Is anyone rooting for MSU to win the Rose Bowl?

Submitted by Erik_in_Dayton on

Is anyone rooting for MSU in the Rose Bowl?  I suppose you could make a case that we ought to.  The Big Ten's national perception is really bad, of course (thanks in part to ESPN's intentional submarining of the conference, IMO, but that's perhaps another post).  A victory by MSU might have a positive ripple effect for the rest of the conference next year, especially when it's time to select the four teams for the Kodiak Smokeless Tobacco College Football Playoff Presented by Lloyd's of London and Kia Motors.

I know that I simply can't bring myself to root for MSU, though I have to respect what they've done with their program.  I remember being a kid and seeing MSU go to the 1988 Rose Bowl and thinking that something just wasn't right about the situation, and I feel pretty much the same way now.  Sure, they've earned the right to be there, but just a surely, the football gods must be offended by this current state of affairs.  It is not right, in some fundamental way, like a household in which two dogs watch TV and use kitchen appliances while humans scamper around on the floor begging for scraps.

But anyway, is anyone rooting for MSU?  I don't blame you if you are.  As I said, it makes some sense.

I'll be rooting for State.  I love Michigan, grew up in Ann Arbor rooting for them since I was 5.  I also have a brother, grandmother, and uncle who went to MSU.  I have no problem rooting for MSU here...  I won't be wearing green or loudly cheering, but I want them to win.

With that said, I would have a bit of an evil grin on my face if they pull a spartyno moment on the national stage...  My feelings are weird...  Don't ask.

I don't really care at this point. If they win it helps big ten perception. If they lose we get schadefreude.

And saying them winning won't help big ten perception, a big ten team hasn't won the rose bowl 14 years. It would help.

Married a MSU grad and they are big state fans.  The were lovin them some big KSU blowout. True sparties always root against Michigan and they always hope for the worse when it comes to Michigan I just can't stand their fans!

Even if our program becomes an elite program in the B1G in the next five years, the B1G as a whole will still suck over the same time frame. Probably longer. Thus, to hell with worrying about the conference's stature.

I hope Stanford whips the shit out of MSU.

I won't root against them, because that's what petty Spartans do to us. I'd like to have the big ten show up...but I don't want to hear it from Spartan fans. I actually have received less crap from MSU fans now that we are slowly fading into irrelevance however. Anyway, call me conflicted.

it may be cause for people to say that OSU and MSU are simply the class of a bad league. Which. . . ouch.

Nonetheless, some obscure part of my MSU-hatin' ass wants them to win; what can I say? I'm a UM grad from four generations of them in the immediate family, several of my cousins went to MSU, and I STILL somehow have developed some respect for them over the last few years. MSU was decimated by the recession and budget cuts while UM rode high, and they have retained a lot of their scholastic integrity despite it; in ecology (my field) I am increasing seeing work attributed to MSU scholars. I just really do respect what they have managed.

No way in hell would I root for MSU!!!  The MAU fans at the office are already incredibly annoying, winning the Rose Bowl would take them to another level.

Think about this, if MSU wins convincingly and Bama loses with Auburn winning on a fluke, it's feasable that MSU could get some AP votes for #1 overall.  They could very easily finish #2 and be #1 in a least a few writer's eyes.  I don't think we want Ohio State and Michigan State both contending for National Titles.

MSU getting their ass kicked only further cements the reputation of Big Ten football being far beneath the level of other major conferences. It gives coaches of other conferences more ammunition in recruiting.

The poor reputation of Big Ten football is preventing many 4 and 5 star players from coming to Big Ten teams (including Michigan). Obviously Peppers is the exception.

I can imagine the future with the same type of offensive and defensive performance except in Maize and Blue uniforms.  Otherwise said, Stanford is the prototype for what I would like Michigan to become.  Also I had a chance to go to Stanford for a graduate degree program.  There was zero recruitment, but eventually I got a TA gig with UM as a scholarship player LOL.

Um's loss in the Copper bowl all trolling having a great time in LA with their jetlag being wide awake at 230 am thru 430 am our time. I know it was a bunch of trolls. Having a blast talking about Michigans loss calling the coaches fat and the program a shambles needing to fire all them. They were saying the "Green and White will prevail and " show some guts" and not emberrass the B1G. It was fucking sickening. I know if they lose, I can only pray they do, I will be the ugliest troll, making their site unreadable, if there is a Sparty website. You know they were Spartans they have no idea what to do in Pasedena after 8:00 pm PST they have never been there before. Go Cardinals!!! beat our little brothers senseless.

you forgot Shane and Green, and a few others I can't think of off hand not to mention the ones the Buckeyes get. So don't worry the B1G will be just fine with a little brother loss

A very close family friend died suddenly on Sunday and his son (who is a great kid) goes to MSU. So, yes, I will now be rooting for MSU to bring just a little light into his life and give him a happy halfway distraction for three hours during this terrible time for him.

