Attendance was really bad last night

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Announced attendance of 9,981 and it wasn't even close to that.

Especially bad for a Challenge game. 3rd worst-crowd for one here ever with the two ones that were worse being in the Ellerbe era and Beilein's first year where we won 10 games.

Football season still on the brain? Only averaging 10,074 through 4 games and that number will likely drop to 4 figures with the thrilling game on Saturday against Kennesaw State.

And let's put things in perspective:

"Athletics doing stupid things" is a significant increase in PSDs or ticket prices, student section hijinks, giant video advertising boards, etc.

"Athletics doing stupid things" is not "they scheduled a field hockey game at a time when I can't go."

"Don't schedule second or third tier sports at the same time as football, and don't schedule hockey and basketball at the same time" aren't insane or entitled requests, if it's actually feasible to avoid that scheduling.

We're not talking about WD's convenience here - no one can attend both hockey and basketball reliably, because multiple home games are on top of each other. That's going to hurt attendance for one or both, because it can't do otherwise.

And field hockey vs football? Essentially nobody who didn't give birth to one of the ladies on the team is a fan of field hockey but not football.

If Crisler wasn't consistently half full, all the time, no matter when. The huge game last year against Maryland, there were large patches of empty seats when the camera panned the crowd.

The attendance has always been very poor for Michigan basketball. The interest grew when the team got better, but prior to that when I attended a regular Big Ten game against an average foe, I coud walk to the lower bowl and pick a seat.

Shit, I remember taking homework to Crisler to do during pregame, halftime, and timeouts when I had upper-bowl tickets as a freshman. Where's the dedication!?!?

But, really, this is the accurate take--no one cared about the games before January because they were all at goofy times (like those weird 9:30PM tipoffs for the ACC/B1G challenge that happened a couple times) and/or against teams no one cared about (Athletes In Action!). And during fall semester crunch time.

Well you are misinformed, because they basically have.

Dropped 800 upper bowl seats this year. Now only about 750 upper bowl seats for students. Used to be 2000 upperbowl seats for students back at it's peak. (Lower bowl seats 1000).

To be perfectly honest I haven't watched a single basketball game yet this year because I've been very busy with work and the end of the semester and yes "Football is still on my mind". Combine that with the fact that basketball is almost unwatchable at this point because of refs and we are a mediocre team and that's what happens.

I think attendance from non students wasn't bad, but the student attendance was weak. However it's hard to blame them considering season tickets are still inexplicably $200. I showed up at game time and got a seat in the bleachers, which usually only happens for cupcake games

I don't mind paying that much, but I am really into basketball for many others that is not the case. Off the top of my head Purdues tickets are 105$ and you get football and basketball. Obviously football isn't worth much, but Purdue's basketball has certainly been better than ours over the last few years

But yes, that makes $200 seem high.  maybe $125?  When I was a student, they had split season options and you would get about 8 games.  It was perfect for the student who had a long walk to the game and couldn't go to every one or had a lot of homework. (fine.  I was partying.  I liked to party, OK??? Dont judge me!)

I suspected there may be a bit of an attendance issue as the athletic department has been sending me more emails than usual regarding basketball ticket purchases.  Hopefully after the holidays the team gets on a roll.

Exactly.

To be perfectly honest, I could give a shit about the national championship.

How have we, as the winningest program in the history of the Big Ten, not even been to Indianapolis to play for the title ONCE?! That's fucked up and embarassing. We choked in 2011  and 2012 under Hoke and now in 2016 under Harbaugh.

Wisconsin has been like 5 times, MSU has gone 3 times, even Penn State and Nebraska have gone. It's a joke.

I want to beat Ohio State and win the Big Ten; then we will worry about a national championship.

Every year is our year with Harbaugh, yes. But, were not going to have every starter getting all big ten honors every year and we may never have a defense as good as this years. On another day this team curb stomps osu in Columbus

Oh that's rich that you of all people are calling out others for being ungrateful when you're the guy who is always first to lead the campaign for a Michigan coach to be fired once they fail to meet your standard.

What the hell does one thing have to do with another? Do other teams around the country experience big loss in ticket sales for basketball after a tough loss in football? Or are Michigan fans just weird that way and very bad at supporting basketball? I saw at least five minutes of almost every Challenge game this year. Our crowd was so much worse than every other one it wasn't even funny.
