Angelique Chengelis Is Delusional

Submitted by TyroneButterfield on

As I was watching ESPN News today, they did a segment on UofM football practice beginning.  They interviewed Angelique, who I usually have no problems with.  She made a few good points and was generally knowledgeable about what is going on in AA.  Until.... She predicted that RichRod would need 10 wins to keep his job.

Am I the only one who thinks this is wayyyyyy off base?

...that's exactly why she said this.  What's incredible is that it is entirely at odds with her stance in this Jun 19 column:

What's good enough?

Some are more patient than others, and maybe "go right" means a 6-6 record and a bowl game. That's not exactly a lofty goal, but after bowless seasons of 3-9 and 5-7, that clearly would be improvement. Maybe going "right" means beating Notre Dame, Michigan State and Ohio State en route to a possible Big Ten championship and a BCS bowl berth.

Bottom line: Enough verbalizing in generalities. Yes, we all know Rodriguez is under pressure and this season could decide his future at Michigan. But what are the parameters that will ultimately decide that future? Beats me.

So, until someone can paint a picture for me with a specific outline of what Rodriguez needs to do to "make it work," here's a few more generalities to add to the list.

Fact: Rodriguez's Michigan team must be competitive through the fourth quarter of every game this fall.

Fact: A victory over Michigan State would be beneficial to Rodriguez's cause.

Fact: The season must play out before a determination is made, and then we'll see if Rodriguez made "it work" and had the season "go right."

Simply amazing.

I could justify her saying 9 and assign the 3 losses to OSU, PSU, and Wisky, but a season with those being the only losses won't result in his head rolling.  Unless, of course, she knows something we don't about Dave Brandon and RR's relationship.

holy sh-- batman that's a lot of wins.

unless practicegate explodes into something none of us foresees i cannot envision rr gets fired for 9 wins-   i would be ecstatic with 9 wins and ready for a natl championship in 2011.

A lot of coaches who go from 5-7 to 9-3 in one year get canned. And when you combine her logic with Andre Ware's prediction, RichRod's fate might be sealed by early October. Hell, he might get fired twice over.

Nothing but love for Angelique, but that's ridiculous.

I propose a ban on all "X says we need/will get X wins" posts.

The season is near, and there are much more important things to talk about!

For some reason that seems to be the major media meme that's developed quite recently. Yes, 10 wins would pretty much guarantee RR another year or more but to fire him for only 9 or 8?

making fun of Carr's supposed attitude towards RR, and the Angel's well-known good relationship with Carr..  Although given some of the crazy conspiracy theories that I've heard or read about lloyd's feelings on RR, it wouldn't surprise me if he set the bar really really high for RR's continued employment.

Luckily he's not making that call next year.

DB said specifically on the Huge show that putting a number on the number of wins RR needs is silly. I guess Angelique's source is that other David Brandon who has publicly stated 10 wins or RR gets drawn and quartered on the 50-yard line during the Wisconsin game.

I thought she was smarter than this, but I was wrong.

Yea its getting silly that we have to analyze everyones estimates on how many wins RR needs to stay. He could win 8 games and get fired still if Brandon doesn't like the direction RR's staff is taking the program. Lets just win em all and not worry about it.

My hairy ass is currently looking over the Michigan roster and schedule right now. I will post it's prediction, and it's "Wins RR needs" tomorrow. It will be just as relevent.

I would be shocked if Rich Rodriguez is not back for the 2011 season. Who is going to replace him? How much time will it take for that coach to get his guys? etc. Dave Brandon is a great AD, and hopefully recognizes that RR has been up against since the get-go and is just now getting to the point where can work his magic.

Hopefully we win 10 games this year and don't have to find out if AC was right.

I think 10 wins as the firing mark is absurd, but this team probably could pull off that mark if you think about it.

That's winning all the games we should win - and then winning two of at Ohio State, at Penn State, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

Wisconsin is scary this year, but they sometimes collapse mid-season and may well have done so before we even play them. If we are having a good season, this may be a much more winnable game than it looks now.

