B10 Hoops Chaos - PSU beats #4 Iowa

Submitted by xtramelanin on

Mates,

Just checking hoops scores and incredibly, PSU beat Iowa 79-75 in a game played at State College.   PSU had a  12-13 record, 3-9 in the B10 before the game.  How did that happen?  And does this give Michigan some sliver of light that they might be able to upset Iowa last game of the regular season?

How did we "luck out" against Purdue?  We were 5-20 from downtown, not exactly a banner shooting performance.

I do think we need LeVert back because it seems like Walton is hitting the wall.  If we get him back we'll be a different team.

Unfortunately this isn't the first time a #4 ranked team has lost to a bad PSU team in a 3/4 empty Bryce Jordan Center in February.

Yeah, maybe if we can actually win one. Getting all the way there just to lose is the worst feeling in the world.

Can you imagine how different the perception of our program is if instead of being 1-5 in championship games, we're 3-3? 5-1?!

...something would be different.  I don't think we vacate anything from the Fab Five years and basically force the NCAA to provide proof of these Ed Martin payments to Webber while he was still playing basketball here.

The NCAA says we didn't play Basketball for 8 years.

People with brains know otherwise. They can put all the little asterisks next to the results, but they happened.

They can take down banners, but they can't erase them being up there in the first place.

And if we're so ashamed of what happened during that period, why is Chris Webber's picture in displays inside Crisler?

I've been saying this for years, every time somebody says "We're a football school, we don't have tradition in basketball, we'll never be a premier program because we don't have the history, etc etc etc..."

If we're .500 in national championship games, we're one title ahead of sparty.  No one is confusing us with Kentucky at that point, but we're gonna be thought of as a dual sport school and not just a football school that makes a run once in a while.  Two games does that for us.

Now if we had managed to win five or even six of those games, I don't care what the NCAA says about the Fab 5 years, you're talking about a consensus top 10 program historically at that point.  All by just winning four or five more games.

Now sure, there are a handful of schools that might be viewed similarly if a couple more breaks had gone their way.  My point is that we're THAT CLOSE to being viewed as a top tier program, so all the naysayers that keep insisting that it's not worth our time to be emotionally invested in Michigan basketball need to knock it off.  There's no reason to be that much of a pessimist.  We're one elite coach away from being right there with anyone in the country on a regular basis.  The money is there, the brand is there, the fan/alumni base is there, the national recruiting reach and local talent hotbed are both there.

Iowa is simply coming back to the mean. College teams who aren't loaded with NBA talent just can't stay at a high level all year. Looking ahead this team has an excellent chance to get Iowa in the season finale.

That's not necessarily true.  There have been national championship teams that barely produced any NBA players.

Iowa does seems to generally fade late in seasons, but I think that may have more to do with McCaffery's tough approach than anything.

The best time to play Iowa is at the end of the season.  The last few years, they have struggled at the ends of seasons.

...giving Michigan five top 100 wins. I think the Iowa game is the most winnable non-NW game left, simply because it's at home. I don't see Michigan winning at Wisconsin or Maryland.

Huge. If PSU can stay in top 100 that's 2 more good wins because Michigan has beaten them twice. NC State is right on the fringe of the top 100 also, so UM could add 3 top 100 wins without playing a game. That would give them 6 top 100 wins including 3 over the top 25. That would easily be a tourney resume.

they suddenly showed up against that monster-sized purdue team, then of course disappeared against ohio.    can they show up and stay strong, or was that just a little blip when they played well on saturday?

Motivating players in the pros is up to the players.

Motivating players in high school and college is up to the coach.

This should've been easy for Beilein and staff:

A. They just knocked off a top 15 team.
B. They're playing a hated rival.
C. They were technically a PSU upset over Iowa away from playing for a share of the B1G title if they win out.

If that doesn't motivate this team, I don't know what will.

well Walton will be a sr next year, and if it hasn't happened yet, not sure it will. It seems like that intensity and leadership is more innate then acquired. Hopefully Simpson can help in that department next year, but seems tough for a fr to take the reins right away. soph year seems to be when that clicks.

I was hoping Doyle could bring that - he has the intensity. just needs the hands to get out on the court more.

What a game stolen by Duke tonight. I hate them but admire their coaching and team toughness mentally and physically. Like MSU soon as you think you have them down they find ways to win.

Isaiah Washington is a local kid and my son spent a lot of time with him. It's nice to see him off the bench and playing real minutes. We root for him, not so much PSU.
