explain to me why people are so down on Nunez? What has he done for people to be so down on him besides come into a game for like 30 seconds and nail a deep 3?

I'm honestly tired of people getting down on freshmen when they haven't even had a chance to make an impact yet. Most Michigan players don't make an impact until their sophomore or even junior season

He's a development player.  There it is.  He was known for having a great shot, but in his limited playing time he's shot 1/8 from three.  For a team desperate for some outside shooting, Nunez would likely be that answer, but apparently hasn't figure the college game/offensive philosophy yet.

I don't think that justifies dumping on him though.

NBA Ready isn't really a consideration for alot of draft picks. Teams pick on potential. None of our guys are going in the lottery, so teams are going to be just fine with stashing them in the D league and let them develop. If they were lottery picks, they'd be going to bad teams and playing time would be available because those teams aren't concerned with winning in the near future.

His stock will only go down after this season. The only thing that could boost his stock if he suddenly became a great passer. Right now he's an abysmal passer and gets severe tunnel vision with the ball. But he's got limited athleticism, solid shot, solid finisher due to an array of different types of shots down there. Plays hard on defense and goes after rebounds as well. He's a role player at the next level. He might be able to squeak into the first round this year, but he's probably a second rounder. Won't go higher than that in the future, even if he becomes a better player. It would take a Levert level jump between his freshman and sophomore seasons to bump his stock, but Iggy is much closer to his ceiling than Caris was as a freshmen.

With respect to this year, I think Coach Beilein would be better served to scrap the heavy PnR for some Horns Action (labeled as such because two players occupy the elbow areas to form 'horns'), but I don't necessarily think Coach Beilein likes Horns based on spacing/lack thereof. But Coach Beilein has forgot more basketball than I'll ever know so he obviously knows what he's doing.

I watch a TON of NBA, and I don't think any of our guys are NBA rotation players that should be drafted in the first round. All have clear limitations/red flags. But that doesn't account for what those guys are thinking in a weak draft class. I do think we search the grad transfer market for an instant impact wing if we suffer notable attrition.

We're still in for 19 wing Lester Quinones (made his top 7), and he's your typical 'just shooter' type.

agree... also dont get why JP and :Livers dont do more two man, both can shoot the triple and both have some ability to go off dribble (livers limited)

also feels like when we get switches with teske we dont post him and let him go to work, if nothing else one or two attempts will lead to quick out threes (which we have to hit)

I think last night we actually (for once) tried to feed Teske for a post up vs a mismatch and we immediately turned it over. I'm guessing we just dont work on it much (practice time is a limited resource) so even if it would make sense in theory it isn't practical. Like if a spread passing offense goes against a defense that is small and can't stop an old school power rushing offense...can't just suddenly become a completely different offense unless you're the Patriots

Simpson has been and remains the elephant in the room on the offensive end. When the ball is not in his hands you pretty much do not need to guard him. Furthermore, when the ball is in his hands there is no off-ball help required-possibly from Matthew's defender...which allows the off-ball defense to stay in position to make life difficult for, especially, Poole and Iggy. Teams know if you let Poole catch and shoot he can bury you. They also know that if you give Iggy a seam he will bury you. They are willing to take their chances of playing Simpson, Teske and Matthews straight up-because neither of those 3 will bury you.

This is not rocket science at this point in the season-for the opposition...lots of film out there to scheme from. Simpson has the ball you play him soft and strong right and just let him dribble until he has no place to go-you let him shoot anything but layups-all night long. If Simpson does not have the ball his defender is sagging back in, clogging up the driving lanes and helping out wherever needed. The other defenders can be in their guy's shirt-because Simpson's defender is available to help.

This is fact and reality from here on out...and it is going to get worse-not better. So, the possibilities/options??? 1) Simpson has to shoot at least 35% from deep, 2) Simpson has to shoot 50% from inside the arc or 3) Simpson goes to the bench...and it looks right now as though Poole is your best option at "point"...Livers time increases significantly...you could try putting Nunez out there to snipe away.

What we have seen recently is very much what happened in the NCAA tourney last year...the reality is that, here, Michigan got lucky. " 'Reality' strikes deep...into your life it will creep". Whether you like it or not.

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts...Matt D (if you are afforded the latitude :)

Also its clear the staff is simply recruiting for guards at this point.......and will sort out the positions later on. Translation, its not certain Zeb Jackson is being brought in strictly as a PG.

Also clear that our recruiting board has taken on more of a national flavor since Coach Yaklich came aboard. I can certainly confirm the man is a relentless recruiter that puts in a ton of time on the recruiting trail. With him on board, there's really no need to offer local guys that may be questionable fits (Harlond Beverly, Jalen Terry, etc.)

I don't see anyone on this team that is an NBA player, including Matthews.  Doesn't mean they won't leave, and I'm sure Matthews will, but no one jumps out as an NBA player.

I have no actual measurements to prove this, but his wingspan looks to be at least 6'8" or 6'9". He has some really long arms. He looks like a super intriguing player
