The Arrogance of the Defensive Gameplan

Submitted by George Pickett on

How many fucking times are you going to put McCray on an explosive RB in man coverage? How many times are you going to put Kinnel in man coverage on PSU's best receiver?  How many times are you going to put a two-star safety on an island on 3rd down?

Don Brown is great, but we need to stop acting like every one of our players is capable of executing every assignment. Tonight's gameplan was a product of massive arrogance, and it failed miserably.

Obviously, you have very little football knowledge.  Do you want to keep losing, season after season.  Franklin and Dantonio were much further along at this point of season 3 with much less talent.  Meyer was ahead of Harbaugh in season one.  Harbaugh is not a good coach.  He needs to go.

It didn't look like the defense was dictating much of anything tonight. Maybe don't blitz up the middle every time in the first quarter? Mix up the man and zone more! News flash, if you do the same thing long enough, opposing coaches will figure it out! (No matter how big and stong you think you are)

with the thread.  Don Brown is a great, not good, but great coordinator but his scheme was thoroughly exposed tonight.  Penn State had 2 weeks to break down the weaknesses of the defense whenever we were in certain looks, and over and over again there was a safety getting Moss'd by Hamilton or Barkley simply outrunning McCray.  The biggest disappointment was the defense did not even consider McSorely as a runner.  The ends were crashing down, the linebackers were flowing with every step Barkley took.

With all that said anyone that thinks we would be anywhere near respectability these last couple years without Brown on the sideline is absolutely nuts.  Sometimes you have to tip your cap and just admit you were outcoached and the better team won.  This was never supposed to be our year anyway.

Looked like the game plan was predicated on assuming they could get to McSorely with the rush. That didn't happen often or as quickly as needed. Was hoping that knocking down McSorely numerous times would reduce his effectiveness, but he was "on" pretty much the whole game.

The backside LB or Safety overcommitting allowing big cutbacks is something that hurt Michigan on the first TD, and has been a problem all season. This is what happens when you rely on aggressive pressure and man to man coverage. Sometimes it doesn't work. When there are m/m mismatches in coverage, they need help over the top, which wasn't there.

PSU had four athletes Michigan was unable to adequately match up with.

I really don't understand don brown at times. All season teams come out in spread while we still in our base defense. Mind boggling I say. Then he wants the safeties to check wrs lol it's almost laughable smh. What's the point of recruiting dbs and not play while teams are coming out in spread. Crazy!!! The blitz is only effective if everyone knows they have a damn man to check. Teams are running simple pass plays yet we still have no nickel and dime packages. Come on don brown stop being stubborn like Jim. Pleaseee

I have a hard time attacking Don Brown at this juncture. He did lose almost his entire defense last year and we would likely be in a lot worse shape without him. It hurts too, if you don't have an offense that can manage a few drives. If it was arrogance, I hope with time and game film he sees his mistakes.

Why can’t anyone on this thread understand that Don Brown can simultaneously be awesome (maybe best DC ever?) and still have had a terrible game plan tonight? Only a complete idiot would want him fired, but his game plan was awful (as others have pointed out by putting McCray and Tyree on islands, while assuming Barkley isn’t worthy of being th #1 rb in the nation)?

He runs a system. Want to get back to the number 1 defense? Your players have to learn the system. You will have games where it doesn’t work out. Don Brown has more experience than everyone on this board combined. I’m fine with letting him do what he does.

Since he’s been here.... you just saw what older more explosive athletes can do when they make you miss on those islands. The game plan was fine. PSU just executed we didn’t pretty simple really. But let’s lose our minds shall we?????

after PSU. The players are fine. That last night was a simple scheme issue. I love Don Brown, but a a saftey can not cover a teams best WR and McCray can not be in pass coverage with the best player on the field. They exploited match-ups with formations and motions and UM did not adjust. Which is rare, but still unaccptable.

I felt bad for McCray, because he was being asked to do something he clearly couldn't physically do. He was repeteadly being put in a position to fail (much like our safeties continually finding themselves in man on Hamilton out of the slot...).

The Barkley bobble TD had McCray on Barkley with Glasgow over the top. CUMONG MAN, we all knew what was coming - we called it before the play even happened while we were watching - and if that's happening that is really bad.

McCray would have been a great thumper under Lloyd. He'll play out the season and I will appreciate him.

Coaches need to the fix the issue that MSU, Indiana, and PSU have all successfully done against Michigan (isolating S or LB in space against player then attacking that match up successfully).

I dont think its as simple as saying "I dont want this guy matched up with that guy".  At a high level yes, I think having Barkley matchup up with McCray in coverage is a bad idea, and I think Brown would agree with that.  But the PSU offensive coaches are looking at our defensive scheme and figuring out ways to get the matchups they want (through formations, motion, assignments, etc.).  Its going to happen a couple times a game where an offensive coach manages to get the right play called which results in the matchup they want.

If one of the mgocoaches would like to respond I'd welcome your thoughts, but I think its unfair to Don Brown to see a couple touchdowns with a bad matchup and assume he was outcoached.

That was a very ohio state offensive game plan.

Also frustrating that we cant do the same thing they do with gesicki / Gentry...
