Arizona QB Brewer granted release, 2 years of eligibility

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Interesting.

Connor Brewer was in the class of 2012. The one class that Michigan infamously did not take a QB. Brewer was offered by Michigan.

According to Brewer's Rivals profile, he was a 4-star QB and the #10 pro style QB in the nation.

Originally a Texas Longhorn, he transferred to Arizona and sat out a season.

Brewer is 6'2, 206.

Those two years of eligibility look nice. Do want or?

Arizona QB Connor Brewer received a release from his scholarship to transfer today. Brewer will have a degree and 2 years to play.

To be fair, I changed my signature to that when after every single semi-negative comment I posted about Hoke was met with "BUT, BUT, BUT....BRADY HOKE IS THE FUCKING MAN, HOW DARE YOU SAY SOMETHING BAD!!!" I decided to just say fuck it, and go with that. Because despite mounds of evidence to the contrary people thought Hoke was awesome and shat roses.

So 1) I told y'all so, and 2) you're right. Its time to change it.

LOL.

Dumb logic.

Look, not every guy you sign, recruit, convince to transfer, etc. is going to work out. Part of the goal of increasing the number of players at your position is to increase competition. Maybe Brewer/Braxton Miller/Kevin Hogan wouldn't end up being the starter at Michigan, but they could at least be in the mix or challenge Morris, Speight, etc. Who's to say that Forcier's presence didn't help spur Tavita Pritchard a little bit in improving the team? And maybe it didn't help, but it certainly does not appear to have hurt them.

Has he done anything at the collegiate level?  If Harbaugh sees something he likes in him, then I'm behind it all the way, but it's hard to say given the fact that he hasn't played at all for the past few years.

Not sure I get this. The high schoolers we offer scholarships to have also not done anything at a collegiate level. If the kid is deemed a better player than who we already have (quarterbacks that have themselves not proven anything at the college level) then there should be no question about whether or not he is offered a scholarship.

Is redshirt even an issue anymore?  Wilton Speight redshirted last year.  We'll have enough QBs to avoid burning Malzone's redshirt in any case (unless he earns playing time on his own merit, in which case, fine).  Unless you're trying to redshirt Shane (unlikely, even with a transfer QB).

We already have enough QBs around to keep the bench warm, we need one that can play.

but I can't help but think that if Shane can be talked into taking a RS he should do it unless he has an incredible, quick and obvious improvement in his overall QB development. If we can get ANY viable transfer in (Hogan, etc) to play a year and compete the next if he has more then a year of eligibility, we should do it. Again, only if the transfer is a viable QB (average-above average+) & not a body. We have bodies but Shane should be a RS SO right now. Somehow giving him or getting him to take a RS would help every party in the long run as I think it's very likely at this point that he's using all of his eligibility at this point, 4 years or 5. If we can get a decent hired gun for just one year it will help our QB corp a ton!

I love the idea of redshirting Shane, also, but it seems exceedingly unlikely. It needs an obvious starter to appear, for Speight to be a tolerable 2nd string, and for Morris to be OK giving up a starting role and any 2nd string snaps. Any of these might be possible, all 3 seems very unlikely.

I remember when Alex Smith got hurt and they had to turn to Kapernick who did really well in his absence. Harbaugh had a really difficult time benching a healthy Smith and was hedging all over the place even though he knew Kapernick was better. Once he picks a QB at Michigan he is going to ride with him.

Jim spoke to Peyton directly for about an hour on exactly one day. He never offered a contract to Manning as Manning was literally not bending in his desires. They were: A team that could win immediately (check) & to run "his system" where Peyton is basically the OC as he has been since his rookie year. That was not a "checked box" for SF so both moved on. The fact is that Manning runs the show, always has & always will. He's had guys like Moore, Cutcliffe that have improved his game but any team he's been on since his Sophomore year at Tennessee has had an OC only in name. Manning was the UT OC at age 20, the Colts OC from rookie to release & the Broncos OC right now. Draw up plays - great. Name the plays - wonderful. Call the play - just get ready to have Peyton not run it whenever he wants & to career success. He's the OC & that wasn't going to fit in SF. Yes, Jim spoke with Peyton but he didn't lie because no contract was ever offered or suggested by Jim as both knew it was respectfully not a fit for either. Would Jim had signed a Peyton willing to run a system designed by his staff? Absolutely, IMO! Peyton is just his own system & wanted a team ready to win that would allow him to run the offense as he saw fit. Nothing wrong with that on either side as Manning is, IMO, the most independently mentally efficient QB to ever play. His freshman year at Tennessee was the last time he wasn't his own OC. Nobody lied.

Yesterday I was talking with a nice kid from the San Clemente High track team about the college football championship.  I mentioned that I went to Michigan, and he goes. "Yeah, Harbaugh.  He calls my friend Sam (Elite 11 San Clemente quarterback Sam Darnold) every day, and tells him, "Come play at Michigan.  You're going to be my next Colin Kaepernick."  This kid goes on, "I think he should go there.  Harbaugh's the best coach, with all his connections, to get him into the pro's.  But he likes USC."

I had to agree with the young mans sentiment.  Sam Darnold, however, remains committed to USC as of now.

Seemed like an interesting glimpse of a high school athletes view of Jim Harbaugh.

People seem to be defining loyalty to current players as a promise that they will be given the opportunity to play. When guys sign a LOI, the only thing they are promised from a playing time standpoint is that they will be given the chance to compete for a spot. Why is bringing in a transfer seen as unfair to the current players?

The quarterbacks that are currently on the roster are as unproven as Brewer. So I don't see how his lack of experience is an argument for not pursuing him.

If we can get him, why not? Obviously it looks like an uphill battle with any of the current QBs.

This dude looks good from his highlights. I don't hate the idea of getting him at Michigan.  Who is this going to hurt?  Michigan fans' feelings of who they think "deserves" the job?  Nobody has earned it.  I like this idea

Football players are on campus year round, so I would expect them to be ahead of their peers who go home and/or have internships during the Summer. Couple that with some credits from AP classes in High School, and it doesn't surprise me at all to see someone graduate in 2.5 years.
