Albuquerque Journal article on Zach Gentry's flip

Submitted by Mr. Flood on

The tug of war didn’t last long. It’s Michigan for Zach Gentry.

The lure of Jim Harbaugh and the Wolverines flipped Gentry, as Eldorado High School’s senior quarterback — suddenly thrust in the middle of a heated recruiting battle between two of America’s most storied college football programs, Michigan and Texas — on Saturday night gave the new Wolverines coach a commitment to play for the maize and blue.

We haven't had it in forever...since, what, Henne beat out an injured Gutierrez and Clayton Richard?

I may be mixed up. But minus Forcier/Robinson in which Forcier disqualified his own self, we haven't had true competition at that position since Henne's true freshman year.

That was going on 11 years ago.

Morris, Speight, Malzone, Gentry...all very talented guys. Lace em up and let's see who's best.

I'm looking forward to this. And looking forward to this over the next couple of years.

But minus Forcier/Robinson in which Forcier disqualified his own self ...

I still shake my head at the shame of how that unfolded.

We know Robinson was a tough-as-nails competitor.  Can you imagine if Forcier had his head screwed on straight and the two of them pushed each other to get better and better?  It could have been something really special.

Just wonder what Malzone is thinking about all the clamor for Gentry and him being "....Jim Harbaugh’s first quarterback recruit at Michigan."  Wish them both well and hopefully it works well for the Team!

Malzone is an early enrollee.  He may not even redshirt, while Gentry almost certainly will.  It is conveivable that he and Gentry would not even be in the same QB "class".  I don't think he's any more worried about Gentry than he would be about Speight or a 2016 recruit.

Somewhere along the line if you want to be the starter at Michigan, you'll have to step up and prove it anyway.

If Malzone is a true competitor, then he is thinking Gentry will bring out the best in him.

Didn't Speight tweet something to that effect -- that Michigan was loading up and he (Speight) was eager to strap up and do battle?

It's going to be an interesting spring and fall camp.  Can't wait to see how it all unfolds.

Here is the silver lining to the gut punch we all took on January 12th:  I can't help but think that Ohio State winning the National Championship helps us with these kind of recruits . . . a New Mexico kid that had his eyes on Texas, but now winds up at Michigan.

He has no natural affinity for Michigan and the Big Ten.  It has to help that Big Ten East is now an interesting, and dare I say, cool place to be.  We don't have to spend the recruiting cycle apologizing for our conference and explaining why in the world a kid from the Southwest would want to come here.

But why Michigan? Because of our coach? I get it.

But why not OSU? The seemingly logjam at OSU? Even if B. Miller transfers? Or MSU? Who is the air apparent at QB?

I'm just playing devils advocate. I get that Michigan has pull in a lot of ways that other schools cannot possess. But 5-7 says a lot.

I'm just saying that just because the B1G won the NC doesn't mean that every recruit needs to comes here.

OSU is clearly superior...and honestly, if you don't take academics into account, MSU is better on the football field too.

The SEC is more than solid also. So is the Big 12...

Does Harbaugh have THAT much pull? God, I hope so. And it seems that way...but objectively, Michigan is not that high on my list.

I bleed maize and blue...but if I had a top 5 recruit as a son, where do you advise him to go? ALA, OSU, FSU, etc?

Honest question...what do you think? Where would you 'push' for?

I agree that OSU's national champ will probably help. After watching the SEC West flail in bowl season, it's not a stretch for recruits to imagine the Big Ten East becoming the epicenter of college football in the next few years with Urbs vs. Harbaugh, plus MSU, plus improving Penn State.

In Gentry's case, he's got to be impressed with the Harbaugh-Luck connection.

I've looked at this kid gentrys tapes on YouTube, from qb camps to actual high school film and I'm not sold on him to be honest. I like malzones skill set better, the only thing gentry has is his size and his arm strength (which I did not think was above and beyond either). We are in some hot water with our current qbs, denard Robinson and Gardner masked a lot of our inabilities even tho both as qbs made you want to pull your hair out at times, mostly Gardner. Hopefully harbaugh can coach these guys up cause we really need it, I don't know what to think of Shane Morris after that Minnesota start... Russell Bellomy is like 4/26 passing in his career.... And Speight is yet to take a snap yet... We have such a question mark at he most important position and that's scary. We as fans have to realize that and temper our expectations cause it's easy to get on the harbaugh train. Quarterback will be a work in progress for us all year, expect guys to be benched and pretty much a revolving door at the qb position this coming year. I hope I'm wrong tho Go Blue

Morris has showed nothing even close to being the real deal. Not saying he won't be, but he has a LONG way to go before anyone would consider him the real deal. I watched Morris many times in high school, he has major accuracy problems, and it hasn't changed in college yet. If we do find success at QB next year I agree, it has to be Morris, but I'm not as sure as you are that he's the guy.

Keep in mind, for a long time Michigan has had great WRs who helped make the QBs look good. They really took a step backward last year, I think, after losing Gallon. Teams could focus on Funchess knowing there was no one else who could hurt them.

Darboh came around a little bit, but Harbaugh badly needs a couple of dangerous WRs to add to this QB group. Hopefully, Brian Cole can help right away.

If you are serious about playing QB at the next level and Harbaugh comes calling, you answer, listen, and then commit