I hope MSU wins. The B10 needs a little perception boost. Lord knows next year only stands to look worse as Rutgers and Maryland (both of whom lost their bowl games) join up.

That said, I'm certainly not going to sit here and actually cheer for them. And I'm not going to boo Stanford. If MSU gets whipped, I will probably laugh hysterically and enjoy bitching about how they embarrassed the conference. Although I won't go all facebook with that shit, since we basically did, too.

As for OSU... the ONLY time I ever hope they win (but again, never actively rooting for them) is if it specifically serves Michigan in some way. To see Urban end his season with two losses would cheer me greatly.

Does anybody else think that Stanford is where Hoke wants Michigan to be? They are the most manball of all the manball teams. I gotta say, it doesn't sound so bad if he can pull it off.

A victory by MSU might have a positive ripple effect for the rest of the conference next year...

I don't think this is a plausible scenario. One or two teams usually do not boost the conference perception as a whole. See: FSU, Clemson, & the ACC and Louisville & the AAC.

From a reccruiting standpoint, MSU winning would not help Michigan or any of the other Big Ten teams at all and I know the OP is well aware of that.

Now, MSU winning can't hurt the public perception of the Big Ten, but what would help everyone out is if more Big Ten teams actually made some bowl games and then won said bowl games. The conference needs more good coaches, plain and simple, and the only way to get them is to actually spend some of that revenue that the Big Ten is dishing out to them, cause Indiana and Iowa are each one good coordinator away from being 9-10 win teams, easy.

and I could give a rip about sparty.  They are a good team, but entirely classless.  Their fans are so pathetic, and when it's all said and done, even when they beat us, they are still sparty, they are still not Michigan, and they know it.  That's what bothers them the most.  Enough said.

The worse each school in that conference looks.  With national perception a factor in bowl games placement and rankings, only a moron would root against their own conference.

If the B1G was a dominant conference and a conference team beat a non conference opponent in a bowl game?  I probably would.  I don't live in the midwest and am VERY happy to watch the B1G beat other major conference teams.

There is no way I could ever root for MSU.  As it is, their heads are as big as Lake Erie right now.  A Rose Bowl win would literally make spartan fever unbearable.  Besides, recruits are taking notice and it could ultimately come back to haunt us.  I only worry about Michigan, could care less about the conference perception and how our rivals do in bowl games...as long as they lose.

Sparty would never root for michigan. Just listen to them every time we lose in something. They take more joy in us losing so screw them. Plus winning one game is not going to make the big ten look great, it would only help msu. And that in turn hurts um.

I am neutral for MSU but I think they lose regardless. Don't see them winning the B1G next year and the Big10 is relatively weak regardless of the rest of the bowl games played.  I would love to see OSU finish 11-1, with a UM loss and be held out next year's playoff. GO CLEMSON!!

See, this is the one where I think sensible rooting suggests a slight deviation in the normal plan. I want O$U to lose, but I want Miller to have a good game. So no jail sex. I want Miller to have a good enough game to send him on his way to the pros. Playing Miller at the Horseshoe next season is something I'd rather avoid.

With no disrespect intended toward the OP, I feel that you have momentarily lost command of your senses.

HELL NO.

The question of overall conference perception versus the potential cementing of Sparty as a national player of any sort of significance is a no-brainer.

We're nowhere near being the kind of team that any playoff would be relevant for, as well, so that's another reason this is so easy to answer.

But you would prefer a world where Sparty wasn't just winning the Big Ten good, but is shown to be beating Stanford in the Rose Bowl good?

Keep Sparty as far from the mountaintop as possible, please.

This is our freaking in-state rival. We are really lucky that we're Michigan and they're Sparty, or the results of in-state recruiting would have already been dire. We're getitng close to using up our leeway on that. Sparty was in a national Nike ad campaign. I am all Stanford. Please smash Sparty back to irrelevance.

MSU provided me my second greatest joy of any college football season, watching OSU get beat, and more importantly, reveling in the wonderful grief that I know that the nastiest fans in college football were feeling watching their heroes humbled and their national championship dreams smashed.  So MSU earned at least a little bit of goodwill from me for this joy they brought.  That being said, I will feel no particular displeasure if they also are beaten.

I won't be rooting FOR them but I will not root against them either. So many MSU fans have foamed at the mouth for any and every Michigan loss and many here took them to task for that. In fact, that was one of the traits that made them "little brother" so I refuse to cheer against them.

In an ideal world Michigan State continues their trend upward and Michigan finds way to win some games and beats them most years.

Absolutely not.  What is best for Michigan?  I think Sparty getting spanked is.  A Rose Bowl Champion Sparty would likely have more ammo on the recruiting trail.  Plus, how impossibly annoying would the already annoying Spartan fans in your life be if they win?

I have a few friends at MSU who have actually been decidedly sufferable MSU fans, and I really enjoy watching their defense play shut down football. I generally want MSU and OSU to be good teams, rivalries are better when the competition is top notch. That being said, I never root for OSU.
