Athlon's Top 25 Pre-Spring Big Ten Players: Four from U-M

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on

We love lists! Athlon Sports has ranked the top 25 players in the Big Ten. It says this is a "Pre-Spring" list, so I'm not sure if it includes incoming freshmen. Because obviously, Rashan Gary would be Nos. 1, 2 and 3 if that were the case.

Anyway, we have four players on the list: No. 3 Jourdan Lewis, No. 4 Jabrill Peppers, No. 14 Jake Butt and No. 16 Chris Wormley. Plus a few on the "Others to Watch" list.

Doc Brown needs to watch every move JT Barrett makes and figure out how to pressure him into passing mistakes while still containing him on the ground.  He's their entire team this year on offense.  They go as he goes.  Slow him down and we can finally win in Columbus for the first time since 2000.

I was hoping that Dr. Blitz would stick myself, but then it seems like the Back To The Future reference was pulled not five minutes after he was announced as the new defensive coordinator, which was going to happen anyway. Either way, it is a not a bad nickname at all.

I've got a pretty strong feeling that OSU's offense will be far more than a one man show by the time we come to town in November. Sure, you don't just replace guys like Ezekiel Elliott and Braxton Miller, but Meyer can just keep plugging in more 4-5 star athletes across the field and they will be playing at a high level by season's end.

It's like 2014. They looked like shit against VaTech and then were worldbeaters in the playoffs,

Well said.  OSU is exhibit A for how this game is played between the ears.  They will be hungry this year.  Talent is not an issue.  They have two tune-ups before road dogs at Oklahoma.  Tough game, but I'll take OSU and the points right now.

While I'm at it...our D will be scary under Brown, and O'Korn to Chesson deep will be a real thing.  The Game will be two top-5 teams this year.

Athlon means competition in Greek.  Fun fact for the day.

Like the words "Amen" and "Huh" the name "Harbaugh" has universal acceptance, recognition and significance--no matter the language barrier...  Among the wiser, competing life forms, it is synonymous with fear and dread.  Among the foolhardy, it produces a permanent ringing betwixt the ears from banging one's head against the wall of inevitable supremacy.  Yeah, that's Harbaugh in any language.

Great to see Peppers and Lewis near the top of the list, but how is Butt not higher?  He was one of the best in the country at his position.  I'm also surprised to see Glasgow wasn't on there and that LJ Scott is ahead of Deveon Smith who didn't even appear.  They had similar numbers last year, but when you consider how many offensive weapons MSU loses around him compared to how much UM brings back, that surprises me.  I think Smith has a 1,000 yard year and Scott has trouble finding space.

I can see that, but Smith has had regular increases in yards in each of his first three years (as well as carries) and also has basically the same offensive line for 3 seasons and returns 4 of his 5 lineman blocking for him next year, all offensive weapons around him, and what seems like an upgrade at QB.  Smith also finished the season on a high note with a good game against a very good defense.  Scott on the other hand loses two all conference o-lineman in Allen & Conklin, an all-conference QB, and an all conference WR.  Call me surprised if Scott rushes for more yards than Smith next year.

Yeah, Glasgow not being on there, not even on the honorable mention list, is a joke.

Chesson averaged 7 catches for 126 yards and 1.5 TDs over his last four games.  If you're projecting for next season, I don't see how that doesn't factor in.  His numbers were barely worse than Westerkamp over the entire season; if you take into account Chesson's development it shouldn't be close.

I may be biased, but Peppers should be #1 in my book. Last year was his first full season, he played offense, defense and special teams. He's the best athlete on most likely a top 10 team. He is only going to get better this year....

So how did King get out of the state and end up at Iowa? Dude is an All-American, from the state and will be lining up against UM this year....was he just under rated coming out of HS? Did he have a connection to the Hawkeyes?

Well good scouting and/or development by Iowa. I mean if he's really better than J Lewis then that's one hell of a find on their part. It will be interesting to see how UM's WRs match up with him.
