Alabama Football Textbook Scandal

Submitted by MichiganStudent on
I was just watching College Football Live and they were talking about Alabama's textbook scandal where players were giving their textbooks to friends and family. Reportedly, over 200 players are involved over 4 years. The big issue with this is that Alabama was on probation during the early years of this scandal and could end up losing at least a few scholarships. If the NCAA comes down hard as they did with FSU then we could see more strict sanctions placed upon the Alabama athletic department and football program. This is schadenfreude in its purest for me if Alabama gets some major sanctions placed upon them. I never had any feelings, positive or negative, towards Alabama in the past, but with the hiring of Saban I have started to hate them. Discuss...

This is a stupid situation that Alabama shouldn't have to deal with. We're talking about sharing textbooks. I mean, really? I hate Alabama, but the sanctions should be around how they recruit/cut players, not some shitty thing like the textbooks.

I think he'll still try to sign a class of 36. [Edit: scratch that. I forgot about the new SEC rule on recruiting.]

What is an Alabama athlete going to do with a textbook anyway? I think it was stupid to give them any in the first place.

forfeiture of games in 2007, 3 more years probation but no loss in scholarships edit: here's one article http://alabama.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=954161 "The NCAA's additional penalties involving Alabama's textbook distribution case will include three more years of probation and forfeiture of victories in any sport in which an ineligible athlete participated, but will not include scholarship losses for the football program, a source has told BamaOnLine.com." "According to the source, forfeits in football will include, but won't be limited to, six vacated victories from the 2007 season. Five UA players were suspended in mid-season when news of the textbook violations first broke. Under the NCAA's ruling, the lone victory that will stand for that season will be UA's Independence Bowl win over Colorado, UA's only win that season that came after the NCAA had reinstated the players, the source said. That would leave UA with an official mark of 1-12 for that year, although UA did win the Tennessee game without the players allegedly involved"

Thanks for the post. They guys on college football live were saying that Alabama football would at a minimum lose a few scholarships. I guess they were wrong. Oh well.
