BBall Recruiting - New 2019 Target/EM Top 100 Wing Jae'lyn Withers

Submitted by Matt EM on

Really love how Coach Beilein and staff are aggressively pursuing high end talent (even if not ranked highly to the mainstream sites just yet)..........Withers will no doubt make my top 100 when released tomorrow or Friday. This kid is extremely athletic, NBA size and can shoot the hell out of the ball out to 28 feet. Body type, athleticism and shooting ability reminds me a bit of 17 offer Jamal Cain............who had a really nice freshman season at Marquette.

Again, 'I'm hearing the most from X, Y, Z school' is generally code word for a top group.

I would place Withers in the top 5 of my 19 pecking order including offers and targets.

Withers, from a preliminary evaluation standpoint (haven't seen him live), seems to have NBA potential down the road. Functionally, in a Michigan offense, seems like he'd be a 3/4 type similar to Brandon Johns. But I think Withers has more athleticism and defensive versatility in relation to Johns, and hence more upside down the road.

Duke and UNC can essentially come in during the last month of a recruitment and nab a commitment in many cases. Unless a prospect is a well-known, top 25-30 kid, they simply don't prioritize those types for the most part. I don't think Withers is a one and done type, and that is the route those type of programs (Duke at least) are utilizing.

That said, I'll be happy if neither UNC or Duke enter the mix. Would love to have Withers aboard.

based on the final rankings in April of his senior year. He took quite a dive during his last year of HS. Great athlete, just not very skilled at the time. He's definiteley developed his skillset at Michigan, but still not quite where we need him to be at in order to be a primary shot creator that we lack.

Hands down, he's the best available talent and the position where we most need an impact player.

After that I'd still have DJ Carton based on positional/role need, from there it'd be Sam Williamson, Romeo Weems and then Withers. It's pretty tight for me with respect to Williamson, Weems and Withers..........all very good prospects that I'd love to have.

Those are generally perimeter players, likely in the mold of combo-guards or wings. We just need a player that can break down the defense and mandate a secondary defender to create open shots for others. The roster lacked that this year, although MAAR was competent in that regard to a certain extent.

Poole can potentially be a guy that does that, and perhaps DeJulius as well. Maxey is an absolute no-brainer........he will do that.

Do we expect a change to one and done before the 2019 guys sign? If so that can explain why we’re hitting up these top dudes. They probably know they can’t jump to the NBA or G league so it’s worth pursuing since they’ll likely be around more than 1 year.

criminally underrated. I tried to get him to play with us on the EYBL in Charlotte for years. he's an amazing kid who shoots the cover off the ball. there's not 60 ppl in the country better then him. he's more athletic then ppl give him credit for as well. it would be huge if Michigan could pull him out of the ACC
