Andrew Stueber is 340 lbs

Submitted by evenyoubrutus on

I did not hear it, but reportedly Warinner was on WTKA today and stated that Andrew Stueber's weight is up to 340 pounds, at 6'7".  I guess we don't have to worry about him getting up to a playing weight by September.

To be fair, it is one of the hardest positions to fill on any football roster.  We assume, because we love UM, that any giant, high school offensive lineman would make coming to Michigan their highest priority.  I don't necessarily toss the coaching staff under the bus because they "whiffed" on guys, I just assume said high schooler has different priorities than me.

Ed Warinner does ask some guys to gain weight. Maybe he did that with Stuber.

On this video he tells the story of a 2nd string TE who he told, "Here's what you need to do; gain 35 pounds, and listen to everything I say".

Is this a good thing or bad thing?  I'm assuming neither because I normally I'd think it's bad but with new OL coach maybe it was asked to go jumbo.

Other OL news from Warriner on WTKA this morning:

- Runyan is the leading OT candidate, likely to start at either RT or LT.  JBB, Hudson, Steuber, Ulizio are the other competitors for a starting role.  None were mentioned anywhere else on the line.  They were mentioned in that order and I would read that as the current depth chart based on EW's comments. Hudson has the highest ceiling.

- Filiaga is an OG and is in the fight with Onwenu and Spanellis at RG.  Definitely sounds like Filiaga is a bit behind the other two, but he's "very talented" and seems to have settled at guard.

- Center is Ruiz, then Spanellis, then Vastardis.

- All of the OL have benefited greatly from the conditioning and nutrition staff.

- Terminology and focus have been tightened, with some terms eliminated and an effort to find a true offensive identity.

- Warriner coaches and emphasizes different techniques based on the player he is working with; Ruiz getting different coaching than Boren did at Ohio State.

The potential for a fight at RG sounds like a good kind of fight: multiple good options. This thought is mostly based on the assumption that Onwenu was ok last year and is going to improve incrementally, so anyone pushing him must also be good.

The fight at LT of course sounds like we're hoping for someone to elevate themselves to the level of "competent B1G left tackle." So we don't really know if we have one yet.

The good news is that we only have a huge question in one spot, and not in multiple spots. There's some question about QB because we haven't seen Shea yet, of course, but we expect it to be an improvement; every other position on the team seems to have good answers.

So all we need is one of Hudson or JBB to make a leap this fall (very possible, but of course not at all a given) and we're in good shape.

Onwenu was excellent last season when he identified the right guy to block.  But I think he was one of the OL who had trouble with missed assignments on stunts & twists.  Hopefully that was just a function of youth and inexperience, and he'll be much more consistent in that department going forward.

From his recruiting post:

"excellent frame. Even though he’s over 300 pounds he doesn’t have much bad weight on him. There’s still a lot of room left to fill out his frame … moves really well. He’s a great bender and is a very athletic guy … very good run blocker because he also does a good job level keeping his balance when moving forward. … great wingspan and that’s helped him a lot in pass protection. …could easily play at 320 or 330 and still be an athletic guy."

This was describing him as a highschooler.  It's fair to assert he's added significant muscle to that excellent frame in the UM weight room the past two years.  So he cuts 10 - 20 lbs by fall and he's at playing weight. He's 6'7.

This sounds positive. No need to freak out here.

From Ed - "Andrew is a very big man" ... don't count him out of the two deep at OT.  This is what I learned listening to Ed:

  • Center - Ruiz starter, with Spans as backup
  • Guard - Bredesen is a lock at LG, battle between Onwenu/Spans/Filiaga at RG
  • Tackle - Runyan is a lock, battle between JBB/Hudson/Ulizio/Stueber at other OT. All five guys are still rotating between RT and LT.
