Assistant Coach Rumor Compilation Thread

Submitted by Indonacious on

Aside from recruiting, this will probably be the boards biggest obsession going forward and I have found it difficult to keep track of everything floating around. What I have seen the board and in other articles is below. One thing to note is that obviously Offense is Harbaugh's side of the ball, so I'm sure he will have signficant input there and may likely be the play-caller too, so the coaches he brings in may be more geared towards other aspects of coaching perhaps.

OC: Wheatley (Bills RB Coach), Andy Moeller (Browns OL Coach)
Other Offensive Coaches: Vince Marrow (Kentucky TE Coach), Reggie Davis (49er OL Coach, NFL TE), John Morton (49er WR Coach), Ronald Curry (49er Off Asst)

DC: DJ Durkin (ex-DC of florida), Mattison, Lance Anderson (DC at stanford)

Interesting notes about Mattison. Durkin was his Graduate Assistant at Notre Dame; Mattison worked under Jack Harbaugh and with John Harbaugh with the Ravens. Also, he served as a co-dc with Charlie Strong so he has done it before. I'm pretty sold that he is on board for the year - at least.

I'm sure there is a bunch more out there that can help fill the void left by the hopefully foregone conclusion of Harbaugh's arrival.

These are all the same names that have been mentioned in several posts the last few days, but hey, let's do it again tomorrow, and the next day, and the next day, and the next day, until Jimmy works it out. This is fun. Welcome home Jimmy!

Schofield didn't play at all for Rodriguez, and Lewan was a redshirt freshman in 2010. Michigan was using a mish-mash of spare parts for Rodriguez's first couple years, and Molk had some injury issues.

I can't see that many guys on the offensive side of the ball. I doubt you see both Curry and Morton on the staff. I also have a hard time believing that you see 3 of the top DC's in the country on the same staff. Too many chiefs and not enough Indians. I believe Mattison will be on staff because he has two more years on his contract. He's worked with Durkin and the Harbaugh family in the past.

I don't see that many guys jumping from the NFL to college. I think we may be getting ahead of ourselves if we think that Harbaugh, Wheatley, Moeller, Morton, Davis, and Curry would all give up potential NFL gigs for Michigan. A few of those guys have Michigan connections, so I would understand those. I'll grant that Michigan seems a little more willing to go after a high-priced coaching staff at this point than during the last two coaching searches, but this is also a school that has employed Adam Braithwaite in recent years. We can't expect 10 coaches who are at the top of their game.

I wouldn't sell him short in his ability to get some people we might not expect to come here.

He didn't bring a lot of guys from San Diego to Stanford, from Stanford to SF and I doubt we'll see too many coming from SF either. That alone will be a big change from what we're used to seeing in AA.

Would be so awesome.

QB: Jim Harbaugh (Head Coach)
RB: Tyrone Wheatley (Co-Offensive Coordinator)
WR: Erik "Soup" Campbell
TE: Vince Marrow
OL: Andy Moeller (Co-Offensive Coordinator)
DL: Greg Mattison (Co-Defensive Coordinator)
LB: DJ Durkin (Co-Defensive Coordinator)
CB: Roy Manning
S: Curt Mallory
Special Teams: Mike Mallory

....holy shit that staff is the best in the country.

Rumor mill has $3.5M-$4M for staff salary promised to Harbaugh.

A lot depends on salaries of the 2 coordinators - and if Mattison is part of that bulk #.  Last year we were in the $3.5M range.  Durking made $500K last year at UF.  Could see him going up to 600-650K (it's a good life).  Mattison is near to $800K,  You assume the OC is going to be $700K.  So if Mattison is included you are already talking $2.1Mish to those 3.  If Mattison is not part of the pool (maybe UM will count it as a sunk cost) that gives Harbaugh more leeway.

But I mean at this point if you are committing $6.5-$8M a year (whatever the actual # is going to be) I dont think you are pinching pennies for his assistants/position coaches.

That and UTL are probably the only 2 positive legacies of Brandon.

Given the prestige of Michigan (and I'd like to think it's still a prestigious job) along with Jim Harbaugh being our coach, I'm pretty confident that we'll have a very solid staff. Perhaps not, as Magnus suggests, an all-NFL staff but talented and worlds better than what we've suffered through for the past 7 years.

Any room for Hart in a low level position on the UM staff? He appears to have done A+ work with WMU this year; he was the primary recruiter and coach for Franklin, who was among the best freshman RB in the country.

I'd love to see Hart on the staff eventually (for many reasons, not the least of which would be to troll MSU), given his comments about Harbaugh back in 2007, I think there is some serious bridge-mending that would have to be done first.

One interesting guy not named here - and probably not coming since he is USC OL coach, Tim Drevno.  Guy started with Jim at USD, followed him to Stanford, followed him to San Fran and then for some reason last year jumped back into college.  Obviously he too has always been in CA for his career and is at a premium program but based on the OL development at Stanford with a bunch of 3 stars and the good OL SF had until this year, that guy would be very interesting.  Obviously he overlaps with Moeller but it is encouraging that some bright minds seem to be found by Jim.  That is probably the most encouraging thing - among many - these position coaches are so vital and overlooked.

Three thoughts on the upcoming new assistants:

1. They will be a significant upgrade from our past two staffs.

2. Because of this we will need to get used to them leaving to take promotions elsewhere.

3. When somebody fucks up (and they will) don't expect Harbaugh to cover for them in his pressers by telling us they are beyond awesome and to not believe our lying eyes. They will be held accountable for results both good and bad.

...but it hasn't gained much traction.

I'd be all for Campbell coaching the WRs. He was a GREAT coach.

I had Koger as a TE coach just as a leftover spot, but I'm sure Harbaugh has someone better.

It's funny that people are mentioning Morrow, because he was one of the reason Mark Stoops was in my top 4/5.
