Basketball Practice Underway at Crisler
As reported by Tim, the men's basketball team will embark on a nine-day trip to Europe, including four exhibition games in Belgium. Here's the schedule:
- Aug 22: Ghent
- Aug 23: Leuven
- Aug 25: Oostande
- Aug 26: Mons
A direct benefit of the European exhibition tour is the ability to start pre-season practice early, a vital factor for this team after the loss of DeShawn Sims and Manny Harris.
And according to these tweets, today is the first day of practice and it's already underway:
bacari34 Completed an informative July and now it's time to shut it down so I can sweat with the players in the morning! Preparing for European trip.
Michigan_mbball Lots of squeaking shoes at Crisler. Yep. First practice in prep for Europe trip has begun. Lots of hard work in already.
This trip is perfect for this team and this program. It allows for extra practice and competitive games against quality competition, provides the team with an extra opportunity to bond prior to the start of the season, and significantly -- allows Coach Beilein to showcase U-M to European ballers. The recruiting aspect of this trip should not be understated.
August will be a busy month with much to keep us engaged as we anxiously await the football season's kickoff at the Sep 4 Michigan Stadium Rededication Game vs. UConn.
- Aug 2-3: Big Ten meetings and media days
- Aug 9: Football pre-season football practice commences
- Aug 22-26: Men's Basketball pre-season European exhibition tour

Will there be video footage available of the basketball teams Eurotrip?
...the athlectic department will bring along the cameras for various features that they'll post to mgoblue.com, but it's just a guess.

Are there any plans to have an open practice Sept 4? They did that at least once last year but later in the season as I recall.
...will be in a non-practice period then. According to the D-1 Manual:
17.3.2 Preseason Practice—On-Court Practice. A member institution shall not commence on-court preseason basketball practice sessions prior to 5 p.m. on the Friday nearest October 15 (see Figure 17-2). (Revised: 4/28/05 effective 8/1/05, 1/14/08 effective 8/1/08)
And according to Fig 17-2, this year's date is: October 15, 2010, 5 p.m. This underlines the importance of these early practice sessions and the exhibition tour to the team's progress.
Thanks - good info. Are the summer practices/games/overseas tours their own separate session? I'm thinking last year that open practice on a football game day was sometime in October - Crisler was open immediately after the game.
...that's exactly right. They're their own separate session that's allowed solely because of the international tour. The tour is a stroke of brilliance on the part of Coach Beilein IME.
you forgot about Aug. 13 (sorry to bring that up, but its kind of important)
...Aug 13-14 in Seattle is certainly something to watch, but it doesn't belong in a list of things to keep the fanbase going before the season starts.
You're right, it's important and I'm sure Michigan will be uber-prepared for it.
...liked what he saw yesterday.
@JohnBeilein: Practice went great for our European trip yesterday. Looking forward to another day of teaching! Go Blue.
