Banner contest
For some reason the site won't let me post a comment under the Banner Contest post, so I'll post it here. I love the Mike Clements design, but not the shade of blue he used on the left. That blue belongs to UCLA. With the proper, darker shade of blue, I think it would be our winner.
I'm surprised how many Denard-centric designs there are. I love the guy but he hasn't yet won the job. I think it's a little premature to feature him.

I thought this was a post by that guy who would always create a Board post about what had been put on the main page. i.e. "Hey everybody. Brian has now posted the UFR for the PSU game"
i miss that guy for absolutely no reasonable reason

whichever color scheme works for me

Is it possible to vote for keeping the current banner? It's too good to get rid of.

the two submissions by Tateisgreatyo 2 both focus on Denard.

I especially like the two(!) Denard-centric designs by "Tateisgreateyo"
EDIT: Dammit

...banner, FWIW.

So far I still like the current banner the best, as well. I just wish it was expanded to fit across the whole screen.

Also a fan of the banner banner, but the simple (we'll call it "contemporary") submission by Austin Spaeth gets my vote.

...on any individual player, personally.

with all of the entries. Shocked there wasn't more MS Paint, though.
I know that mine, featured on day 1, was way different than all of the other entries in that it didn't feature anything football at all, but I thought, this Blog covers all Michigan sports. I don't want to single one out. Don't know where the car idea came from, though.

The originality of yours is what puts it at the top of my list. I hope yours wins.

As an aside, the litigitious section of the University has demanded I take the winged helmet off the existing banner as part of a push to make sure the internet isn't signifying their allegiance to Michigan
Unfortunately, this is going to force a redesign of most of the banner submissions - any use of the Block M must come with express permission as it's the University's official branding mechanism.
edit: Oh hey, the University updated their usage policies (HOWEVA, my point still stands).

I'm wondering about the validity of the designs featuring photos of players. Will those get shut down?
August 11th, 2010 at 3:21 PM ^
The helmet wings are a design in three dimensions, often represented in a 2 dimensional format. Are they even able to protect any 2 dimensional shapes that even appear they COULD be the winged helmet in 3 dimensions? After all, in the banner there, we can't say that the other side of Minor's helmet doesn't do some crazy, non wing thing.

Both are good questions but a copyright lawyer I am not. Of course, I won't let my amateurism preclude me from commenting on it.
With regards to the players' images bit, I believe that the same NCAA rule that keeps student-athletes from being used in product endorsements applies here. The question is whether or not you can consider MGoBlog itself a product or say, a news outlet. I'd put it in a grey area.
With regards to the current banner (it's got wings!), Minor's wings are cut off. Were they always cut off? I thought it was a full wing but... well, that type of detail is easily lost until it's called into attention. The order could be to remove the ghosted wings on the right.

Whoops.Do not:
9. enclose the mark in a shape or combine it with other design elements or effects.
August 11th, 2010 at 3:20 PM ^
...the University granting use of its mark to an entity. When the U-M Club of DC was spearheading the effort to get Virginia to add Univ of Michigan plates to its offerings, it required that the Club's POC for the effort gain permission for the use of the M. Thanks to the Club's efforts (as well the Richmond and Tidewater clubs) we now have this:
Mine is W1VRNS, BTW.
August 11th, 2010 at 4:06 PM ^
You missed the point. The 'M' should not be enclosed in any outside shape. Take a look at the 'M' again.
August 11th, 2010 at 4:17 PM ^
...Perhaps the license plate design was approved before that particular guideline was adopted? Perhaps U-M gave the Michigan DMV special design dispensation?
August 12th, 2010 at 12:22 AM ^
The University released that design to the Secretary of State. In fact that is the license plate I have, and it costs a $13/year premium, but that goes to the University as a donation. At least that's what they told me.

I think it's a little premature to feature him.I think that was the point of this block to vote on. Seems like Brian put a bunch of the Denard banners in one block so as only the best Denard-centric banner makes it to the next round.

Does the copyright pertain to photographs as well? I took the one I used for mine at the Spring Game. There's no block M, but the helmets are (obviously) visible.