Penn St really isn't so scary.  They will probably run the ball well and play better defense than they should, but lacking an experienced quarterback and experience at the reciever position isn't a good way to build a solid team. Looks very winnable to me.

Iowa is a worse team in my opinion than they were last year.  I don't think Ricky Stanzi is that good of a QB.  Their O-Line is a bit suspect and I don't think Stanzi gets the ball out quick enough to threaten our secondary enough to totally dominate our D.  Their defense will be solid, but we nearly beat a better defense away last season, and given that we got WAY better as a team (or so I think) this offseason, I don't see why we can't win this.

Ohio State is pretty scary but I am personally of the opinion that Pryor isn't that great.  And aside from the strong defense, he's the guy that people are expecting to be the driver of Ohio State's success.  I still don't like his passing mechanics or his football smarts, and he's not so fast as to be uncatchable either.  I think on the whole this is a worse squad than Wisconsin's and I think they are going down at camp randall.  Beating them at the shoe will be tough, but if we've been having a good season it's not out of the question either.  We could have beat them last season with better control of the ball and limiting nasty turnovers on offense and I think that will be a big change through this season.  It's hard to call this game winnable because even good quarterbacks tend to be forced into nasty turnovers by Tressel Defenses, but this is by no means a guaranteed L either.

On the whole it's not inconcievable to think that we could wipe out the rest of our schedule and win 10 of these games.

That all being said, I don't think 10 wins is by all means a benchmark for him keeping his job.  A lot of things are going to decide that, and I wouldn't say anything is certain save that 6 wins or less is definately not good enough (will mean losing some games we SHOULD win if we end up beating a big name among them). Honestly I think 6 wins or less would be a dissapointment with this team anyhow and nobody here would be happy with it.

Beyond that, it will depend on all the sorts of circumstances that can effect the fortunes one way or another of any football team. 10 wins may be a decent expectation of a very good season for this team looking at the schedule, but it will by no means be the bar that is set, nor will there be any static win-count metric for him keeping his job.

Six to seven wins seems more realistic to me in 2010 given the chronic youth of this team and the major issues at LB and the secondary.

Next year the tables should be dramatically turned in UM's favor on the depth and experience front relative to the B10 competition, including new entrant Nebraska.

Whoever shows up as Michigan's HC in 2011 (assuming zero attrition if not RR), they could have one hell of a powerful, fast and experienced team on their hands.

6-7 sounds about right, and he does not need 10 to keep his job.  I hate putting a number on it, but I think 8-4 gets him another year, 7-5 makes it a toss-up, and 6-6 or worse he will be shown the door.  Here is the big question though.  Say they go 8-4 or 7-5, but they lose to MSU, OSU, and ND, does DB bring him back.  I think 7-5 or even 8-4 (even though I said it was good above) and losses to those teams makes him more likely to be fired than to be kept.

But that also means wins against preseason top-20 teams Wiscy, Iowa, and PSU.  At this point, I don't care if UM loses to OSU or, to an extent, MSU.  They just need to start winning games and making bowls.  Anyone who thinks MSU is going to really turn the tide of this rivalry needs to look at the overall records, and as for OSU, they are simply better than UM right now.  That will change, but another loss would not be heartbreaking provided the team showed some fight.

is doing his job by saying the right things and being completely unwavering in his support for Rodriguez.  But, don't be fooled by that to think that means anything other than he is doing what is best for the program and the department right now and it means anything one way or the other about Rodriguez's chances of being around after this season.

I have a friend who worked relatively closely with Brandon at Dominos and the first thing he told me when Brandon got the AD job is that he won't hesitate for a second to change things if he thinks it's in the best interest of the company.  He was willing to completely change their main product when he thought it was right, but didn't go around saying the previous product was bad until he was ready to change it.

So, basically, the thought around here that Brandon's presence is some sort of security blanket for Rodriguez is off base in my opinion.  He was a lot safer with Bill Martin who's legacy and reputation are on the line with Rodriguez.

