BBall Recruiting - New 2020 Target/4* Ben Carlson
Add Ben Carlson to the board for 2020. Highly skilled kid with a college ready frame looks like an ideal fit at the 4/5 spot.

Looks pretty good. Minnesota has a few kids in 2020 that look like ball players.

It’d be a deal if the staff stays all in on Carlson until the very end, as his 2021 HS teammate, Kendall Brown, is a top 20 kid

Looks like a good fit for us. One thing I think JB should try and recruit more are some guys (guards preferably) that are quick with the dribble and can beat their defenders one on one to the basket. I don’t feel like we have a guy that can go get a bucket on his own when we really need it. Matthews and Iggy think they can, but the ladder of the two just has no quickness to him. I was hoping Brooks could be that guy but his handle just isn’t good enough.

Add Poole this group, and they all can, one on one, it's when teams play good help d that can stymie things. Livers isn't bad either.

Michigan plays great help D and they get beat in iso situations all the time. Poole settles for long 2 pt jump shots and 3s because he struggles getting to the basket. He is not an iso guy.

We generally havent had that under Beilein. MAAR could get his own during his finally year, but before that, not really any I can remember. Offense is more about passing/cutting/screening rather than iso.

Trey Burke, Nick Stauskas, Derrick Walton.....all could take their man off the dribble and get a basket whenever they really wanted to. JB’s system is great, and works most of the time, but if it struggles for whatever reason in a game, we turn into a very poor offensive team.

Going iso against Wisconsin didn't cost us the game IMO. We just couldn't hit our outside shots. Other than Poole, we don't have a guy who hits them consistently enough. That's our biggest weakness, more so than FT shooting.

It's very rare that I have any critique of Coach Beilein from an Xs and Os standpoint, but Saturday certainly wasn't his finest moment. We went with the same high pick and roll set - with Poole/X & Teske, with no off-ball movement elsewhere to occupy the helpside defense - for the final 8 minutes of the game. Once Wisconsin adjusted to our PnR, which was basically to blitz the ballscreen, tag the roller with the defender checking our guys in the corner, and dare Michigan to shoot semi-contested 3s, the ballgame was over. No adjustments made at all. Its rare that Coach Beilein allows this to happen, but it does happen to the very best once in a while.

Zach Loveday apparently has an offer from Michigan. So I guess he and Carlson answer my question about C targets for 2020

I could see him in a Beilein system for sure.

Carlson took an unofficial visit back in September.

I still look at some of these videos and think, "Here are kids less than half my age but about twice my height. I apparently drank the wrong water or something"
In all seriousness, he does look like he'd fit well in Beilein's system.

Is the department of housing supposed to run itself?!

Just watched film of him and he looks very impressive, a perfect fit for Beilein, would love to see this kid in Maize n Blue!

I do not like these recent offers-look at them with skepticism...because...does this indicate a low(erring) chance of getting Kessler??? It seems as though Kessler would be a great fit for both the player and the coach/school.

Can't afford to put all your eggs in just that one basket, no matter how good it looks.

Kessler now has serious interest in Duke. We are going to lose 90% of recruiting battles with Duke. Can’t put your eggs all in one basket.
When Winston was down to us and MSU for almost a year and still hadn’t decided, JB went with the bird in hand. Might have to do the same with Kessler. Can’t wait out a recruitment we are likely to lose when we absolutely have to have a C in this class.

Not only do we have to battle Duke for this guy, but Georgia may actually be the leader.
Walker Kessler's father (Chad), late uncle (Alec) and brother (Houston) played basketball at Georgia.

FYI - Carlson's sister plays VB at Kansas State
