Austin Hatch SVP Star of the Night (SportsCenter)
Just in case anyone missed it, Austin Hatch was Scott Van Pelt's Star of the Night on SC tonight. I don't know how to embed from an ESPN website, can someone please embed. This might have been mentioned or posted on another thread, but I think recognition for this young man's heart and perseverance deserves its own. Go Austin and Go Blue!

That he's alive, playing basketball and going to college is amazing. His perseverance sets a pretty great example. Good on you Austin.

He IS his immediate family. He lost his siblings, mother, stepmother and father.
Kid has some kind of backbone.
All the best to you Austin!

This is a great story that transcends sports. It is great to see Austin Hatch be able to live a small portion of his dreams already. I still think it's amazing that he has recovered so much of his function. I still think the same as I did when hearing of the tragedy: I hope he can live a normal life and get a degree from the University of Michigan. Anything else is a bonus.
Honestly, the "bonus" I am hoping for the most is that he fulfills his dream of becoming Dr Austin Hatch someday. If Dr Austin Hatch graduates from the University of Michigan Medical School, it will be one of the best "basketball" stories ever.

Wow, unbelievable!

all around.

They chopped up the moment and edited out the crowd so the twit could hear himself talk.
Honestly, what is it about our culture having to overcompensate for everything? Let the moment speak for itself.

I know what you mean. It's like when people complain about things just for the sake of complaining.

If he ever hits the winning shot in a B1G game in his career, he's going to set a record for the most offers in one night from potential girlfriends. And because there's nothing wrong with it, may be a few boy offers thrown in there too.

Didn't realize he was so close on the missed shot, but the quiet of the crowd waiting for it, the mixed sound of disappointment at the miss and cheers for the fact that he was even there to be so close, and then the actual make. Dramatic writing students, take note.
And to think it's actually real.

Here is a post game interview...
Love that he didnt want to force a shot and seemed adamant about playing within the offense, "Oh its Austin Hatch, he's been through a tragedy, so we want him to shoot it, no...."

Great kid...shows in his post-game comments (above). Every time I hear the story it's still as unbelievable as the first time I've heard it. Truly amazing that he's been able to persevere in the face of such tremendous adversity. BRAVO, Austin!!
Also, Ace's post-game write-up was quoted on ESPN this morning. Specifically: "Words cannot describe the feeling of watching a man who's twice fallen from the sky get to fulfill at least some small part of his big dream."
Well done, Ace. Glad to see that the great writing on this site continues to get more attention.

Never happened before. Will never happen again.
But, I have a feeling that Austin will be giving us many more special moments in the years to come.
Well done young man.