I dunno. Brandon seems to be very shrewd. I think he is aware of what kind of turmoil it would throw our program into for the next several years if we change coaches yet again. Considering the level of talent that this team will have returning for 2011, in addition to RR's quality recruiting during two losing seasons, I think DB will err on the side of leniency if he has to make a choice regarding the head coaching job in the next offseason.

Assuming the team stays relatively healthy and there are no major distractions off the field, I think RichRod is definitely safe so long as he reaches a bowl game.

Kilgore Trout

August 10th, 2010 at 8:27 PM ^

I don't think improvement is necessarily the determining factor.  If Brandon is scheduling marquee OOC games with Alabama in Dallas, he's planning on UM being right there with the big boys soon.  I'm guessing whether or not he thinks Rodriguez can make that step is what will determine his fate.  If Brandon determines the answer is "no," then it doesn't make sense to prolong things.  I don't see how 9-4 with a nice bowl win would make him come up with that answer.

MGlobules

August 10th, 2010 at 8:11 PM ^

and keep his job if the team looks like it's improving. Book it. Brandon is behind him, knows football, and knows this team is worlds better in a year than this year. Too much invested.

Have always like Angelique, but this--frankly--surprises me.

Maybe she knows something. Correct me if I'm wrong, but she is fairly connected and doesn't have a reputation for "freeping". Maybe some benefit of the doubt thrown her way?

MH20

August 10th, 2010 at 9:31 PM ^

I really doubt she has any "inside" information.  There is no magic number that when hit will automatically trigger RR keeping his job.  This isn't a cut-and-dry situation, there are a lot of factors involved.  Frankly, I think that short of M completely falling apart again down the stretch like last season, Brandon will give RR four years to get this thing right before cutting his losses.  That's just my opinion, though.

ijohnb

of the team and provided some unique commentary, but I have been reading and listening to her for years and she really isn't an "insider" in any regard.  She is a beat reporter assigned to cover Michigan football, that is really all, so I would not look at it as her knowing something that nobody else does.

RR does not need 10 wins to keep his job. 8-4 with a win over OSU or MSU will do it, barring a historic meltdown in a bowl game or additional NCAA related difficulties.  While I think Brandon and company fear a dismal or even mediocre season, I think they fear starting from scratch even more.  Along those lines, 7-5 with a win over Sparty probably brings him back for at least another year.

Not to expect to little, but if he needs 10 wins to keep his job, he might as well start looking now.  I expect a lot of progress with this team, but come on, there is some work to do here. 10 wins and RR not only keeps his job, but is hired as GM of the Pistons, is elected Governer, has a Jimmy Johns sub named after him and gets a statue outside the Big House.

A guy on the 11 o'clock news said this same thing the other night, citing insider sources. I cursed him out for about 2 minutes after that. I don't think there is anything to it and I think that the number has been growing as we get closer to the season. If we win 8 games with a couple of important wins and maybe an upset or two, people will be reasonably happy and start calming down again.

... especially if Denard is starting and showing good skills and great potential.  Perhaps 6 wins if Devin Gardner shows flashes of brilliance.

Brandon knows that there's only a handful of coaches in the country that can really coach the read-option express.  He's got one of them.  And Brandon also knows that its going to take something along these lines to beat tOSU and the SEC.

So 10 wins Angelique?  You are usually fair, but on this one you are way, way wrong.

...this meme back:

sbell021 @chengelis btw- not sure if you heard, but according to message boards, you told ESPN that RR is fired if he wins less than 10. Yay internet

chengelis @sbell021 That is not exactly what I said. I do recall saying no magic number but 8,9,10 would help.

sbell021 @chengelis haha I know. Was just pointing out the absurdity of the internet fanbase taking part of what u said, twisting and running w/ it.

chengelis @sbell021 Oh, I know, and that's OK. That's why I love the boards. Makes it all more fun

Angelique = Good sport.

Angelique is certainly not a troll like the freep and radio are. But I think she's wrong. But just as fast I'm willing to forgive her. There's not much more people to hate when it comes to Michigan football these days. So I still consider her an ally unless she starts really messing up. You're forgiven Angelique.
